Gold Replies to Claim on $12M Poker Prize

By PokerPages

The publicist for Jamie Gold, the 2006 World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion, issued a statement over the weekend in response to the lawsuit filed by Bruce Crispin Leyser claiming half the $12 Million WSOP winnings.

In the lawsuit, Leyser claims he has voicemail messages and other evidence as late as the morning of the main event final table that Gold confirmed a 50-50 deal in return for Leyser recruiting celebrities to endorse Bodog, who sponsored Gold's WSOP seat. The complaint claims that Leyser did recruit celebrities, upholding his side of the deal. So the suit is seeking half of the $12 Million that Gold won in order to honor their agreement. The statement hinted that Gold was prepared to negotiate the issue instead of going to court. The statement said "Jamie Gold is disappointed that the plaintiff, a person he has only known since July of this year, has elected to file litigation rather than continue the parties' discussions in an effort to find a resolution to this matter." The statement continues saying, "Mr. Gold believes strongly in the American judicial system and believes that it is better to present his case there than to try the matter before the court of public opinion.

The statement concludes by saying that Jamie Gold "is pleased to have had the opportunity to participate and win the World Series of Poker and is pleased with the quality of the tournament, his outstanding opponents, and Harrah's, the event organizer. Mr. Gold further appreciates the support of his fans and sponsor, Bodog.net, and hopes that this unfortunate litigation will not detract from the outstanding efforts of the entire field of participants in the World Series of Poker."

A restraining order related to the lawsuit prevents Harrah's from paying Gold his prize pending the first hearing of this lawsuit, which will be September 1st. So the $12 million dollars sits uncollected in the cashier's cage at the Rio, and could even be there a while longer.
