London Clubs Face Legal Action

In London, there are about 26 poker clubs which might be in violation of British gambling law as a result of a Crown Court jury decision (R. v. Derek Kelly (Gutshot), T20060579) on January 16, 2007.

Derek Kelly was prosecuted under the Gaming Act of 1968 which had barely mentioned card games. Specifically, Derek Kelly was accused of a violation of Sect. 3(c) (no charge for taking part in gaming), Sect. 4 (no levy on stakes or winnings), and Sect. 8 (all participating in the organization and management have committed an offense).

When a Freeroll Ain't

I took my seat alongside 49 others, vying for a piece of the stated $6,000 prize pool. This was a freeroll.

After a couple of hands, the dealer announced, "Rebuy at any time, but the add-on is only at the completion of the third level." I laughed out loud and threw the mischievous dealer a wink, saying something along the lines of, "Rebuy! Ha ha! Good one!"

The dealer kept a straight face and replied, "No, really. The rebuy is $50 for 1,500 chips and the add-on is $50 for 2,000 chips."
