As most of you probably know by now, I have left Card Player magazine for many personal reasons -- one is that they didn't want me to write for Poker Pages and I happen to think that this is an important site and not a conflict of interest. Never fear, Chip Chatter is alive and well and will be introduced in the upcoming issue of Poker Digest. Now back to the tournament trail and Tournament Chatter: I just returned from my second trip to Costa Rica and was delighted with the outcome of the Celebrity Poker Challenge. Casino Europa hosted five days of poker tournaments, four of which were no-limit hold'em and one Omaha High-Low event. All of the tournaments, with the exception of Omaha, were $10 buy-in events with multiple $10 rebuys. The prize pools were all $10,000 guaranteed except Omaha which guarantee $6000. Interestingly, all tournament hosts placed in the money and Linda Johnson even won her own event along with winning best-all-around, which included a Card Player Cruises, Cruise for two. The other first place winners were, Jan Fisher, Ronnie Alvarez, Eli Bajayo, and Gustavo Echeberri. To say that poker in Costa Rica is unusual and laid-back is an understatement. One night, a baby python made an appearance on the arm of a poker player. The player laughed at the look of horror on many faces and introduced his pet, "Boa," then put him back in his pocket. Poker Strategy. That's what it's all about, and if one aspires to become a consistently winning player, learning all about which strategic and tactical ploys can be applied under varying circumstances is a never-ending quest. After all, if you're standing still, you're probably going backwards ¾ or at least you are relative to your opponents.

European Poker Explosion! As the Poker Million approaches there seems to be more interest coming from the Americans. Just Last week Phil Hellmuth jr. conquered the Europeans in Austria at the PokerEM. Are the Americans starting to look at the European circuit as "easy pickings"? I guess not, but they may well do so if one of them triumphs on the Isle of Man next month. Ladbrokes have now guaranteed there will be prize money for the top 10% of players. The payment structure has not yet been confirmed but this is also good news for the players. Within the last 2 weeks there has been some great action in Europe. The 2nd Moscow International Tournament has now finished with Jac Arama (England) taking down 2 events including the main event. Gary Bush (England) was the best all around player winning 2 events and placing 2nd in another. Australia won the freeroll team event. In Dublin the main event attracted a $60,000 prize pool that was won by P.Crowe. The Rainbow Masters in Birmingham is off to a good start with tournaments being sold out with plenty of re-buys creating good prize pools for relatively low buy ins. This European section will be expanding in the next issue of the PokerPages Newsletter, we will welcome Mark Strahan, owner of Poker in the UK as a regular contributor. He will be keeping us up to date with the current news and views from the UK. We are currently looking for European Correspondents to contribute to PokerPages and this section of the newsletter on a regular basis. If you are interested please e-mail me and we can discuss it. Until next time, .............Be Lucky Mark Napolitano

. Sunday the 7th of October a team of Aussies loaded themselves aboard a plane here in Melbourne - bound for Moscow. Their final destination was the Hotel Leningradskaya. The reason for going - well ultimately a poker tournament ( I'm guessing you already figured that out). For anyone who attended the recent Orleans Open and associated TOC in Las Vegas you might have seen the brochures for the 2nd Moscow International Poker Tournament. How did all these Aussies and the several New Zealanders who flew from New Zealand to Korea to catch the final leg of a long long flight all decide to go to Moscow? Checking the brochure reveals all. The three people pictured inviting players to the Tournament are Jeff Lisandro, Marsha Waggoner and Mel Judah. In some way all three are Australian through and through. All have lived for some time in Australia - Jeff and Marsha expatriate now, living in other adopted countries. Jeff actually returned to Melbourne earlier this year to show how high limit poker should be played. He captured the first prize in the $5000 Pot Limit Omaha event in January. During the recent Australasian Championships in August he came to play again this time also providing prizes mostly as trips for two to the above Moscow Tournament. I have been keeping up with the state of play via our own aussie portal www.pokernetwork.com - a link can be found at pokerpages see "Poker downunder" and includes some great pictures as well as live Tournament reports.
