New Software for Tournaments and Single Tables Satellites and a New Format for PokerDollars
By Tina Napolitano

We will be creating Heads Up matches in the near future. Check for more details coming soon.

As you may or may not know, we have closed the tournament area on the old software. You will only be able to play 24/7 side action on the old software. To download our new software and participate in the Fun Play tournaments and Single Table satellites, click here. We have now added Limit Hold'em Single table tournaments as well as Limit Omaha Hi/Lo.

We are still awarding Poker Dollars, but this time it is a slightly different system. You play in the Fun Play area and your play in the tournaments is calculated and included in a ranking system (20 games per month).

The top 3 players on the ranking system at the end of the month win, 3 months, 2 months, and 1 month respectively in our www.pokerschoolonline.com

If you are already a PokerSchool member, then you can also participate in the Fun Play tournaments. If you win then, the time will be added onto your existing membership.

Tournament Chatter By Debbie Burkhead

Debbie Burkhead

We finished out the 2001 tournament year in Reno with a tournament at the Reno Hilton and ironically we begin 2002 right back at the Reno Hilton with the World Poker Challenge. The WPC begins on January 4 with a full day of satellites. Actual tournament play begins the following day with a $300 limit hold'em event. The WPC runs through January 26. The buy-ins range from $300 to a price tag of $5,000 to enter the championship event, each event is a two-day event with the exception of the championship event that will run three days, the Tex's TEARS structure will be used, and yes, the $25 room rate will be available.

Following the opening of the World Poker Challenge is the start of the World Poker Open at the Horseshoe in Tunica. For those of you traveling to Tunica the dates are January 5-26. The WPO begins with $500 buy-in and climb to the $10,000 championship event. The WPO awards gold bracelets to the winner of each event. All events with the exception of the championship event will be two days and the championship event will run 4 days. The Horseshoe/Goldstrike is offering a $29 room rate.

With two major tournaments running three weeks long it doesn't leave much left for anything else. I'm sure whichever tournament arena you decide to attend will prove to be interesting. Only time will time.

Until next time...

Tunica for the WPO in January
Mark is now in Tunica and has met with many of the players from our school, or ones that visit PokerPages. He will be there for the next 3 weeks so please go up and say hi to him and introduce yourself. It is so nice to finally put a face to that user name. See the Tunica video footage.

Again, PokerPages will be doing the full media coverage from Tunica, with daily radio and pre-recorded videos of the final tables, daily written reports by top poker writer Nolan Dalla, photos and live audio broadcast from the final table of the Main Event -- the one with the Million dollars guaranteed.

Mark Rathbun 330 No-Limit Holdem Event
Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City New Jersey

By Mark Rathbun

November 28, 2001. After two days of non success in the first two events I'm just looking to make a good showing in event number 3. I start my day with breakfast at Resorts Casino, I had a comped room over there and the place is spotless, even the chips look hand washed. I order the eggs benedict and some coffee. The waitstaff was friendly and my stomach was satisfied. Good start already.

I then stroll outside on the Boardwalk over to the Taj which became my morning ritual. Another beautiful day for late November, kids are still surfing! I proceed to the Poker Room and go right to the cage to pony up for my entry. The event starts promptly at 1100am. I sit down at one of the far tables by the Race Book.

A couple of familiar faces at my table, two young pros from California. A seasoned looking player from either NJ or Ny in the 10 hole. There was also a young gentleman in the 7 seat with a Philly FireFighter cap on, God bless him. Early on I catch my first break of the day.

I make a standard raise in early position, (Ace, King unsuited). Everyone folds around to the small blind who raises all in for $500.00. I ponder for a few moments and call. He shows KK. I sigh, and flip over my AK. Flop comes no help, but turn and river come Ace, Ace. My first double up.

Nolan Dalla Binion's Horseshoe Turns "50"
By Nolan Dalla
(All Rights Reserved)

A milestone passed last month. It came and quickly vanished without much notice or celebration. In fact, most gamblers were oblivious to the occasion. Binion's Horseshoe, one the world's most durable gambling institutions, turned "50."

In an era when corporate takeovers rumble throughout the industry, when structures built only a generation ago are imploded with great fanfare only to make way for more lavish monuments to excess, the Horseshoe hasn't changed very much. Since the time when Las Vegas was still a sleepy desert backwater speckled with sawdust joints, the Horseshoe has been a bulwark against modernization. Today, it remains one of the city's few casinos that is still family-owned and operated.

But the Horseshoe is clearly showing the signs of its age. It's desperate for a facelift. It's like the clock stopped around 1973 and everyone inside -- from the string-tied dealers to the aging customer base -- is trapped in a time-warp. Yet, the informality and down-home feeling one gets inside is one of its most endearing qualities. The Horseshoe stands in juxtaposition to the Vegas Strip, with its dizzying maze of bright lights and unwavering anonymity. It's a throwback to a bygone era when Las Vegas was much more of a "gambling" town, and far less concerned with trying to be "a family destination."...

Three Poker Poems
By One-Eyed Jack

The Poker Poet
The best laid plans of mice and men
Fall short of the glory in their zeal to win
NO RESPECT
NO GLORY
NO SMILE TO HOLD
NEVER TO BE REVERD
NEVER TO BE ALONE
Oh GOD I hate to play poker in the twilightzone

All In All In My Cry Goes Out
All In All In my cry goes out
Realizing immediately that it's a mistake
My opponents have smirks all over their face
There is this feeling of regret in my pit
Mistakes are made I cannot change
I can only smile and hope for the best
Pray that things will go well
Reaching out to the poker god's smile
At last the time has come to hold my breath
Things go well as the poker gods bless
If nothing else I'll be here awhile
Waiting for the mistakes to catch up in time
I leave the table, now off to the soup line.

Professor Poker By John Vorhaus

John Vorhaus

Dear Professor Poker,

I got upset when I flaked out of a big pot a few days ago and could have won it. Here's what happened...

I was dealt two queens in the hole. (3-6 hold 'em) The betting was capped before the flop (first time in the past five hours it happened.) The flop comes and it turns out to be a 6, 8, T. Six players are in. By the time the betting comes to me, I owe nine bucks and figure someone has got to have a straight, or a pair of K's or A's in the hole, so I fold. The betting continues on the turn when a 5 shows (no possible flush.) Lastly, on the river, a deuce pops up. Players continue to bet like crazy.

Well, it turned out that the guy raising the most had a pair of J's in the hole, and he won. I ended up losing the chance to make over 150 bucks that hand. The point is, how do I know when my big pair in the hole is beat, and when I should punish the raisers with raises of my own? Any tips would be much appreciated!

Sebastian the Great

Dear Sebastian,

Okay, the betting was capped before the flop and this, according to you, was highly unusual. If I were you I'd have been worried about A's and K's too, but I would not have been too worried about 9-7, the hand that someone would have had to hold in order to hit the straight on the flop. So your fears of a flopped straight where likely unfounded, but with so many (usually tight) players liking the flop enough to stay involved, I'd probably have pitched my queens just like you did.

European Poker By Tina Napolitano

Tina and Mark Napolitano

European Poker - I am sorry but I made a mistake in my last newsletter with the results of the European Poker Awards. Please find below the correct results:

  • Player of the Year - Marcel Luske
  • Rookie of the Year - Alex Kravchenko
  • Casino Staff Person of the Year -
    Thomas Kremser
  • Best Individual Tournament Performance of the Year - Simon "Aces" Trumper
  • Poker Personality of the Year - Pacal Perrault
On the tournament front things are a little quiet as many of the players have made their way to one of 3 overseas events taking place at this time. They have braved the seas and gone to Australia, where Barney and Ross Boatman have already had their name on the result board...And then there is a split of players, and it will be interesting to see which ones opt for Reno and which ones for Tunica.

For those of you choosing to stay home, there will be the Poker Winter Challenge in Seefeld, Austria from 17th -19th of January, and then nothing until February when the Euro Final of Poker are on at the Aviation Club in Paris. This year they are also doing the heads up structure, which should prove to be very popular with the players.

Poker Down Under By David Parlor
David Parlor

With the New Year brings the Southern Hemisphere's largest poker Tournament, The Australasian Championship. Crown Casino has moved the event, traditionally held in August to January and has already tempted some well-known players from the North to enjoy some Poker and sunshine. That's right it is summer down here and after seeing some of the recent snow storms in the UK it looks like a nice option to escape for awhile.

There have been many predictions of who will win the main event with around 70 players expected to enter. While The Hendon Mob fancy their chances and continue to talk it up, I don't believe that they will find the going all that easy. Many of the locals have developed into decent tournament players and are planning to slow down The Mob's Ashes campaign. My suggestion to The Mob is not to expect any early declarations in this Ashes event.

While The Australasian Championship may have the spotlight at the moment, it is not too early to start planning for The National Poker Championship to be held in Canberra from the 16th of February. A prize pool of around $200,000 is expected with around 150 entrants during the week. For an expression of interest form contact Casino Canberra directly. Special accommodation packages have been arranged with the Crowne Plaza Canberra @ $146 room per night. Book direct with the Crowne Plaza on 02 6247 8999 and ask for the Casino package rate.
