Poker in America By Tina Napolitano

As promised in the previous newsletter we now have the dates for the WPO in January 2003. Also I have to apologize for the Newsletter being 2 days late, due to the July 4th holiday time. We needed to have some time to catch up with all the results, photos, reports and schedules so thought it better to send out the newsletter on the 9th. The next newsletter will go out as usual on the 21st.

Despite the month of June and July being dominated by the World Cup, there was still great attendance for the poker events. Maybe some of you were lucky enough to be able to sit at the poker table and watch the TV at the same time. Great performance by all the teams, and really a shame that only one can win, and that we have to wait another 4 years for such a wonderful sporting competition to come around again.

When we left the last newsletter, it was in the middle of the Battle of the Bay, so let's bring you up to date with what happened at the end of that popular event. On June 22nd, Tin Nguyen took first place and for a $300 buy in on the Limit Hold'em championship, he took home the prize of $18,500. Quite a tough competition with 167 runners. The final event at Lucky Chances, which was a No Limit Hold'em $500 buy-in with a $50,000 guaranteed, produced a winner from San Francisco. Lap Ley took home $31,000 for his wonderful performance to beat 179 entrants.

The 2nd of the Bellagio events was won by Peter Costa from Leicestershire, England. This player is currently on fire, with not only his win in this event with $112,000 and a place in the WPT final, but his win at The Commerce last month and also read below in the UK section to see what he achieved last week. Way to go Peter!!!!!!!

PokerPages as you know likes to cover as many events as possible, and we see the importance of reporting on the local player that wins a $50 tournament as well as the players that pay the $10,000 entrance with a chance to win one of the Million + prizes on offer these days. It is the local player that with practice and experience under his or her belt, will eventually see their name in lights. They will come to the forefront of the industry and start to win some of those big events.

So if you need a little encouragement you can always join www.PokerSchoolOnline.com where we are turning novices into winning players on a regular basis. Also, if your local cardroom is having an event that you want on the PokerPages map, then email me and I will be glad to give it coverage.

The recent Northwest Poker Challenge at Spirit Mountain Casino in Oregon, saw 5 days of events with a total guaranteed prize pool of $90,000. David Heesch from Bend, OR won Event #1 along with $3,370. Steve Rosling took home $7,390 for his 1st place finish in the 2nd event, a Terminator Limit Hold'em with a $25 bounty added. Tom Schmit from Lake Oswego was the proud winner of Event #3 and $4,590. Event #4 was a partners event and Aurelia and Carl Wong from Portland shared the prize of $3,480. The final event with the $25,000 guaranteed was won by Karel Hejcman from Vancouver, BC. The winning prize was $9,780, and there were 110 entrants.

In Oceanside, California there was action at The Oceans Eleven Casino with their 5 day schedule of tournaments. Guaranteed money on offer on 4 days and one day being a golf and poker combination. The results have only just come in so there is not enough time to mention the players by name this time around, but you can click here to find out the information.

The action was really hot at the Casino San Pablo for their annual San Francisco Open. A poker players dream, really, to just go up and down the coast of California for the months of June and July to participate in these 4 big events: Lucky Chances, Oceans Eleven, Bicycle Casino and the Casino San Pablo. The best all-round players were Marie Gabert, Lam Ha Hoang, Ferdinand Sanchez and Hristos Kournoutas.

Meanwhile the action at The Bike was very hot with the recent Stars and Stripes tournaments and Seyed Mazarel not only took home $11,135 but also a beautiful Harley Sportster. The other $20,000 guarantee event was won by Mark Brining and he got $13,070 and the $25,000 guarantee was won by Shmuel Dassa who took home $15,265 and beat 120 other players.

I was very sad to learn that after the #15 issue, Poker Digest will no longer be arriving in the mail every 2 weeks. I was very impressed with the way that the magazine had changed over the past year, as well as the great team of writers that they had on board. But don't worry as many of them have now spoken to us at PokerPages and you will see some of the familiar faces appearing here soon. We are delighted that Andy Glazer has joined the team at PokerPages and has become a teacher in PokerSchool.

June and Phil Field were the visionaries that originally started the first poker magazine and Poker Digest was their second. I truly hope that this will mean that both June and Phil will have some quality leisure time and will not have to put in so many hours. Happy cruising June and Phil.

Well, I was nearly ready to sign off and I realized that I had not mentioned The Orleans Open, and considering that it is Mark's Tournament Pick this month, I would have gotten into considerable trouble. I am still not quite used to the time change and working in Europe, as I am now working 8 hours and then starting again for another 8 hours when the Austin office opens. Go figure that one out. This move was meant to give me more spare time and now I have less. Anyway, back to The Orleans Open, as we all know the first event usually draws in one of the largest attendance in the annual poker calendar.

There were 940 entrants to the $125 Limit Hold'em, and Van Pham took home the $32,825 prize for 1st place. Sunday the 7th saw Men "The Master" Nguyen win the Omaha Hi/Lo and beat 559 players, 560 including him, to get the $19,560 prize.

Now before I do sign off, I must let you know that The Orleans will be running until July 21st, with plenty of good action to plug into. The Crazy 8 at The Hollywood Park started on July 8th and runs until July 11th, and the monthly Challenge Tournament is at the Reno Hilton from the 12th - 14th. Then another Crazy 8 at The Hollywood Park from 15th - 18th followed by The Hustler's first big Tournament - The Grand Slam from July 19th - 31st.

Wherever you may choose to play, be lucky, have fun and be nice to the other players on the table.

Take Care

Poker in Europe By Tina Napolitano

Well our move to this side of the water went relatively well, but still after 2 weeks we are not in our house and we are working remotely from our laptops waiting for the technical bits and pieces to be completed in our office. It is truly a different way of life in Spain, from what we have been used to in the USA. By the time the next newsletter goes out we will be truly in our new office and hopefully in our house.

We are going to be concentrating more on the European Poker market and I have some great people that will be joining our team in the next month to make this possible. If there are any European players out there that would like to have profiles on PokerPages, don't be shy, submit them to us and we would be delighted to give you front page coverage.

June in the Poker World in Europe was truly a Russian affair. Not only are the Russian players making a name for themselves in the other European countries by winning tournaments, but they now have a great tournament schedule to choose from at home.

The Taleon Masters took place in June and the big $700 buy in No Limit Hold'em event was won by Aki Piizing from Finland with Alex Kuznetsov from Russia coming in 2nd. The first prize was $13,500 and there were 36 entrants.

Then the White Nights tournament was presented by Casino Conti from June 24th - June 30th. The main event which was a 600 Euro No Limit Texas Hold'em was won by Sokolov Sergey from Russia and he took home 18,054 Euros. Glad to see Russia finally on the map as far as poker goes and now we have to make it spread to those other countries that as yet do not have out in the open poker events, Spain being one of them.

I often receive emails from players all over the world asking if we can do something to get poker locally to them. We will be delighted to help and join some of you together to make this happen for your country in the future. Meanwhile you can all meet up online in our PokerPages Cardroom, which is free. You can meet players from the world over and also have h a chance to win membership into PokerSchool, where there are up to $100,000 worth of sponsorships to major worldwide events to be awarded.

The Poker Masters was held in Seefeld and was won by Kemmil Niels. This was a 2 day Pot Limit Omaha event...The Summer Tournament took place at The Aviation club in Paris and Sami Torbey from France won the 1st tournament with 50,000 Guarantee and Arshad Kouroush won the 2nd one, however the main event was a 3,000 Euro buy-in Limit Hold'em 2 day event with 150,000 guaranteed and this was won by Ron Rose from the USA.

The best all-round player was Yves Aknin and Yves won a poker cruise for 2. The next tournament for all to follow is The Midnight Sun which started yesterday and goes until July 14th. It's held at Casino Ray in Helsinki. Then there is the Worthersea Trophy from Velden in Austria from July 15th until 21st.

Take Care in your travels and may I wish you the best of luck with your poker,

Poker in the UK and Ireland By Tina Napolitano

The Mini Hold'em tournament took place at The Grosvenor Casino in Ramsgate and unfortunately we still do not have any of the results despite several requests to the casino...

The European Poker Championships took place at The Vic on the Edgware Road, and there was a great turnout of players.

The first event had 175 entries and 197 rebuys which took the prize pool to 74,400. The first place was won by Graham Pound and he took home 28,272. The 2 day Pot Limit Omaha game was won by Chris Bjorin from Sweden, and he took home 39,140. He beat 77 other players to achieve this 1st place finish. The Pot Limit 7-Card Stud Freezeout made Barney Boatman richer by 18,620 and gave him the first place finish. There were an amazing 102 runners for this event.

The 2 day No Limit Hold'em produced 159 entrants with 79 rebuys and this made up the prize pool of 119,000 which produced D Barnes as the lucky winner with 43,035 to take home. Marcel Luske from Holland won 14,972 for his 1st place finish in the Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo on the Thursday night. The final event which was the European No Limit Hold'em Championship, put a huge smile on T Shambrook's face, going home with 120,000 pounds in his pocket.

Peter Costa
Peter Costa

Peter Costa placed 2nd and got 62,700. You will remember I mentioned him before in the USA section of this newsletter. What a couple of months you have had Peter with your poker playing, it was very much overdue and we are delighted for you. Keep up the good work.

The action at The Vic just keeps on getting better. It is a shame that Argos or Woolworths next door don't move out of the top floor. Then you could be up for expansion for the poker room, as I am sure you would fill every seat. Well done to the team at The Vic, Great event and great reports about it.

Things will be a little quiet in London now with the end of Wimbledon, the World Cup and now the European Poker Championship, but don't worry -- there is the Scottish Masters in August and the Grosvenor UK Open from Luton also in August.

Until next time, shuffle up and deal some of those winning hands.

All the talk amongst the Poker Staff at Crown is of the Casino Employee Tournament in Canberra. With a little bit of tournament experience following the very popular New Zealand Championships in April this year, many of the Crown staff expect to do well in this one day only event. I only hope that they can do better than a final table finish and bring the title home to Melbourne.

Sydney Casino will also be well represented with many staff already booking seats to ensure that they do not miss out. Many of these players have traveled to Melbourne to play and I am sure will also be represented on the final table. To put it in the words of one of their own, "Sydney has a Casino full of dealers that may have watched Rounders a couple of times". I hope they put that to good use and look forward to meeting them across the felt.

The Victorian Poker Championships will commence on August 17 and will include satellites for the Aussie Millions in 2003. Other tournaments will range from $330 to $1100 for the No Limit Holdem Main Event. After the experience that the Sydney Casino staff will gain in Canberra I hope to see them well represented at Crown in August and wish them all the best of luck.

For anyone who is considering booking accommodation for tournaments in Australia and don't mind short notice, I recommend www.wotif.com. I have used this site on many occasions and have found it of great value when traveling. A full range of accommodation is available from budget to five star.
