PokerPages/PokerSchool Expansion

Mark, Tina and the team at PokerPages/PokerSchool would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused to the readers, members and players during our recent upgrading and re location of our new servers. As per usual, what you hope will be a relatively smooth transition, was dogged by hiccups. This left not only some of our customers frustrated and unable to access information, results and play in the cardroom smoothly, but had the PokerPages team working around the clock all weekend to solve some of these issues. We just want to say that we have nearly fixed all of these initial teething problems and now will be bringing you a much more reliable and quicker service all around.

He has even created a new poker game for tournaments, called Potnopine Hold'em, which some consider be the best and most exciting game there is.

Rolf is committed to making tournament poker a sport rather than a gambling event, and endeavors to get for poker the sponsorship and exposure that it deserves.

The Orleans Open has reached a conclusion after 16 days of events, bringing us a total of 34 tournaments. The first event did not overtake the record numbers of the past year, but still a great turnout with 940 entrants. Every night at 7pm there was a 2nd chance event, which also saw good attendance numbers and good prize money.

The Hustler has its first major tournament, The Grand Slam of Poker, which started on July 19th with Larry Flint Celebrity Roast and the first poker tournament was held on Saturday 20th at 3.00pm, which was a Limit Hold'em $200 + $25 with $10,000 Guaranteed. This attracted 355 entrants and there were 307 rebuys, giving a total prize pool of $173,000. The lucky winner was Kenna James and he took home a fantastic prize of $65,740.

The 2nd event was a No Limit Hold'em with a $300 buy-in and $50,000 guarantee. This event was won by Jamie Mena for a 1st place prize of $27,370.

The total amount of guaranteed money for these events is $480,000 and there are some other exciting prizes to be had also. Nice to see The Hustler finally have their name on the Poker calendar and hope that this event is back again every year. Great timing -- kids on holiday, Los Angeles theme parks and a wonderful poker event for Dad or Mom in the evenings.

The Bellagio continues it schedule of events and there are 2 being held in July. Mixed Games event on July 23rd - July 25th for a $3000 buy-in and also July 30th - August 1st the $2500 buy-in Limit Hold'em event.

The Annual BARGE event is being held at Binion's Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas. This is where some of the newsgroup RGP get to meet with other players that post here, and also take part in their favorite pastime of playing poker. This starts on July 30th and runs until August 3rd. They have combined an interesting set of tournaments along with a buffet at The Mirage. Results and hopefully photos will be shown in the August 7th Newsletter.

For those players that are in Canada, the Diamond Poker Classic starts on July 24th from Casino Regina in Saskatchewan. There are 3 $100 buy-in events and 1 $200 buy-in event.

The Legends of Poker starts on August 1st and runs nearly all of August until the 27th. The big buy-in event of this tournament will be held on Friday 30th August, and will require a $5000 buy-in. This will be the 2nd final table event that will be filmed by the WPT and be shown on television hopefully next year.

August 4th see the Start of the Seniors X World Championship of Poker at it new home, The Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas, and it will run until event #6 on the 9th of August. Please go and support Johnny Hale and his wonderful events, as this also benefits worthy charities too.

The Hollywood Park has introduced a new set of tournaments and these are called The Front Nine. They will be held on every Monday and Wednesday of each week between August 5th through to the 21st. They are $20 buy-in events with $10 entry fee, and there is a range of guarantees from $10,000, $7500 and $5000 with Multiple Rebuys. I am sure that these events will be a sell out, get there early to avoid disappointment, they all start at 7.15pm.

Well, plenty of action to keep you all busy, and would highly recommend the Hollywood Park Front Nine events if you are looking to take part in your first ever live tournament.

Wherever you may go and play, be safe and be lucky.

Take Care

Poker in Europe By Tina Napolitano

The Midnight Sun was held in Helsinki earlier this month, and it consisted of 7 events over 7 days. The first event was a Super Satellite and we did not get the results from that. Andrew Marstev from Russia won the No Limit Hold'em and the prize of 12,418 Euros, for a 100 Euro buy-in and 10 Euro entry fee. There were 106 entrants for this event.

Event #3 was the Pot Limit Omaha which needed 500 Euros to buy in and a 50 Euro entry fee. Johan Storakers from Sweden won this one and the top prize of 24,944 Euros. Timo Tukiainen from Finland beat the other 63 entrants to win 18,735 Euros in the Pot Limit 7-Stud, and The 2 day No Limit Hold'em with a buy-in of 2000 Euros was won by Ivo Donev along with 34,047 Euros. There were only 39 entrants for this big event.

The Short Handed Hold'em event was won by Lalit Khajuria and the first place prize of 22,262 Euros and the final event, the Pot Limit Soko (Scandinavian 5-Card Stud) was won by Jari Salonen from Finland along with 17,155 Euros. The best overall player was Jarkko Lindblad from Finland.

The Worthersea Trophy and the Casino Velden Masters was held from July 17th through to July 21st. I have very limited information on the winners and in some cases just a name, and I am not sure if it is their first or last name, but thought it very important to mention anyway. The 7 - Card Stud was won by Studer and the Pot Limit Omaha was won by Riedlinger for 15,900 Euros. The 7-Card Stud was won by Magee and the No Limit Hold'em was won by Farnood for 27,550 Euros. 7-Card Stud was won by Daniel Brio for 37,410.

Things go a little quiet in Europe for the remainder of the summer, that is, in the poker rooms anyway. As for where I am now living, the whole of Spain goes on their annual holiday in August, so for one month only it is sitting elbow to elbow on the beaches, and plenty of karaoke bars open all night...Mark will be pleased, especially as he won the karaoke competition held in Gibraltar and appeared on television. Not only do I have to put up with a poker celebrity in the house, I have to put up with a budding Julio Iglesias too. Although it is quite a way off, the next poker event in Europe is The Bodensee Poker Championship, brought to you from Casinos Austria. This runs from August 28th until September 1st.

Until next time, Adios Amigos

Poker in the UK and Ireland By Tina Napolitano

The Summer Breeze Poker Festival from The Rendezvous Casino in Brighton started on July 15th and finished today. So here are the results for most of the events. The first event was a Pot Limit Hold'em with a 30 pound buy in a 3 pound entry fee. This event was won by B.Cockrell along with 1,900 pounds. The 2nd event was a Pot Limit Omaha and was won by Michael Frisby along with 1,800, and this event attracted a total of 47 entrants. P.Palvo won the Pot Limit Hold'em and the prize of 3,240 for this 50 pounds buy-in event that attracted 63 entrants. N.Duggen beat 44 other players to win the 2,300 prize money of this 50 pound buy-in Pot Limit Stud. For the rest of the tournament results from Brighton, click here.

These type of tournaments, which are relatively low buy-ins, attract many of the newer poker players into the real world of live tournament play. We would like to make it clear for those of you in the UK that sometimes in the smaller of casino/cardrooms, they do not supply the dealers and it is up to the players to pass the deck around the table and deal themselves. This can sometimes come as a shock if you are not expecting it. You should not be put off by this as there will always be players ready to help you overcome your initial nerves when dealing for the first time. Mark says that once you have dealt 2 or 3 hands you will feel like you have been dealing all your life.

The Hold'em Double will be held at the Grosvenor Casino in Southampton on Monday July 29th and Tuesday 30th. The event starts at 3pm on Sunday and 7pm on the Monday. Please call the casino before you travel to take part in this event as I have entered it into the tournament section 3 times now on different dates and I just can't seem to pick the right date for this to take place, so please ring them as you may get more information than I can. Also, if it is on, can someone send me the results?

The month of August hots up the poker scene in the UK. We have the Scottish Masters from the Gala Riverboat in Glasgow on August 5th through to August 11th. The first event kicks off with a 25 pound Super Satellite for the main event. Then on August 12th, Carmel hits the poker scene with the Grosvenor UK Open which promises to be a very exciting and eventful tournament. I don't know if you can pre register, but if you can I would strongly advise you to do so, or camp outside to make sure your seat is secure.

Until next time, take care and be lucky

Poker Down Under By David Parlor

I recently returned to Melbourne after spending a few days in Canberra last week, enjoying the Inter-casino Poker Championship. Much to everyone's surprise there were 53 entrants and a prize pool exceeding $10,000. The majority of the casino staff that entered the event were from Crown in Melbourne or Star City in Sydney. However, a brave few made the 13-hour drive from Brisbane to represent Treasury Casino.

I wish I could say that my predictions had come true and that the majority of the players at the final table were from Crown. This however, was not the case. Star City staff made up 7 of the final ten and took out the top four places. How did I go? I finished 6th, just out of the money and will not bore you with the details of what terrible luck I had to go out at that point.

Congratulations to all the Sydney staff who were clearly the best on the day. I look forward to meeting you across the felt some time in the near future.

Looking forward now, the Victorian Poker Championships will commence on August 17 and a lot of interest has been shown from many interstate players. This week will include two satellite events for the Main Event in 2003 and are sure to prove as popular as they were in the recent tournaments held in May. A variety of other tournaments will be held with by-ins ranging from $330 to $1100 and I am sure will be supported by some great live action in the Crown Poker Room.

On the topic of live games. Crown Casino has introduced $2 3 Card Manila after many requests from players. As an introduction, this game will only be spread from Monday to Wednesday at present although this may change if demand exists.
