Tunica Trip Report
By 24karet

Last week, Maxer (Frank Herren) and I (Carla Herren) went to Tunica, MS. We have been playing on PokerPages for about 6 months and had not played a "live" game in almost 25 years. We got lots of good advice from PP players, the best being to start in a tourney to get our feet wet. We stayed at the Grand and they ran daily tourneys ranging from 3 to 6 tables. $5.00 buy-in, unlimited re-buys before the break, then one additional add-on.

First day, Maxer and I met at the final table and chopped the pot for 1st and 2nd. Our play on PP definitely kept us in the games. We could identify the rocks, loose players, and maniacs!!! I think we were over-confident the second day and did not finish in the money. Out of 6 tourneys, Maxer made it to the final table twice and I made it 3 times. Many times it looked grim but we both remembered "a chip and a chair" and used that last chip wisely. Although we certainly didn't win them all, we never went on tilt.

Half-way through the trip, we met Pokergoddess. She (of course) gave us some good pointers and tips. It was great to meet a real person from PokerSchool Online.

THANK YOU POKER PAGES!!!!!!!

Poker in America By Tina Napolitano
Layne Flack

The Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino continued through August and a bizarre thing happened in Event 9, the $300 Low Ball. Layne Flack received a 10 minute penalty when there were 3 players remaining after uttering an obscenity when he lost a hand. At that point he had about a third of the chips and when he returned he found that about half of them had been blinded off, with the eventual winner Mathew Ho getting most of them by raising nearly every hand. Layne ended up in third place ($4,070) with Mathew Ho winning $13,560 for the main prize. This is not the first time we have seen this penalty imposed, as the same happened to Scotty Nguyen during the final table of the TOC.

Phil Hellmuth If poker is to become a nationally recognized sport/pastime then everyone involved has to accept it needs to be cleaned up and bad language at the table is not acceptable. It is also not acceptable online, but many players hide behind their keypads and their user names to put strings of obscenities into the chat windows. On the note of abuse, Phil Hellmuth was banned for one night with his chips on the table, when in a fit of temper/frustration he left the table and kicked the glass door to open it. Actually, that side of the door was secure, so the bottom hinges came adrift. No major damage was done to the door or Phil, but he was declared out of the event and went home to drown his sorrows. Phil openly admitted he needs to grow up, but still thinks that the tournament director came down a little heavy on him.

David Levy won $32,000 in Event 10 $500 Limit Hold'em and Sam Sanusi an oil engineer for Exxon had a wire to wire victory in Event 11 $500 No Limit Holdem. The $500 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo (Event 12) turned out to be a marathon final table, taking nearly 5 hours to complete. Scotty Nguyen outlasted David Pham to take a first prize of $26,000 in a heads up match that took 26 hands to conclude and had reached the $10,000-$20,000 limit level. Well done Scotty, are you now in training for the Chicago marathon?

Daniel Negreanu won his 2nd and 3rd Legends tournaments by taking Event 13 $500 Omaha Hi/Lo ($22,600) and Event 18 $1,000 No Limit Hold'em ($44,800) which has lifted in to 2nd position in the all round table, 47 points behind David Pham. Way to go Daniel.

29 year old Aussie resident Toby Atroshenko won Event 14, $500 Pot Limit Hold'em, and $29,000 to spend on his "poker holiday". He usually gets his practice by playing in weekly pot limit home games and used this experience to defeat seasoned pros such as T.J. Cloutier and Randy Holland. Just think how many other events he could have won if he was a member of PokerSchool Online instead?

Robert Turner, the man who conceived Legends of Poker, won $18,400 in Event 15 $500 H.O.E. after refusing a deal from second place Andrew Maloof when Andrew held a 2-1 chip advantage. When the rolls were reversed, Maloof accepted the same deal that he had previously proposed from Robert Turner. Must have been a fair deal in Andrew's mind.

Event 16 $500 7-Card Stud went to Toto Leonides ($15,000) when he beat former world champ Huck Seed into second place by making trip 7's on the river when Huck already held trip 3's. Unknown player Si Tran nearly pulled off a shock win in the $1,000 Limit Hold'em (Event 17) but accepted a deal from Men 'The Master' Nguyen after being outplayed when heads up. Men took home $31,600.

Event 19 $1,000 7-Card Stud Hi Lo went to David Phan ($23,600) and Ex Hollywood Park bartender Henry Minasyan won Event 20 $500 Half 7-Card Stud Hi Lo Half Omaha Hi Lo. ($19,600). Should be good for a round of drinks!!!

Legends of Poker continues throughout August and despite these few hiccups, still remains one of the best run events on the Poker calendar. Legends reaches its conclusion on Sunday September 1st. You can read the results as they happen on PokerPages along with the wonderful reports from Max Shapiro.

Lucky Chances in Colma announced the start of its WPT (World Poker Tour) Sunday Qualifiers. The winner gets not only cash but an entry into the $300,000 World Poker Tour event that will be held during the Gold Rush in November. Full schedule for the Gold Rush is now online at PokerPages.com.

What's coming up - The Speedway of Poker is starting at Garden City Casino on the 24th and runs for 8 days, Oceans Eleven has the Dog Days of Summer on the 25th, along with Chinook Winds who present Run for the Wind III.

The Bellagio is hosting another 3 day event - 7 Card Stud which starts on August 27th, and this is at the same time that Binion's host their Hall of Fame, which runs from August 28th until September 14th. Then for you ladies only, The Commerce is hosting their infamous Ladies Poker Dream Weekend. So come on Ladies, it is your chance to shine and win some money without those men breathing down you necks at the poker tables. To finish off the month of August, The Sandia in Alburquerque is hosting the Labor Day Classic, and the Chip Island Inn are hosting their Labor Day Weekend tournament.

So wherever you may choose to play, have fun, be nice to everyone and be lucky

Kevin Pratt Kevin Pratt Joins PokerPages Team
PokerPages would like to introduce the new edition to our team - Kevin Pratt. A Poker Player and Webmaster, what a delight to have both those skills all rolled into one person. He has joined us in our European office and will be involved in many of the new projects that we are undertaking.

We are also extremely happy that he will be to contributing the Poker in the UK and Europe sections to the PokerPages newsletter. Find out just what is happening in those poker rooms throughout Europe as Kevin reports on the players (most of whom he knows personally) and their successes and experiences in the card rooms.

You will be able to see the daily results from all European events updated as it happens on PokerPages, and if any of the players wish to share stories for Kevin to include in the newsletter (even bad beats) then please email Kevin@PokerPages.com

Poker in Europe By Kevin Pratt

All the tournament action has so far been in the UK this month with the next European event being the Bodensee Poker Championship in Bregenz, Austria.

September sees the 7th European Poker Tournament for Casino Employees at the Gran Casino de Barcelona in Spain, which has been called the Mikohn Open. This is the tournament where the dealers, croupiers and managers get the chance to play poker in a real tournament. The event was first held in 1992 and attracted 52 casino employees and it has steadily grown with 572 entries from 50 casinos in 14 different countries last year.

The main festival in September is The Autumn Tournament from the Aviation Club in Paris which has your first chance to enter a Super Satellite for The World Poker Tour Event - The Euro Finals Of Poker - which will be held 12th-15th February 2002. The buy in for the Super Satellite is € 200 with the Main February Event having a € 10,000 buy in. The biggest event in the Autumn Tournament is the € 2000 No Limit Hold'em taking place Saturday 20th September, with the final starting at 5pm on Sunday 21st.

Later on in September comes the Austrian Classics at the Concord Card Casino which is always a popular venue amongst travelling European players. The full schedule can be found on the website.

Finally, the full schedule for the Poker EM is also available. This event is generally regarded as the premier 7-Card Stud Event in Europe and takes place between the 2nd and 5th October at Casinos Austria, Baden. PokerPages have added 7-Card Stud to their software and have joined up with Casinos Austria to host The 2nd Annual Online Poker EM Warm Up, so now you can sit at home and qualify prior to going to the live event itself. Last year the Warm Up was extremely successful but we are expecting it to be even more popular this year as the qualifying is done playing Stud rather than Hold'em. Watch out for some of the big European players at the tables as I'm sure they won't let the opportunity to enter the Poker EM for nothing go unnoticed.

Poker in the UK and Ireland By Kevin Pratt

The Scottish Masters in Dundee concluded on the 11th with the Main Event £100 Pot Limit Hold'em being won by G. Bekar picking up £11,000. J. Lee won the biggest buy in event of the week £10,000 for the £500 Pot Limit Hold'em with other winners being M.Mckinlay £7,400 for the £100 Pot Limit Omaha, H. Morograin £7,800 for the £100 No Limit Hold'em, and S. McQueston £5,800 for the £200 Pot Limit Hold'em.

As usual in Scotland the cash action proved frantic with an unusual situation happening in the £100 Dealers Choice game. Carlo Citrone, a player from Newcastle on his first visit to Dundee, sat down in the big blind and called a raise along with a few others. He flopped top set, checked and called a bet and a raise. The turn card gave him quads and everyone checked, and after the river card he checked and the original bettor bet again. Carlo wanted to raise all in but was only allowed to call, as his all in bet was an under-raise (no under-raising in Scotland). He therefore proudly displayed his winning quads and was told that he wasn't allowed to check the nuts on the river. Apparently there is a rule in Scotland that if you check the nuts and get paid the opponent is entitled to their money back from the pot. Needless to say, Carlo will not be rushing back to Scotland.

Following on from Dundee came the Grosvenor UK Open in Luton, a popular venue with most of the leading British players attending. The Main Event £1000 No Limit Holdem saw a top quality final table including Jan Sjavik, Simon 'Aces' Trumper, Jac Arama, and Garry Bush, but against all odds the winner turned out to be Keith Hawkins who took £37,000 home from right under the noses of the pros. Paul Testud from France had a successful week winning the £250 Pot Limit Hold'em (£12,876), the £200 Pot Limit Omaha (£11,500) and coming third in the £150 No Limit Hold'em (£5,800). Other winners on the week were Bruce Atkinson (£14,400) £100 Pot Limit Hold'em, Chandra Khajuria (£12,940) £100 7-Card Stud, and Mrs. Shirazi (£18,800) £150 No Limit Hold'em.

There's no let up in the U.K action as players head off for The Midlands Meldown at the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall, which starts on the 22nd and finishes on the 26th. The Main Event takes place on the 25th starting at 9.15 pm, but watch out if you have work as the final is held on Monday 26th at 3pm. As usual, we will keep you up to date on the website with the Walsall results as they happen.

Poker Down Under By David Parlor
David Parlor

The Victorian Poker Championship is in progress at present and has enjoyed some good support from both interstate and New Zealand players. Andrew Dimock from New Zealand showed some of the seasoned tournament players just what you can learn on the Internet by winning the first event. After the Aussies taking much of the silverware from the New Zealand Championship earlier this year, I could see that Andrew got a lot of satisfaction in taking some back across the Tasman.

Satellites for the Aussie Millions in January next year have proved to be very popular as the list of players is growing every week. A special poker rate of AUD$198 Sun to Thur & AUD$247.50 Fri & Sat (except for New Years Eve) has been negotiated at the World Renowned Crown Towers Hotel. To book this great offer, e-mail Tournament Director, Danny McDonagh at dannym@crowncasino.com.au.

Casino Canberra have just released details of their Poker Tournament beginning on the 1st October 2002. Entry Forms and full details of events can be obtained through the Casino Canberra website, or by contacting the casino on (02) 6257 7074. A discounted accommodation package with Crowne Plaza Hotel can also be booked through Guest Services at Casino Canberra.
