Poker In America
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
The Legends of Poker continued at the Bicycle Casino throughout August and culminated in the World Poker Tour Event $5000 No Limit Hold'em. This produced a field of 134 entries and a prize pool of $670,000 and was won by Chris Karagulleyen a player originally from Lebanon who picked up a cool $258,000. The six finalists (Hon Le, Stan Goldstein, Mark Seif, Can Hua and Kathy Liebert being the others), all qualified for the event through super satellites and played out the final surrounded by cameras and spotlights as this event is being nationally broadcast next year.
David Pham easily won the all round points championship and collected himself a Mercedes SUV so it proved a good months work for him. Since the last newsletter he won Event 22 7-Card Stud $19,800 and consolidated his position with other top finishes.
Other winners from legends were Event 21 Pot Limit Hi/Lo Charles Shoten ($12,000), Event 23 No Limit Hold'em Mark Seif ($53,400), Event 24 Limit Hold'em Men'The Master' Nguyen ($70,085), Event 25 Limit Hold'em Shootout David Levi ($18,000), Event 26 Omaha Hi/Lo Brian Nadel ($22,400), Event 27 Pot Limit Hold'em Surinder Sunar ($28,800), Event 28 Half Stud/Hold,em Philip Ivey ($19,350) and Event 29 H.O.S.E. Philip Ivey ($13,050)
The most exiting hand at Legends came in Event 23 where Mark Seif all but wrapped up the tournament when with 4 players left he found himself all in with Men 'The Master' Nguyen and Bill Gazes who were also all in. Gazes had queens, Seif had kings and Nguyen had aces. After a 7-5-2 flop a queen came on the turn and a king on the river to give a $152,000 pot to Seif and two thirds of the chips when heads up.
The Hall of Fame at Binions started quietly on the 28th August as it directly clashed with the main events at Legends. Event 1 Limit 7-Card Stud only had 60 entries with a prize pool of $28,000 and Randy Allen from Medina won a first prize of $11,280. Event 2 showed an improvement in numbers with 111 contesting the Limit Hold'em and was won by Mitch Mitchener $20,870. Event 3 No Limit Hold'em was won by David Whittemore $25,190 and Daniel Negreanu won another poorly attended Event 4 the $1,000 Limit Holdem picking up $24,820. Event 5 $1,000 Pot Limit Holdem had 48 entries and a prize pool of $45,120 and was won by Erik Seidel who took $20,300 for first place.
This event was notable for a hand when there were 3 players left. Peter Costa from England folded and Erik Seidel raised from the small blind and Ron Stanley called. On a flop of 2-2-4 Eric bet and Ron called with A-6. The turn card brought an Ace and Eric bet again and Ron called again. The river brought the case deuce and Eric went all in and was called by Ron's full house thinking that he was sharing the pot, but Erik Seidel remarkably showed 9-2 for quads. What a pre flop raise!! Event 6 $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha produced a star studded final table with nine of the ten finalist being household names. There were a disapointing 30 entries but with 50 rebuys Humberto Brenes ground out the win and pocketed $35,000. Event 7 Omaha Hi/Lo saw an improvement in numbers as 89 entered. Hoang Ta won $16,360 for his $500 buy in. Don't forget that if you want to know the results first then check the pokerpages website daily as we are the first to
put them up.
I hope that you all had a good holiday weekend and managed to find some time to spend with your family. Labor Day certainly proved fruitful for Tammy Brattisch at Oceans Eleven Casino as she won the $200 Limit Hold'em from a field of
237. The prize pool was $47,400 and she collected $16,120 to round off a great holiday.
Over at the Commerce The Ladies Poker Dream Weekend was well attended. Event 1 Limit Hold'em had 185 entries and was won by Cheryl Campbell from Burbank $1,330. Not bad seeing as the buy in was only $10. Sharon Norman from Riverside won $2,180 in the 7-Card Stud and Espy Enriquez from Oceanside won the Limit Hold'em $2,280
The Labor Day Classic main event at Sandia Casino was won by James Catton $3622 with Melvin Kuykendall winning the Omaha Hi/Lo $4,095, Christella Bacca Limit Hold'em $3974 and Ron Tanner 7-Card Stud $2703
The 2 Bellagio events Sept 3-5th and Sept 17-19th have been cancelled. Poker bosses cited the reluctance of the world's
top tournament players to travel to Las Vegas for single events lasting only a few days. Instead, Bellagio is hosting a 10-event, 11-day tournament that begins Dec.2, the Five Star Poker Classic. The championship no-limit hold'em event costs $3,100 to enter.

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
There has been one tournament in Europe since the last newsletter and that was in the pretty town of Bregenz in Austria. Daniel Studer from Switzerland won the Omaha Pot Limit and €13,400 along with the overall best player award.
Bertram Malang from Austria won €12,930 in the Limit 7-Card Stud, and Fetz from Austria won the main No Limit Hold'em event and €13,220.It was also noted by some players that Jac Arama went to Austria in the search for easy European ranking points but came back empty handed. Bad luck Jac but nice try.
The next main European event will be taking place at the Aviation Club de France in Paris between the 11th and 22nd of September and I am sure that many of the top Europeans will be attending. However there are 2 major tournaments in Las Vegas at the same time The Hall of Fame at Binions and the Four Queens Poker Classic and I think that some European pro players will be heading there instead. One player who is already there and collecting prize money is Peter Costa from Leicester. Peter or 'The Poet' as he is affectionately known has been making regular trips to the U.S and picking up some large amounts of money in the process since the start of the year. Check out the first few tournament results at the Hall of Fame to see that he is at it again.
I have been busy updating the database on PokerPages with regards to the casino directory and have added in some new casinos in Europe where poker is played. Poker in Scandanavia seems to be growing and i have added casinos in Sweden and Denmark along with details about a new venue in Estonia. If anyone's got any information about any events in Greenland then please e-mail me athough I will not be going to check out the local rules!! Speaking of local rules, although I haven't had this confirmed yet it appears that Poker in Barcelona is played in a very strange way. Apparently they deal to the right not the left and the action goes the same way as well. On top of that the button is supposed to act first as well. I will try to get some more details of this for the next newsletter.
I have recently added the full schedule for the European Nations Poker Challenge at the Taleon Club in St Peterburg in Russia which has some great supporting events namely the $2,000 No Limit Hold'em competition on the 2nd November. If you like high stakes cash action then Russia is certainly a place to go. The main cities of St Peterburg and Moscow are great places to visit and you will find that the main casinos will bend over backwards to help you with Visas and money transfers both in and out of the country. The Taleon Club is a high class establishment with beautiful architecture and is one best casinos to play poker in.
Don't forget that you can always find the results of all the European tournaments on PokerPages first. We have a comprehensive list of of schedules, and a full casino directory for the world. So when you are out playing then tell your friends where the best poker
information site is.
Finally don't forget to enter into the PokerEm Warm Up. It's your chance to qualify for the best 7-Card Stud tournament in Europe from the comfort of your own home. It is already proving to be a great success with about 200 people entering each night in a multi table 7-Card stud tournament which has been set up to closely follow the structure of the PokerEm itself. Please E-mail me if there are any other major European Events that you would like to have the chance to pre-qualify for.
Best of luck wherever you are playing over the next month.

Poker in the U.K. Kevin Pratt of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Its amazing how players suddenly seem to find a rich vein of form, they win one tournament and immediately follow it up with another one. This happened twice at the recent Midlands Meltdown Festival at Walsall with B. Mijran splitting the £200 Pot Limit Omaha with Garry Bush, £6310, each and then winning the £500 No Limit Hold'em £25,750. The other player to achieve the feet was Steve Au Yeung who won both £100 Pot Limit Hold,em tournaments £6,000, and £3,280. The only other tournament went to Carlo Citrone when he won £14,740 in the £250 Pot Limit Hold'em. Carlo is a much improved player this year and has had a lot of big second place finishes in some major tournaments so it was good to see him finally win a top event. Does anyone have any theories as to why players do well in a succession of tournaments and then suddenly go quiet again? If you look back at all the recent U.K results you will constantly see people doing well on consecutive days and then nothing for months.
I have been updating the database with new information about casinos in the U.K and what games and tournaments are played on a weekly basis. Most of the smaller casinos have been taken over by the 4 big chains namely Grosvenor, Gala, Stanleys, and Napoleons and these four seem less than forthcoming in giving out information. However, I have managed to get some information but anyone who has any up to date news about any event then please e-mail me.
I have added the tournament schedule for the European Poker Classics at the Victoria Casino in London but sadly, I have been informed that the U.K Masters at the Rainbow has been cancelled. This has
been a long standing event in the schedule and it is a shame to see it go. I wonder if it is because of the competition to remain profitable as the Rainbow is not part of the big four casino chains.
September is a quiet month in the U.K for tournaments with the only event being the Northern Challenge at the Grosvenor Casino in Manchester England starting on the 25th and finishing on the 29th, with the main event £500 No Limit Hold'em taking place 27th-28th. You can expect a good turn out for this festival as poker is currently thriving in and around Manchester and the casinos are taking notice. particularly Grosvenor who follow Manchester up a month later with a festival at Blackpool (schedule to be announced).
Don't forget that you can always find the results of all the U.K tournaments on PokerPages first. We have a comprehensive list of of schedules, and a full casino directory for the world. So when you are out playing then tell your friends where the best poker information site is.
Until the next newsletter good luck and please contact me with any new information.

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
The Victorian Poker Championships have recently concluded at Crown Casino with one of the young guns establishing himself as a competitive tournament player. Andrew Dimock from New Zealand won both the Pot Limit and Limit Holdem events collecting in excess of $16 000. Andrew plays often at various sites on the Internet and I am sure is looking for ways to gain entry into the 10K No limit Holdem event in January. The Main event at the Victorian Poker Championships saw many of the favourites take their seat at the final table. Mike Ivin declared the eventual winner after a long three-way battle with Billy Argyros and Sam Korman.
Several seats were won in satellite tournaments in August although there is still opportunity to get into Australia's biggest tournament cheaply. Casino Canberra will be conducting a super satellite for the 10 K event at Crown as part of their Poker Championship in October.
