Poker In America
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
I'm not sure that The Hall of Fame at Binion's Horseshoe was a success or not. The numbers seem to indicate that it wasn't but it did attract the best players from both sides of the Atlantic. Although the events had small fields, the final tables that were set up were full of household names. So it was quality not quantity that we got at Binion's.
The main event showed that the Europeans had come over in force with 3 making the final table. Peter Costa from Leicester, England proved that his wins in the U.S. earlier in the year were no fluke by taking first place and $101,520. The event attracted 54 entries with a prize pool of $253,800. Peter had a few near misses at this years Hall of Fame coming 2nd and 3rd in some of the earlier events and is truly one of the best European professional tournament players.
Since our last newsletter Event 8 was classed as perhaps the greatest final table line up ever with 20 WSOP bracelets and one World Champion. A veteran Binion's dealer said it was the best line up that he had seen. Make up your own mind by checking out the full result and report. Scotty Nguyen from Henderson took the first prize of $47,780 from 55 other entries.
Event 9 $1500 Razz went to John Juanda, which is no surprise, as he seems to excel at all games. He is obviously an exceptional all round poker player and along with Phil Ivey he always seems to feature strongly in events such as H.O.E, S.H.O.E, Triple Draw Lowball and Razz. Ivey was 4th in this event.
Estrellita Lyons won the Ladies Hold'em Event 10 from a field of only 14 picking up $3290. The field also included a six month pregnant Olga Varkonyi playing in her first tournament. Name sound familiar? Well she is the wife of current world champion Robert Varkonyi so she has obviously been given some tips as she finished 6th.
Event 11 Omaha Hi-Lo was won by Max Stern $22,210.
Event 12 Limit Hold'em was another triumph for Scotty Nguyen who made an incredible comeback from only 5 chips left to defeat Humberto Brenes who had over 100 chips. There was a great statement that Humberto made to Scotty during a lot of banter, "In Costa Rica you can only bluff your wife not your friends."
Event 14 Pot Limit Hold'em was won by John Juanda again this time winning $36,850
Event 15 Triple Draw Lowball was poorly attended with only 12 entries. O'Neil Longson triumphed wining $8,460 The $2,500 No Limit Hold'em
Event 16 showed the Americans just how good the young Brit Julian Gardner is. He followed up his 2nd place in the World Championship with wining a first prize here of $42,300. Julian comes from Manchester in England and was considered an unknown by the Americans before the World Series. He would probably be made favorite in most odds compilers list for any future tournaments.
Event 17 $2,500 Limit Hold'em had only 22 entries, which must be disappointing to the organisers. Daniel Negreanu won the event and $25,500.
Event 18 was a Media charity tournament and was won by Bob Fleck who gave the $1,500 prize to Big Brother/Big Sisters of Nevada
Event 19 $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha was won by Ron Rose $56,590
The Hall of Fame at Binions proved to be very exciting but the numbers must have disappointed both the organisers and the players. From an organisers point of view large fields mean plenty of cash action as players get knocked out and this is where they earn their money. From a players point of view - especially a European's - why travel half way around the world to play against the best 50 or so U.S players with no dead money in the tournament? Large fields and big prize pools are what most of the players and organisers want and I think that Binions have to look closely at their advertising for this tournament next year to help increase the numbers.
The other major tournament that is going on at the same time is the Heavenly Hold'em at the Commerce Casino in L.A. The numbers here were obviously higher as the buy-ins were significantly lower. The winners so far are:
Event 1 $300 Limit Hold'em David Chui $60,715
Event 2 $100 No Limit Hold'em Federico Mendoza $29,490
Event 3 $100 Pot Limit Hold'em George Marlowe $22,230
Event 4 $200 Limit Hold'em Julian Levy $17,980
Event 5 $200 No Limit Hold'em Sam Sanusi $ 25,610
Event 6 $200 Pot Limit Hold'em David Akin $19,990
Event 7 $200 Limit Hold'em Hi-Lo Sam Sanusi $12,400
Event 8 $300 Limit Hold'em Joe Lim $68,484
Event 9 $300 No Limit Hold'em Ryan Hughes $22,345
Event 10 $200 Limit Hold'em Minh Lu £27,455
The next big events on the schedule are the Four Queens Poker Classic at the Four Queens in Las Vegas 18th September - 6th October and Sweet September at the Hustler Casino in California starting on the 15th September - 2nd October.
The Main Event at the Four Queens is the $5,000 No Limit Hold'em a two-day tournament Oct 5th. It will be interesting to compare the numbers at the Four Queens with those at The Hall of Fame because I feel that the Four Queens have advertised their tournament in a better way. Details of these tournaments are available daily on PokerPages and a summary will be given in the next newsletter.

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
The Aviation Club in France are currently holding their annual Autumn Tournament. It started on the 11th September with Event 1 which was €50 No Limit Hold'em and was won by
Sloan Martin Ceccaldi from France €2910. Event 2 €50 Dealers Choice went to a local again, Robert Cohen (the man who taunted Phil Hellmuth in Late Night Poker) who picked up €1,550.
Event 3 was a super satellite and Event 4 €500 No Limit Hold'em was won by popular Irishman Frank Callaghan or as the French have put the result "Francois" Callaghan who officially collected €21,130. Top English professionals Simon 'Aces' Trumper and Carlos Citrone finished 3rd and 4th with Simon getting the lions share of 1st prize in a deal.
Robert Cohen added weight to a point in my last newsletter when I was highlighting that players seem to have one good result followed by another. Robert followed up his win in Event 2 with a win in Event 5 €100 No Limit Hold'em taking home €2,430. Event 6 €200 Pot Limit Omaha saw Eric Sala
taking the spoils and €5680. Event 7 Short Handed No Limit Hold'em was won by Ofer Ovadia €9,430 with Carlos Citrone who is high in the European Rankings picking up some valuable points by coming second. The Aviation continues until the 22nd September and you can keep up with the results on the website.
I have recently included some new tournament schedules for Europe namely The Barcelona Open in Spain 21st - 24th November, Poker Party Casinos Austria Seefeld November 22nd-23rd , The Danish 7-Card Stud Championship November 7th-9th , and the Christmas Tournament in Estonia December 16th-19th.
On a final note, could any casino managers please send me your dates for proposed tournaments in 2003? Thanks.

Poker in the U.K. Kevin Pratt of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
As I previously pointed out in the last newsletter, the month of September is pretty quiet in the U.K. so I will take the opportunity to thank all of you that have been sending me in information about tournament schedules, results, and cash action details from around the U.K. Please keep all information coming in.
I have recently added in some tournament schedules for later in the year namely The Northern Lights Poker Series at the Grosvenor Casino in Blackpool where the main event is £250 Pot Limit Hold'em on the 26th October and the Irish Winter Tournament at The Colossus Club, Dublin, Ireland where the main event is €1,000 No Limit Hold'em on the 26th October as well.
Some of the top British players have been playing in the U.S. recently and doing quite well. Peter Costa won the main event at the Hall of Fame and Julian Gardner also won an event as well. Other notables currently playing in the U.S include Surinder Sunar, Dave 'DevilFish' Ulliott, 'Mad' Marty Wilson, Chris Bjorin, and Alan Betson.
On a totally separate note it appears that Stanley Casinos are making a concerted effort to kill off poker rooms in their casinos. They have announced the closure of the popular card room in the Torquay casino from the 24th September. On top of this Annabelles Casino in Bristol has now closed it's cardroom to accommodate a new restaurant. It appears that Grosvenor seem to be expanding on their poker and Stanley's are taking the opposite approach and are closing their cardrooms. It will be interesting to see who is right.

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
Who said Poker had nothing to do with luck and that it is a game of skill? Last Thursday at 7pm in The Crown Poker Room a single hand satellite was run for the 10K event in January.
The way that this tournament (or is that lottery) works is that ten players pay $10 and are dealt one hand of Holdem. The player that wins that hand progresses to the next round where entry is $102 and is required to pay the additional $2. When ten players have either paid the $102, or won there way to this stage through the $10 round, they are dealt another one hand. The winner progresses to the third and final round with a $1020 seat and a one in ten chance of gaining entry to the main event. Again another one hand game is dealt and the winner will have the opportunity to play for their share of what is expected to be a prize pool in excess of 1 million dollars.
What this all comes down to is that it is possible for as little as $12 and a lot of luck you could be sitting in the biggest event Australia has ever seen. If you are still confused, make your way to Crown next Thursday and have a closer look in person.
The weekly events at Crown have recommenced after a short break following the Victorian Championship. $60 tournaments will start at 8pm every Thursday and $100 No Limit Holdem every Sunday at 2 pm.
Finally, Casino Canberra will be commencing The October Long Weekend of Poker on October 1. Events have buy-ins ranging from $400 to $2200 including several rebuy tournaments. Part of each entry will be retained for an overall point's winner title to be awarded at the completion of the week. Accommodation packages are also available at Crowne Plaza, contact Casino reception for details.
