Poker In America
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
The Hall of Fame finished at Binions Horseshoe and it was all move over the road to The Four Queens for the Four Queens Poker Classic hosted by Bonnie Damiano.
Event 1 $100 Limit Hold'em kicked off on September 18th and produced a tremendous field of 319 entries. The winner was Robert Tyburski, a supervisor from The Aladdin who officially picked up $11,400...Event 2 $100 No Limit Hold'em saw a slight decrease in the numbers with 270 entering but they managed 223 rebuys between them so the prize pool reached $47,821. Danny Dinh formerly from Vietnam took home 1st prize of $17,700...Asher Derei from Israel won Event 3 $200 Limit Hi/Lo with a first prize of $12,260 which made up for last year when he came 2nd in the same event after holding all the chips when heads up. Asher is well known on the European circuit and is a highly respected player.
Event 4 $200 Limit Hold'em went to Richard Santos of Fremont who was officially declared the winner although he took less prize money than Dan Bakker. Both players agreed on a deal and pushed their entire stacks in to see who was to be declared the winner...Event 5 £300 Pot Limit Hold'em saw the number of entries reduced as the buy-in went up. 131 contested the event and Knox Pressley prevailed in first for a prize of $15,240.
Event 6 $300 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo was won by Pat Enos from Hawaii and Event 7 $300 Pot Limit Omaha showed that the Europeans are well adapted to the Pot Limit games as Tony Khan, Dave Ulliott and Peter Costa all made the final table. It was Peter Costa making his forth money finish at the 4 Queens who came out the winner and this followed his triumph in the main event at The Hall of Fame. What a year for 'The Poet' as he picked up another $33,760. Peter Costa actually split the prize money with An Tran in Event 7 and Tran effectively made it two in a row by taking Event 8 $500 No Limit Hold'em. There was a large field of 152 so this produced a nice prize pool of $73,720 with Tran taking $29,940.
Event 9 $500 Omaha Hi/Lo was a marathon event that was eventually won by 'Miami' John Cernuto who picked up $18,820. Prop player for The Bike Leanfro Alvarez defeated T.J Cloutier into 2nd place in Event 10 $500 7- Card Stud, winning $12,600...Event 11 $500 Limit Hold'em was won by Allyn Jaffrey $22,310. Event 12, another Pot Limit game, this time Omaha, predictably went to European Chris Bjorin. This was the first $1,000 buy-in that attracted only 37 entries but gave Chris a first prize of $31,420 due to the fact there were 35 rebuys.
The ladies event saw 51 contestants. Event 13 $100 half Hold'em half Stud was fittingly won by the tournament host Bonnie Damiano who clearly showed she is a great tournament player as well as wonderful host.
Event 14 $1,000 Limit Hold'em saw Ray Dehkharghani scoop $17,000. Ray managed to see off both Daniel Negreanu in 2nd and T.J. Cloutier in 3rd so this was no mean feat when they were 3 handed.
You can't keep a good dragon down as Event 15 $1,000 Pot Limit Hold'em was won by David 'The Dragon' Pham. Pham probably took the first prize of $23,660 home in his new Mercedes SUV, which he won for being the leading points scorer at The Bike last month.
The 4 Queens continues through October and I will bring you the rest of the results in the next newsletter.
Over at The Hustler Casino in California the Sweet September festival has been taking place. The winners were: -
- Event 1 $100 Limit Hold'em Thomas Fillhart $6,916
- Event 2 $100 Pot Limit Hold'em Arash Ghaneian $4,598
- Event 3 $100 Limit Hold'em Rodolfo Cruz $5,894
- Event 4 $100 No Limit Hold'em Rahmat Alimi $5,358
- Event 5 $100 No Limit Hold'em Ngoc Huynh $4,453
- Event 6 $100 Omaha Hi/Lo Harold Kaufler $4,789
- Event 7 $100 Limit Hold'em Aaron Long $5,889
- Event 8 $100 Limit Hold'em Zaynab Mogadam $4,637
- Event 9 $100 Pot Limit Hold'em Ngoc Huynh $3,200

- Event 11 $100 No Limit Hold'em Daniel Goldman $3,989
- Event 12 $100 No Limit Hold'em Steven Dell $3,717
- Event 13 $100 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo Ferdinand Sicam $4,409
- Event 14 $100 Limit Hold'em Domingo Encisco $4,103
- Event 15 $100 Limit Hold'em Jon Moonves $3,951
- Event 16 $100 Pot Limit Hold'em Sirous Baghchehsaraie $4000
- Event 17 $100 Limit Hold'em San Pedro Rosaria $3,800
We have added to the database on Poker Pages the 'tentative' schedule for the 2002 U.S Poker Championship at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It starts on the 2nd of December with a $300 Limit Hold'em and concludes with the main event $7,500 No Limit Holdem. For Stud lovers there is a $4,000 buy in 15th December.
Upcoming events between now and our next newsletter include The Caribbean Poker Classic from Aruba and Thunder by the Bay in San Pablo, CA.
Finally I am going to elect the player who's been 'HOT' since the last newsletter and it goes to Peter Costa from Leicester England for winning the Hall of Fame Main Event and winning at the 4 Queens as well. He has had plenty of other final table appearances and I'm sure there will be a few who will be glad to see him return to England.
Look out to see who's 'HOT' in the next newsletter.

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
There has been plenty of Action in Europe since the last newsletter at both the Autumn Tournament at the Aviation in France and in Austria at the Austrian Classics.
In the last newsletter we got up to Event 7 and with Event 8 being a satellite so I will continue with the result of Event 9 € 500 Pot Limit Omaha which was won by French based Englishman Ashley Alterman who took home €16,180. Event 10 was another satellite so the final tournament was the main event, Event 11 which was won by X-22 €48,600. Who the hell is X-22 I hear you ask. Well I think he is an American called Paul Magriel but who really knows?
Over in Austria the Austrian Classics started off with Event 1 €75 Limit Hold'em Jackpot Tournament which attracted 147 entries and gave Jorg Kudernak €10,835 for 1st place.
Event 2 €100 Pot Limit Hold'em was won by Peter Simon with Jac Arama picking up valuable European ranking points in 3rd place. Jac seems locked in a battle with both Garry Bush and Carlos Citrone to be the overall top ranked European player this year and all 3 of them seem to be entering every event between now and the end of the year.
Event 3 €100 Pot Limit Omaha was won by the World Heads Up Champion Kiril Gerasimov from Russia who seems to be able to get a visa for any country. He's a great young player who is well liked on the European circuit even though he speaks hardly any English. Kiril picked up €8,870 for the win.
Event 4 No Limit Hold'em saw the entry fee increase to €150 and was won by Johann Bruno €12,100 and Event 5 €500 Limit Hold'em had 72 entries and was won by Peter Hajszan €12,900.
Event 6 €300 Limit 7-Card Stud was won by Mario Yetkin €18,270. Event 7 €1000 No Limit Hold'em was the main event and had a field of 85 entries. It became an all Australian affair which was only spoiled by Robert Binelli from Italy as Mel Judah came third and Jeff Lissandro won the event and €28,000.
Event 8 €500 Pot Limit Omaha was won by Paul Magriel (a.k.o. X-22) €24,500 and the final tournament Event 9 Limit 7-Card Stud was won by Jan Smith.
The next major European Event outside of the U.K is the PokerEM the Worlds premier 7-Card Stud tournament that takes place in the pretty Austrian town of Baden. I will be giving you an update of this in the next newsletter...Actually, hot off the press, Mark and Tina have just returned back to Spain from Baden to give us the update on the event.
What a wonderful venue, and the food, wow. This is one of the best run tournaments we have ever attended, and the staff were always there to ensure the poker players were definitely taken care of, and if not sitting battling it out in the very tough qualifiers then they were organising a very good cash game for you to participate in. Mark tried to qualify on the 2nd day, and reached the 10th level, but with the limit at 1500/3000 there was not much time to sit back and wait for the cards to find you. Congratulations to all of those that qualified for the Super Final, and very special congratulations to Shirley Lewis from Luton, who reached 4th place.
It was great to see so many of the familiar faces from England and an absolute delight to meet with Roman Melchert, who we thank for our kind invitation. Many Congratulations go to winner Heinz H. Piroth from Mainz, Germany.
I have recently included some new tournament schedules for the Christmas Poker Championships in Bregenz Austria and the Winter Tournament at the Aviation France.
Finally I am going to elect the player who's been 'HOT' since the last newsletter seeing as I did the same in the U.S.A. section. I think it must go to American Paul Magriel who won the main event at the Aviation and also won the Pot Limit Omaha at the Austrian Classics.
Look out to see whose 'HOT' in the next newsletter.

Poker in the U.K. Kevin Pratt of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Since the last newsletter we have had the Northern Challenge at the Grosvenor Casino in Manchester. Event 1 £100 Pot Limit Hold'em was won by the popular Gareth Jones, who proved that you can graduate from being a bank manager to a professional poker player by winning £3950. Event 2 £100 Pot Limit Omaha was won by B. Ooi. I don't know Ooi he is but he took home $5,120 for his nights work.
Event 3 £500 No Limit Hold'em was billed as a 2-day event but the organisers must have been disappointed with only 27 players. One player who was not disappointed was Tim Flanders who won his first major event and a prize of £9,490. The £250 Pot Limit Holdem Event 4 had 42 entries and was won by R. Fatoretchi £5,860 and the last tournament Event 5 £50 Pot Limit Hold'em was won by Roy Brindley £4200. It appears there are plenty of players in and around Manchester as 126 entered the final event but it appears the £500 buy -in level was not that popular.
Napoleons Casino in Sheffield have announced their Poker Festival which takes place December 4th to 8th and I hope that people support this as it is their first major event.
If anyone knows any schedules that are not yet in our database then please contact me.
The next major Event in the U.K is the European Poker Classics 2002 at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London. This is one of the biggest events in the European calendar and I will bring you the results in the next newsletter. You can of course get the results as they happen on the website.

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
Casino Canberra has just concluded their Poker Championship and have given away another seat for the 10 K Main Event at Crown in January. Kevin Khiouss was the eventual winner of the 18-player field that participated in this satellite. Kevin had a great week and managed to take home prize money in two other events. The other standout performance was from tournament regular Mike Ivan who won two tournaments. The main event was won by Billy "Croc" Argyros who is always about when it comes to the final table of main events in Australia.
Unfortunately, due to work commitments I was unable to attend this event but was kept up to date by Glen "Gofor" who provided regular reports. As has come to be expected from Canberra Casino the staff were wonderful and professional and the hospitality tremendous with free drinks and lunch were provided for all tournament players.
The Crown small weekly tournaments are attracting an ever-growing field, with around 70 entrants on Thursdays and 40 on Sundays. These events have seen many of the local players improve their tournament skills, no doubt getting ready for their chance at the big time in January. The weekly event that is attracting the most interest at the moment is the single hand $10 tournament run every Thursday. This involves dealing every entrant one Holdem hand in order to progress to future rounds and their chance to enter the 10 K event in January.
