Poker In America
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in America

There's nothing better than combining a holiday with a bit of poker, so the place to head to since the last newsletter was Aruba for the Caribbean Poker Classic at the Excelsior Casino where there were 2 tournaments a day at 4pm and 9pm which is perfect if you want to laze the day away on the beach.

The Costa Rica Classic got off to a flying start with 268 players in the first event that managed a total of 5526 rebuys in this first event, bring the prize pool up to $55,145 which was won by Herb VanDyke.

Humberto Brenes

The 2nd event which was also a No Limit Hold'em, attracted 238 players and the rebuys were up for this event, breaking the record of the day before with 5467, and Spider Webb took home $19,900 out of the $49,675 prize pool. The reigning World Poker Open champion won the 3rd event, and the field was much lower with 150 players and 703 rebuys, giving him a nice sum of $25,570 to take home.

The next Major Event is the World Poker Finals from Foxwoods Resort Casino between October 27th to November 17th which culminates in The World Poker Tour Main Event £10,000 No Limit Hold'em.

Richard Santos

The player who's 'HOT' since the last newsletter is a bit hard seeing as there were so many tournaments and no one had a run of results so I'm going to elect Richard Santos from Freemont, CA who won Event 1 at Thunder by the Bay $16,190. This followed him winning Event 4 at The Four Queens $14,340.

The World Series of Poker this week announced the dates for 2003. The casino employees event kicks off on the 15th of April and starts the 34th WSOP 35 events in total without the main 5 day event. There will be a media event, and the Seniors event. The final of the main event will take place on Friday May 23rd. For more details click here.

Look out to see who's 'HOT' in the next newsletter.

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe

The only festival going on in Europe at the moment is the Moscow Open at the Cosmos Casino in Moscow Russia. Poker in Russia is growing at a rapid pace with some sort of tournament going on nearly every day in Moscow. I was over there earlier in the year and was treated very well and found Russia an enjoyable experience.

  • Event 1 drew 71 entries for the $200 No Limit Texas Hold'em and was won by Oleg Kushnarenko from Russia $11,402
  • Event 2 had 63 entries for the $200 Pot Limit Omaha and was won by Akop Vardanyan from Armenia $11,020
  • Event 3 $300 Pot Limit 7 Card Stud went to Englishman Shaun Hayes $10,033 who has shown a liking to Stud as he won a few tournaments in Slovenia last year.
  • Event 4 $300 Pot Limit Hold'em was an English victory again as Garry Bush surged to the top of the European Rankings by winning $16,340.
There are still 4 tournament results to come from Moscow including the main Event $1,500 No Limit Hold'em Freezout and I will bring the results in the next newsletter.

Garry Bush

As soon as Moscow is finished most of the players are heading down to the Taleon Club in St Petersburg Russia for the European Nations Poker Team Challenge. The top 4 ranked English players Jac Arama, Garry Bush, Carlos Citrone and Simon 'Aces' Trumper all failed to make the English team although they are going to the event for the supporting tournaments.

Currently the English team consists of Murray Brown, Surinder Sunar, Ben Roberts, Julian Gardner, Peter Costa and Ram Vaswani.

Other confirmed teams are from France (captain Pascal Perrault), Scotland (captain Stewart Carnegie) Sweden (captain Ken Lennard), Finland (captain Aki Pyssing) and Holland (captain Marcel Luske).

Poker in the U.K.
Kevin Pratt of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.

Since the last newsletter we have had the European Poker Classics at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London. As always this was a well attended venue with large prize pools. Event 1 £200 Pot Limit Hold'em always draws a big crowd and this was no exception. The Vic packed in 166 players which is probably the maximum allowed and there were 169 rebuys which produced a total prize pool of £67,000. Y. Xirotyris came in first and picked up £25,460.

Lucy Rokach

Event 2 £500 Pot Limit 7 Card Stud had 88 entries and was won by F. Santos from Spain £16,530 Event 3 £500 Pot Limit Omaha also had 88 entries with G. Crawley winning £24,890 The $500 buy in No Limit Hold'em Event 4 had a great turnout of 154 players and it was left to a lady to show the way. Lucy Rokach from England won £36,765 to underline why she is the best female player in England, if not Europe. Lucy is a tremendously aggressive player who will not be bullied out of a pot easily so trying to bluff her is a foolish move as I found out to my cost once.

Pascal Perrault

Top French player Pascal Perrault who has had some of his best results at the 'Vic' was back in winning ways again by taking Event 5 £200 Pot Limit Hi/Lo and £19,228.

Ross Boatman

The Main Event was the £2,000 No Limit Hold'em which attracted 107 entries and produced a prize pool of £214,000. Ross Boatman from The Hendon Mob took the honours and it was a popular success. Ross has had a few seconds this year so it was great to see him take first spot and £74,000.

The full results from each event are on the website if you want to check out the minor positions.

The other tournament that was scheduled in England was the U.K Masters, a long established festival at The Rainbow in Birmingham. Unfortunately this event was cancelled.

The next action in the U.K includes The Harbour Lights at Brighton, The Northern Lights at Blackpool and The Irish Winter Tournament in Dublin. Keep up to date with all the results as they happen by visiting the tournament results section of the PokerPages website.

Finally there is a new poker club that has opened in Dublin called Full House Poker. They are running a €100 + €10 No Limit Hold'em tournament on Sunday 8th December which they have called The Irish Masters.

Good luck to all of the Players in the U.K and Ireland over the next few weeks as there is plenty of choice as to where to play.

Don't forget that you can still win a $10,000 seat at The World Poker Open by entering The WPO warm up on PokerPages for free so tell your friends.

You can e-mail me with any thoughts, views, or general information at kevin@pokerpages.com

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor

Twelve months after the closure of Poker at Adelaide Casino some of the local Poker enthusiasts have built their own club and become the South Australian branch of The Australian Poker Association (APA).

Thanks to Glen Athanassiou who has taken on this enormous task, Poker survives in the city of churches. With the help of the New South Wales branch of The APA this venture looks like being a hit with all of the local players and may even attract a few new ones.

The game will work like this. It will operate from 5pm on Sunday night and will run until 3am the next morning with each week beginning with a short No Limit Holdem freezeout tournament. Membership is required and is currently a very reasonable $20 per year. The game is located close to Adelaide city and will be a 5/10, round of each, Holdem/Omaha game. Professional dealers have volunteered their services for free and tipping is not permitted. To cover costs a nominal charge per player per hour will be charged, currently set at $5.

For more information, and membership forms, contact Glen "Gofor" Athanassio, South Australian Representative of Australian Poker Association on 0416 353 380 or 08-8460 6082, anytime. Alternatively you can email him at glengofor@pokernetwork.com.

I am sure that this South Australian experiment will be looked at very closely by many interested parties from around Australia who have talked about doing something like this for a long time. Perhaps this is the stimulus to show players that the home game is still alive and organized games can be run with a little effort.

Now, at last, I have an excuse to visit Adelaide.

For any other questions about Poker in Australia please email me.
