Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
PokerSchoolOnline Member Scores Big in L.A
Hello again everybody and welcome back to Poker In America. Some exciting news from The Commerce Casino's LA poker Classic just barely made it in before our last newsletter went out last month. Of course I'm talking about PokerSchoolOnline member, Daniel Rentzer's impressive 2nd place finish in the Main Event. Though Daniel would have loved to have taken 1st place, I know the $253,595 he won for 2nd place likely softened the blow of being the last person to be knocked out by the winner, Gus Hansen of Denmark ($507,190).
Along with his big payday, Daniel also won a seat in up-coming Bellagio $25 K Tournament as well as the respect and admiration of his peers at PSO. Going down the stretch, Daniel had to make his way though the likes of David Pham (4th), Humberto Brenes (7th), Carlos Mortensen (10th), and Men "The Master" Nguyen (15th), just to name a few. Even with those heavy hitters still in contention, Daniel still somehow managed to go into the final day of play as chip leader! Daniel, a student of the game for many years, must have felt a tremendous accomplishment just knowing he outlasted all those champions. Well done Daniel, see ya' at the WSOP?
In other Poker news, PokerSchool instructor, featured writer, poker pro and all around nice guy, Nolan Dalla recently submitted an article to PokerPages entitled So You Wanna' Be a Tournament Pro? Fuhgetaboutit! The article has had the poker grapevine buzzing ever since. Nolan, who has been reporting on the tournament circuit for nearly a decade, recently returned from covering the WPO in Tunica only to find that many of the perceptions he had about tournament poker and poker players were false. For a great peek into life on the road with the tournament circuit, you'd be hard pressed to find articles like this anywhere -- in print or on the Net. Of course, every story has two sides, so when you're done reading Nolan's article, you can read poker pro Daniel Negreanu's take on Nolan's article by clicking here.
Since it hasn't been that long since we last reported, here are links to the results from all of your favorite tournaments:
Larry Flynt's Poker Challenge Cup - Still Running thru March 9th
WPT Invitational: $200,000 Free Roll - Complete
Spring Poker Tournament - Still Running thru March 8th
Looking ahead to the remainder of the month of March, there's plenty of action to be had. There's the annual classic at the Bicycle, Winnin' o' The Green March 10 to 25, Station Poker Classic March 12 to 15 at Casino Regina, The World Poker Challenge 2003 March 13 to April 2 at the Reno Hilton, and to wrap up the action until we meet again is Ocean's 11's Rat Pack. And as always, PokerPages is always the first to bring you the results, so check back regularly.
Next month we'll be looking at these tournaments and much more, so until then, may all your houses be full,
Tim Kopp

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
After the excitement of the Euro Finals of Poker in France the action in Europe switched to the quiet town of Bregenz in Austria for the Omaha Poker Championship. 30 players qualified throughout the week to produce a prize pool of 105,837 for the final, and it was German player Woolfgang Pilecki who walked away with a first prize of 29,630 from Erich Kollmann of Austria.
The other winners during the week were 200 Pot Limit Omaha, Van Tanh Tran from Austria 26,200, 300 Limit Stud, Peschel from Germany 16,580, and 200 Limit Hold'em, Megnet from Switzerland 10,740.
The next major event in Europe will be the Vienna Spring Festival at the Concord Card Casino. This is another of Europe's premier events as it features the popular European World Series of Poker Trial which is played to the exact format as the WSOP but at a fraction of the cost. I am sure Martin Aigner from Austria will be back to defend the title that he won in 2002 when he beat Tony G from Australia to a first prize of 74,700.
The latest schedule that I have received is from the Astoria Palace Club and Casino in Estonia where they are holding the 3rd Estonian Poker Championships from May 13th to May 18th. Thank you to Poker Manager Andres Burget for keeping me informed about poker in Estonia and Latvia.
Later on this month the action returns to Paris for the Spring Tournament on the 26th May and this time the schedule has a few lower buy in events as opposed to the Euro Finals.
Good luck to everyone this coming month,
Kevin Pratt

Poisonous Poker: A Poker Cop Mystery
By Robert Arabella
Part 2 - The Dealer's Story
There have been three poisoning deaths at the Las Vegas Majestic's Poker Room. The Chief of Poker Room Security, Talbot, The Poker Cop, continues the investigation.
I call the LVPD Switchboard. I ask for Detective Rook, Chief of the Las Vegas Strip Police. "Ex-detective Talbot," Rook says, "what have you done this time?" I ignore this. "Rook. I'm at the Majestic Poker Room. I've got three fatalities, possible poisoning victims, all dead within minutes of each other, all elderly, all players from the same table, all with Poker Room Bar drinks in their hands. Fallon's shutting down the poker room bar. I don't how many victims we're going to have but it's already ugly and could get a lot uglier." I stop. Listen. Rook is dispatching EMS units. The ERs at Vegas General and Mercy Hospital are alerted for casualties. He comes back on the line, "I'm five minutes away. I want you to . . ." Read more

No Limit Fridays
By Frankie Cardulla
I have recently moved to Las Vegas from the Chicagoland area, and have become involved in the weekly poker tournament scene here. One of my favorites, is the no-limit tournament held every Friday night, at the Orleans.
They get good turnouts, usually with fields in excess of 100+ players. The mix of
players include beginners, tourists, locals, and even some famous tournament players. Susie Isaacs, Oklahoma Johnny Hale and John Strzemp, who finished second to Stu Ungar in the 1997 World Series of Poker, were playing on this night.
The buy-in is $60, for which you receive 400 in tournament chips. There is one optional
re-buy for $40, anytime within the first hour. This re-buy gets you an additional 800 worth of chips. For $3, you can purchase a dealers bonus card, worth 100 tournament chips. The monies from these cards go exclusively to the dealers, and are not included in the prize pool. If you exercise all your options, total cost will be $103. The Orleans gives out bounties in this tournament, $10 for each player you eliminate from the field. On this night, there were exactly 100 players who bought in, with 92 re-buys. 10 places were paid with $2,375 for 1st, 1,380 for 2nd and $845 for third... Read more

Poker in the U.K. Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
As we approach the end of the first week of March there has been no significant tournament action in the UK or Ireland to report on. But that's about to change.
The big event for March is the eagerly anticipated British Open at the Vic in London, which will run from March 10th to the 16th. Most of the top UK and Irish players will attend and we expect healthy numbers of foreign players to also compete.
Napoleons Casino in Sheffield will host their March Festival from the 26th to the 28th and will feature 3 tournaments. Full details are also on our website.
We will of course bring you all the results here at PokerPages. The other big event is, of course, the hugely popular Poker Million 2003. Although it is an invite only event, it has generated great interest due to the fact that Sky Sports have been televising the six heats leading up to the final, which will be broadcast live on March 14th at 8:00pm on Sky Sports 1. Since our last newsletter heat 5 of 6 was televised with the last heat being televised on Friday 7th March at 10:00pm on Sky Sports 1 (with a repeat at 00:30am, and again on Sky Sports Extra at 06:30am on Saturday 8th). So I'll take this opportunity to recap on events to date and give you the results of heat 5.
Poker Million 2003 Update
Already qualified from the first 4 heats are:
- Heat 1 - Steve Davis (the professional snooker and pool player)
- Heat 2 - Tony Bloom (who finished 4th in the inaugural Poker Million tournament)
- Heat 3 - Bruce Atkinson (the colourful Elvis impersonator who is no slouch at poker)
- Heat 4 - Guy Bowles (the man with 2 nicknames - "The Iceman" or "The Calculator")
So on to Heat 5. The 6 players line-up consisted of:
- Barry Hearn (the Executive Chairman of Matchroom Sport who are the promoters of Poker Million)
- Barny Boatman - the amicable member of "The Hendon Mob" group of London based poker professionals
- Eric Semel - An American cash game specialist looking to make it big on the tournament trail
- Dave Colclough - A consistent player at making final table appearances
- Carlo Citrone - Has made vast strides in the European Rankings and is a force to be reckoned
with.
- Joe Beevers - another member of "The Hendon Mob" - this should be interesting!

When the dust settled, it was the experience of the two Hendon Mobsters, Barny and Joe, that prevailed as they ended heads-up against each other with almost equal chip amounts. Who would prevail when the immovable object met with the irresistible force? Pocket Kings proved decisive again, as they had done when Dave Ulliott found them against Steve Davis. Unfortunately in Dave's case they were slain, when he tried to trap Steve with them and didn't raise pre-flop. Steve made 2 pair on the flop with an ugly 7 3 in the hole and knocked Dave out.
However, this time the mighty Kings did what they were supposed to do to inferior hands. Barny, still reeling from losing a lot of chips to Joe as the favourite in the particular hand (Joe had gone all-in with 8 9 offsuit and Barney called with the Ace and Deuce of clubs, but Joe flopped an 8) decided the blinds were valuable enough to try steal with a weak hand. He shoved all-in preflop with 9 10 hoping to find Joe with rags he couldn't call with. Barny's sense of timing when steal-raising is usually impeccable, but this time he got it wrong. He found Joe with pocket Kings and Barny's adams apple went into overdrive. The flop brought some hope when it came down 4 3 9. Another 9 or 8 would save him. The turn was a 6 and the river a disappointing Jack for Barny. It was all over and we'll see Joe in the final next week. Congratulations Joe and well played. No doubt Barny will try make amends at the British Open this month, hoping to scoop a big prize to fuel a lifetime supply of Jaffa Cakes; his favourite nibble we hear!
Don't forget to watch the final, live on March 14th, at 8:00pm on Sky Sports 1. It will be repeated at 00:30 hours that night, also on Sky Sports 1, and a second repeat will be shown at 06:00am on the Sky Sports Extra channel on Sunday 15th. I'll give a full report in the next newsletter and also cover events as they transpire at the Vic.
Until next time, take care

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
The National Poker Championships have just concluded at Casino Canberra with many of the familiar faces filling the places in all of the events. Jason Gray took out the $2000 buy in No limit Holdem event that attracted 24 of Australia's best tournament players. Billy "The Croc" Argyros was good enough to finish second after a great week of tournaments winning the overall points score.
While the heavyweights of Poker were fighting it out in Canberra, a dealers tournament was being planned in Melbourne by one of Crowns ex-dealers Matt "The Craw" O'Meara. A total of 24 casino staff (past and present) played in the $200 buyin event that had been planned for over 12 months. Unfortunately at this time I was in a wonderful place called Nundroo and was unable to play. As it turned out, of the 24 players that entered this tournament around 20 were Poker dealers who were yet again outplayed by an "outsider". Minh "The Merciless" was just too good on the day and gave The Crown Poker dealers another lesson on tournament play.
I am sure that with all the lessons that the Crown dealers have been given lately they are due to put some of this experience into practice and may actually play to their potential in the New Zealand Poker Championships that will commence on 15th March at Christchurch Casino. This tournament is sure to be a sellout as places are filling fast with locals and many players that will again make the journey across the Tasman.
Christchurch Casino has always been very hospitable to Poker players and I am sure that 2003 will be no exception. Anyone that chooses to attend this event I am sure will have a great time either in the tournaments, live games or swapping stories at the bar. I look forward to seeing many familiar faces and catching some great Poker action.
For any other questions about Poker in Australia please email me.
