Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
W.S.O.P. Anyone?
Hello again everybody, welcome back to Poker In The USA.
It's hard to believe we're already more than half way through
the month of April. Being on the cusp of May means only
one-thing to poker players around the world, it means its
time for the 34th
World Series of Poker. However, before we jump into
that, let's pick up where we left off last month at The
Bellagio's Five-Star
World Poker Classic and The Foxwoods Casino's New
England Poker Classic.
First we turn our attention to Las Vegas and the Bellagio.
When we last met, there were only 3 more events until the
$25,000 buy-in World Poker Tour Finals. (Note: If anyone
is following the WPT on the Travel channel and doesn't want
to know who wins the Final show, skip over this section
because the winners will be revealed.) Before we get to
the Final event though, lets look at how the action leading
up to it played out.
Event
9 was Omaha Hi/Lo. 69 players scraped up the $2,500
to enter and managed to buld the prize pool too $167,325.
WSOP Bracelet winner Phil Ivey won the event and took home
just a hair under $67,000. Other players of note that made
the final table were, Howard Lederer, "Miami"
John Cernuto and Toto Leonidas
Event
10 was Omaha of the Pot Limit variety and a few more
people showed up for the day's events. Only 81 players needed
to make a prize pool of $196,425 in this $2,500 buy in event.
Jan Sorenson of Odenske, Denmark would take 1st place and
almost $80,000. Noted author Jim McManus (of WSOP final
table fame) would take 3rd. Jim has a new book out on his
experiences in Vegas called Positively 5th Street, If you
like good poker stories and appreciate good writing, you
should stop reading this and go pick up his book, it's great.
There
was one more official event before the finals. That was
Event
11, No Limit Hold'em. The Management of the Bellagio
would be giving a seat to the main event forthe winner of
Event 11 and if 1 seat to the final already wasn't enough
for Howard Lederer, 2 would not be plenty as he went on
to beat out the other 212 to collect $220,820 and his 2nd
$25,000 seat. No official word on if a final table deal
was made.
***Warning WPT Final Episode Spoiler***
Finally, it was the day everyone was waiting for. All year
players from around the world duked it out over 4 continents
to win seats to the World Poker Tour Finals. If you didn't
win your seat, it was going to cost you a crisp $25K to
get one, and from the looks of it, quite a few people did
just that. 111 players started the event and created of
prize pool of over 2.5 million dollars ($2,691,750). 1st
place would net $1,011,886. The match would be played over
the next 5 days. Phil Ivey, who I would expect to see at
a few final tables this year at the WSOP led after Day
1 by almost 100,000 chips over his nearest competitor,
Jimmy Tran. At the end of Day
2 Phil had lost some ground but still found himself
in the top 10 chip holders. Ted Forrest now had control
and was chip leader by about only 20,000 chips. The end
of Day
3 surprised me as I found Doyle Brunson among the chip
leaders in 5th place. Don't get me wrong, if anyone can
beat that game it's Doyle, but I was surprised that he got
up from his big cash games to play in this tournament. I
guess with that kind of prize money at stake, Doyle was
going to take a shot at it. Day
4, the bubble day we were already into the money, but
only 6 would move past this day and play at the final table.
Phil Ivey must have gotten the memo because he made a charge
late in the day to become chip leader going into final day
action. The others to join Phil at the final table would
be Kirill Gerasimov, Alan Goehring, Doyle Brunson, and James
Hoeppner. In the end the $1,011,886 1st place prize would
go to the player I know the least about. Alan Goehring of
Henderson, NV is crowned your 2003 WPT Champion, his win
automatically gets him a seat into next years $25K WPT finals.
Way to go Alan, what a score!
Hats off to the Bellagio Staff for a successful year of
tournaments. This year they paid out over $10,559,710 to
the winners. That's quite a few tacos.
Another event that just finished up was the New
England Poker Classic at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino.
In what's become the east coast's favorite springtime tournament,
players from all over the country managed to create huge
prize pools for a budget buy in. In the final, 170 of New
England's best squared off to become the New England Champ.
Scott Byron (Flushing, NY) took first and $91,000.
Action for the rest of the month in anywhere except Vegas
will be slow as Poker Rooms know that the World Series of
Poker 2003 has just got underway. Remember that PokerPages
posts the results on the site immediately after each event
concludes with pictures, payouts, and exclusive reports
from PokerSchool's own, Nolan Dalla, so be the first on
the block to know who won the days events. The first six
days have already been played and you can see the results
here.
Rather than splitting the coverage over 2 newsletters, next
month we'll be taking a look at a day by day breakdown of
each event that you won't want to miss! Until then be sure
to check back to Pokerpages regularly for your daily updates.
Odds and Ends:
For those of you who don't have the bankroll for the WSOP
but still love tournament poker and big paydays, you might
want to take a ride to the Bicycle Casino where the Mini
Series of Poker is just getting under way. The mini
series follows the WSOP schedule but have affordable buy-ins
for the budget minded (like me).
Make your reservations now for the 5th Annual Jack
Binion World Poker Open in Tunica, MS. The dates are
announced and the schedule is in so have a look. This years
winner is guaranteed at least a 1 million dollar prize!
So there, you have no more excuses, you have to be there;
you've had ample warning. The event will take place January
6 to 29, 2004. See you there.
That's it for this month's Poker in the USA. If you know
of any events in your area that aren't listed in our Tournament
Directory, please email me at tim@pokerpages.com
and I'll update the site as soon as I get the info. Don't
forget to come back next month when we focus on this Year's
WSOP
On the River,
PS - My Pick for the 2003 WSOP Champion: Chip Jett
Until then, see ya at the final table,
Tim Kopp

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
There was not much action in Europe these past 2 weeks,
so I thought I would write about 3 Europeans who I feel
have a chance to win a bracelet in the WSOP.
Top of my list of players is someone I have been watching
for a long time now namely Kirill Gerasimov from Moscow
Russia. Many Americans will have been unaware of Kirill
but his name will be on peoples lips after his recent second
place in the Bellagio World Poker Tour $25,000 event. Kirill
picked up over half a million dollars alone playing in that
so he has the bankroll to compete in plenty of WSOP events
and I expect a strong showing from the quiet man from Russia.
For those who are unaware Kirill is currently the official
World Heads Up Champion and in my view is probably the best
player in Europe at the moment. If you look back at my archived
newsletters I predicted that Kirill could well be destined
for WSOP glory.
[The
player who is 'HOT' at the moment is a player who has been
'HOT' all year. He is one of the best players around in
Europe and I think he will go on to better things at the
World Series. He has the perfect temperament for the game
and is strong at all forms of Poker. Kirill Gerasimov won
in Moscow, St Petersburg and Holland since the last newsletter.
On top of that he is already the World Heads Up Champion
and in my view he is destined to win a World Series Bracelet.]
November 8th, 2002 Vol. 2 Issue 20
A
player who is currently running into form at the right time
is Marcel Luske from Holland. Marcel was the European No1
ranked player in 2001 and he also had a good tournament
at the Bellagio winning $25,000 after getting his seat in
a satellite. Marcel is fearless, aggressive and plays many
hands. If he smells weakness he is not afraid to put his
chips in with nothing and is a great reader of other players
hands. Marcel also has the bankroll to compete in many events
at the WSOP but in particular I expect him to feature in
the Omaha Hi/Lo events, as these are his strongest games.
I watched Marcel last year in the 5K buy in and he played
superb to finally finish 3rd.
Finally
if you are looking for an Omaha winner then look no further
than the best Omaha player in the world namely Rob Hollink
from Holland. Rob is double European Omaha Champion having
won the tournament in 2001 and 2003. Rob has won many Omaha
tournaments and I make him a firm favorite for any of the
pot limit Omaha tournaments which the Europeans clearly
excel at.
Good Luck to all Europeans at the WSOP

Poisonous Poker: A Poker Cop Mystery
By Robert Arabella
Part 4- Confession
There have been three poisoning deaths at the Las Vegas
Majestic's Poker Room. The Chief of Poker Room Security,
Talbot, The Poker Cop, continues the investigation.
"Mrs. Tallifiero, I'm Detective Rook of the LVPD Strip
Division. I have evidence, irrefutable evidence, that you
have tonight poisoned three people. You are a mass murderer.
Don't even bother to deny it. We know it, and we can prove
in court. You're as guilty as sin. If you confess, in full,
right now, I will do everything in my power to save you
from the death penalty. Otherwise you will be prosecuted
to the fullest extent of the law and the law shows no mercy
to those who won't confess."
Mary looks at Rook in puzzled silence. "I don't understand
. . . I . . ." The words "poison," "murder,"
and "death penalty" sink in slowly. Mary now looks
at Rook as if he is insane. "I . . . what? . . . WHAT!"
She shakes from side to side. She squeezes her eyes closed
and then opens them quickly - and seems surprised that she
has not woken up from this nightmare. She looks around frantically
for someone who is sane. First at Red Penny, who refuses
to make eye contact, and then at me. "Talby,"
she asks, "What's going on? Tell him this is some kind
of mistake. You know me. I never . . . I couldn't . . .
Talby, I swear to you . . .". . Read

Congress Votes to Ban Internet Gambling: President Bush
Expected to Sign Bill into Law
(UPI) WASHINGTON -- After months of intense political debate
cutting across party lines, the U.S. House of Representatives
on Thursday finally passed the "Internet Gambling Prohibition
Act" by a roll-call vote of 237-198. President George
W. Bush is expected to sign the bill into law sometime early
next week.
The bill makes it a federal crime to place any wager over
the Internet. According to estimates, up to nine million
Americans gamble from their personal computers every day.
This includes a wide range of gambling activities -- including
poker playing, sports betting, and popular casino games
such as blackjack and roulette. If approved by the President,
anyone convicted of gambling online could face the death
penalty. Read

Poker in the U.K. Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Update on British and Irish players playing in Las Vegas
Bellagio's Five-Star World Poker Classic
At the beginning of April, before the WSOP got underway
at Binions, the Bellagio held the Five-Star
World Poker Classic A number of British and Irish players
made the trip to play there, and also to play in the WSOP,
which started on April 15th. A number of them placed in
the money.
In
the $1,500 buy-in Pot Limit Hold'em event, 3 players from
England made the final table. Dave "Devilfish"
Ulliott from Hull ended up heads-up with, in many people's
opinion the best tournament player in the world, T.J. Cloutier.
T.J. won this particular battle but Dave still picked up
$49,470 for his second place finish. That should pay his
travel costs! Sunny Nijtran from Birmingham and Julian Gardner
from Manchester finished 9th and 10th, winning $3,958 and
$2,969 respectively.
2 English players made the final table of the $1,500 No
Limit Hold'em game, from a field of 249. Jamie Posner from
Luton did battle heads-up with Eskimo Clark and had to settle
for second place in the end. Nevertheless, he pocketed $67,400,
so not a bad days work. The Devilfish also made the final
table and came in 5th, winning $15,165. It was a tough final
table, which included Johnny Chan, Huck Seed and Erik Seidel.
Perhaps
the most interesting result was the $2,500 buy-in Pot Limit
Omaha game, where the final table of 9 contained 5 British
and Irish players and 2 other Europeans. This highlights
how good the Europeans are at Pot Limit as it is the game
of choice here. Seasoned player Marcel Luske of Holland
took first place honours and $67,512. Padraig Parkinson
of Ireland took second and $38,819. Third was Jeff Duval
of London with $20,254. Lucy Rokach of Stoke was 4th with
$11,815. Derek Baxter of London took 7th spot and $5,907,
and Jason Gray, also from London, finished 9th with $3,375.
The big event at the Bellagio was the 5 day No-Limit Hold'em
tournament, with a whopping $25,000 buy-in. Only one English
player made the final table. It was Derek Baxter again.
The number 7 must be significant for Derek because, as in
the Pot Limit Omaha event, he also finished 7th in this
one. This time however, 7th place meant $66,661, so I don't
think he was overly disappointed.
The 34th World Series of Poker, 2003, at Binions Las Vegas
The 2003
WSOP kicked off on April 15th and will run for 5 weeks
until May 23rd. In my last newsletter I profiled some of
the players I felt could win the big one in May. So far,
with only 4 events played, none of our players have hit
the money. That said, many of them are still in Ireland
and the U.K., playing in the events in Dublin (the Hendon
Mob were there), and elsewhere in the U.K. Many will travel
out this week and next week when the events get bigger ($2,500
- $5,000) buy-ins, so expect to see a few familiar names
at the final tables. We will bring you all the results and
detailed reports, as they happen, here at PokerPages.
Results from Luton, Brighton and Dublin
Grosvenor Luton Results
Since my last newsletter earlier this month, there have
been 3 tournaments in the UK and Ireland. The first action
was in Luton where the Grosvenor kicked off their Spring
Festival.
First
up was the £100 Pot Limit 7 Card Stud event, which
attracted 90 players. Dave Morten took this won and £8,440,
beating Ram Vaswani of the Hendon Mob into second place
with £6,000. Steve Vladar came in third.
Event 2 was a £100 Pot Limit Hold'em game and it
was Andy Gomm you fought off the rest of the field. Andy
won £10,200 so it was a nice payday for him.
Next up was the £150 No Limit Hold'em event, which
saw 124 players enter. A deal was struck at the final table,
which meant 3 players would win £7,570 and 2 would
win £7,000. Richard Ashby claimed first place and
£7,000 while the runner-up, John Burberry, won even
more! £7,570 to be precise. Andrew Cheeseman also
won the same amount for third, as did Francis Rowan in 4th
place. 5th place and £7,000 went to Dan Samsom.
A £150 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha was next on the menu.
D Sami claimed this one, fighting off 72 other competitors,
to win £7,530. Dave Colclough, who has had a string
of runners-up finishes lately, was second with £6,340.
Ram Vaswani was back in the money again, finishing third
for £5,250
The buy-in jumped to £250 for the next event, Pot
Limit Hold'em. 110 players competed in this one. When all
was said and done, Ali Mallu was crowned the winner, netting
£17,790. S Dunnet came in second with £16,000
and Carlo Citrone was third, earning him £7,090. That
should come in handy for a few new designer shirts Carlo!
The
Main Event then took place. It was a £750 buy-in No
Limit Hold'em tournament. Fellow Irishman Mike Magee fought
off 89 other players to win this one, pocketing a cool £21,630.
(Side note: after I wrote my last newsletter I realised
I had omitted Mike from the list of players I thought could
win in Vegas. Mike is one of the finest players in the world,
and if he goes to Vegas is well in with a shout. Good luck
to you Mike, if you travel over). Mick Wernick came in second
with £14,500 and Charalambos Kleanthous came third,
winning the same amount. So obviously a deal was struck
at the final table.
The Grosvenor wrapped up their Festival with an affordable
£50 Pot Limit Hold'em game. But for some reason only
63 players showed up on the day. There must have been a
good soccer match on somewhere. Ben Khalifa won this event
and £4,350.
The Rendezvous in Brighton, Sussex Masters Results
The Sussex
Masters at the Rendezvous is underway as I write. It
started on April 14th and the final event will be played
today. Here are the results so far.
Event 1 was an inexpensive £10 No Limit Hold'em tournament
and 72 players took part. R. Ainsworth went on to take top
spot and £1,210.
April 16th saw the £50 Pot Limit Hold'em game attract
60 runners, and again it was R. Ainsworth who had a back-to-back
victory. This win netted him £3,300. It is always
very impressive to win two events in a row.
Next up we had the £50 No Limit Hold'em but this
time it was S. Osman who took the top spot, winning £4,400.
Maybe R. Ainsworth didn't turn up, and was off splashing
his previous winnings elsewhere?
46 players had a shot at the £100 Pot Limit Omaha
game. £4,220 was on offer for first place and it was
duly claimed by M. Wright.
A field of 62 entered the £100 No Limit Hold'em event.
I James went on to claim this title and £4,910.
There are still a few events to go and we will bring you
those results as they happen.
The Irish
Open Poker Festival at the Merrion Club, Dublin
Back
home in dear old Dublin, Gentleman Liam Flood and his team
staged the Irish Open. Many of the top U.K. and European
players made the journey, as it is always an enjoyable event.
Alas, due to work commitments here I could not make the
journey as I had hoped to. So I guess I will have to wait
until October, when the Winter Festival is scheduled to
take place.
First up was the €200 buy-in No Limit Hold'em game,
which went to Steve McClean. He won €20,048, with Dave
Colclough coming second with €10,024. Joe Beevers of
the Hendon Mob, and runner up to Jimmy White in this year's
Poker Million, claimed third and €5,012. Well, that
will pay his travel expenses to Vegas, thank you very much!
The €400 Pot Limit Omaha was the next event pencilled
in. 84 players took part, and it was Dave Colclough who
finally took first spot after a long run of second place
finishes this year. Well done Dave! He took home €21,740
for his efforts. Italian Francesco DiNardi was glad he took
part, as his second place finish netted him €10,870.
Dave Wood from Ireland came in third with €5,435.
The
Main Event, €1,000 No Limit Hold'em, attracted 104
runners. Now it was Joe Beever's turn to prove his class
at the green felt, for he fought off the field to win first
place and €29,000. That will pay for a few buy-ins
in Vegas at the World Series, no doubt. Fellow Irishman
Frank Callaghan was runner-up with €24,000 and Ali
Sarkeshik took third and €22,500, the players having
agreed a deal at the final table.
The Merrion wrapped things up with a €100 No Limit
Hold'em game on Sunday and 111 players fought it out. When
the dust finally settled it was Paddy O'Connor who emerged
victorious and €7,000 richer. David Herney had to settle
for second and €3,660 and Chris Papadopolis won €1,830
for his third place finish.
Upcoming Events
While all poker players' eyes will be focused on events
in Las Vegas over the coming weeks, there will not be a
lot of action here until the World Series is completed.
But for those unable to travel to Vegas, why not head north
to bonny Scotland for the Dundee May
Poker Festival , which will run from May 1st to May
6th. Six tournaments are to be contested, the highlight
being the £500 buy-in No Limit Hold'em event. As with
all tournaments, we will bring you the results, as they
happen. Good luck at the tables, if you are playing.
Until next time, take care…

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
With all of the world's top poker players focused on the
WSOP in Las Vegas at present, it is easy to overlook our
own Melbourne Championships. For those that are still building
their bankrolls or can't afford the time to visit Vegas,
The Melbourne Champ's is the place to be for some tournament
fun.
All events are under $330 to enter, some with rebuys and
some without in attempt to please all. Three satellite events
will be held throughout the week and will offer good value
for those that are looking for a cheap seat into the Australasian
Championships in January next year. I am sure that local,
Dan Farid, will be hoping to win a seat for the $200 that
he expended last year resulting in a pay check of over $10
000.
An overall points prize for the Melbourne Champs this year
will be a value added prize by Crown including airfare and
accommodation for the Grand Prix de Paris Tournament at
the Aviation Club in Paris. The prize is transferable and
qualifying tournaments are the Limit Holdem, Limit 7 Card,
Terminator Holdem & Omaha, No Limit Holdem, and the
individual section of the Teams Event.
Accommodation is booking fast at the luxurious Crown Towers
with the poker rate unchanged at $198 Sun to Thurs and 247.50
Fri & Sat (GST inclusive). All enquiries and accommodation
bookings should be forwarded to Tournament Director, Danny
McDonagh.
