Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
Newbie Cashes In
Hello again, and welcome back to Poker in America. We're
half way through 2003 and with that we have our new 2003
World Champion; recently crowned at the World Series of
Poker in Las Vegas Nevada.
When we last left off action was just getting under way
in the $10,000 buy-in Main Event. Blowing away last year's
record 631 players, a staggering 839 players dished out
the 10-large to give it their best shot at becoming The
World Champ. The diverse group was made up of players from
44 different states and 27 foreign countries. The mammoth
field created a prize pool of $7,802,700 and the winner
would take home 2.5 million dollars, the biggest purse in
all of sports.
In case you haven't heard, a newbie to the tournament world
won the Main Event. Chris Moneymaker, who was playing in
his first ever live action poker tournament, beat out all
the pros, pseudo-pros, amateurs and hopefuls to collect
the $2,500,000 and coveted gold bracelet. Chris won his
seat in an online tournament for only a $40 dollar investment.
Quite a bargain price to pay for the chance of a lifetime!
If you don't think it can happen to you, think again, www.BugsysClub.com
is currently running free-rolls for a seat in the 2004 World
Poker Open. First place in the WPO will receive a guaranteed
1 million dollars. Don't miss your chance to beat the big
guys and register to play today.
Here are your 2003 World Series of Poker Final table finishers

Incidentally, ESPN television was covering the world's

ESPN, "the leader in sports television," will
be broadcasting a 7-part series on the World Series of Poker
that will run every Tuesday night (9 pm EST) starting on
July 8th. If you've been a fan of the Travel Channel's World
Poker Tour, you won't want to miss this in July.
Because of all the World Series excitement, you may have
over looked some of last month's events. Be sure to check
out the results to The Oasis Resort Casino's classic WSOP
after Party of the Oasis
Open. There were a few long standing annual events just
wrapping up as well. We had the Bicycle Casino's ladies

The Doyle Brunson
Interview
From
Longworth to Las Vegas and 70 Years in Between:
Poker Legend Doyle Brunson Tells His Story and Shares His
Views on Life as a Gambler
(Part I)
by Nolan Dalla
(All Rights Reserved)
Doyle Brunson is to poker what Babe Ruth was to baseball
-- a larger-than-life giant of a man who not only helped
to revolutionize and popularize the game he loved, but set
the standard for achievement and excellence by which all
other players are measured. Brunson won the World Series
of Poker twice, but is perhaps better known for his greater
contributions to the game. Twenty-five years ago, he co-wrote
what has been called the "Bible"" of poker -- "Super/System:
How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker." He also pioneered
higher virtues as one of the first respected voices in gambling
to discuss the importance of honor and trust amongst his
peers. Brunson came to personify the notion that gambling
could be a respectable profession.
Watch out for the fascinating full interview this week

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
Slovenia was the destination of the 13th
Torneo di Poker at Hit Casinos Park Hotel. This annual
tournament is proving popular with the travelling Europeans
and particularly the British, as the cash action is extremely
popular.
The
€ 100 Limit Hold'em was won by Nick Peters € 8,845.
The € 300 Pot Limit Hold'em saw some familiar faces
to Slovenia contest the final as Thomas Kremser Grego Renzo
and Andreas Krause fought out the final places. German player
Andreas Krause however prevailed and won € 6,750.
Gianfranco
Cantagalli from Italy looked extremely happy to win the
€ 500 Limit 7-Card Stud from a disappointing field
of only 33 competitors. Gianfranco picked up € 6,630
with Thomas Kremser again picking up good all round player
points in 4th place.
Regular cash game player at Hit Casino Grego Renzo won
the € 300 Pot Limit Hold'em and € 10,010 and that
should keep the locals happy as Grego is one of the most
popular players in the Pot Limit Omaha cash games.
The
Main Event € 1,000 No Limit Hold'em was dominated by
the Italians and with 40 entries Sandro Mescola won a first
prize of € 15,520. This event has been won in the past
by notable players Steve Templeman and Dave Devilfish Ulliott,
but coming straight after the WSOP I'm not sure how many
big name players attended.
The final event was a round of Pot Limit Hold'em and a
round of Pot Limit Omaha and was won by Florian Bergaur
from Austria € 6,560. Once again Thomas Kremser the
former Cardroom Manager from the Concord Card Casino and
Late Night Poker supervisor made the place money and this
enabled him to win the best all round player award.
The Austrian
Masters at the Concord Card Casino is always a popular
event in the European year and with the World Heads Up Championship
starting to mature, this makes the Masters a tournament
to attend for the top Europeans.
The
World Heads Up Championship is being sponsored this year
and also televised so it is really blooming into the Championship
that the organisers had in mind. Previous winners Bruno
Fitoussi from France and Kiril Gerasimov from Russia will
be out to show the others who really is the Heads Up Champion.
It will be interesting to see how many American players
turn up this year.
The early results from Austria show that the Chinese are
there in force, as event 1 saw them placed 2nd, 3rd and
4th behind German winner Karsten Phillip, € 10,305.
Other early results are Kurt Yusuf € 100 Pot Limit
Omaha, € 9,260, Ivo Donev € 100 Limit Hold'em,
€ 8,870, and Elias Brussianos € 200 Pot Limit
Omaha, € 11,260. Full results and photos will be in
our next newsletter.
Until then good luck,
Kevin Pratt

Poker in the U.K. Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Final Update on how the British and Irish
players fared at the WSOP
In my last newsletter in May, I had covered events at the
WSOP, up to and including event 33. With only 3 events left
to run, we were still without an event winner from the U.K.
or Ireland. Were they saving the best for last?
Unfortunately not, and I have to eat some humble pie, after
repeatedly stressing my confidence that the U.K. and Irish
players would do very well this year, particularly in the
Main Event. We had no money finishers in events 34 and 35,
so it was all down to the marathon, five day, $10,000 buy-in
Main Event, and boy did our players drop like flies!
My prediction to win the event outright, Lucy Rokach, went
out on day one, as did many other of our top players. This
unfortunate trend continued on days 2, 3 & 4. Not one
of our players made the final table, which was a surprise
to many, as we had many top players in attendance. I think
we'll just write it off as a bad year and hope that in 2004,
one of our finest will bring the title back across the Atlantic.
Results from Southampton
With the World Series completed for another year, the eyes
of the world focused back on local, domestic events once
more. Back in England the action got straight under way
in June, when the Grosvenor Casino in Southampton kicked
off the South
of England Poker Festival , running from June 1st to
June 3rd. There were 3 events to be contested.
The
festival started with a £200+£20 buy-in No Limit
Hold'em event. 84 players registered, and with 52 rebuys,
we had a prize pool of £27,200. R. Stevens fought
off the 83 other players to claim the first place prize
of £12,220, defeating the always tough and dangerous
Willie Tann in their heads-up battle. Willie took home £5,450
for second place, and Lawson Edwards settled for £2,700
in third spot.
On June 2nd the £100+£10 No Limit tournament
was held. 79 players entered this event and we had a hefty
125 rebuys. That brought the prize pool up to £19,700.
R. Ainsworthy emerged as champion in this one, good to the
tune of £8,800. David Morton was runner-up with £4,000
and Kevin O'Leary came in third, pocketing £2,000.
June 3rd saw the last event being held, a £100+£10
Pot Limit Hold'em game. The prize pool stood at £18,400.
A Ballard saw off the rest of the field and took home £8,300
for first place, with Lawson Edwards back in the money again
in second place. Lawson cashed out for £3,700 this
time, with T Sambrook getting £1,800 for third.
Upcoming Events in June
The Grosvenor Group continue to provide action in June,
and as I write their Summer
Spectacular at the Grosvenor in Ramsgate has just been
completed. Please check back with us during the week when
we get the results updated.
Next up this month will be the June
Festival at Owlerton's Casino in Sheffield, from June
11th to 13th. There will be 3 events to be contested and
all start at 9:00 p.m. First is a £50 buy-in No Limit
Hold'em event on June 11th, followed by a £100 Pot
Limit Omaha event on June 12th. The final event on June
13th will be a £200 buy-in No Limit Hold'em event.
We will of course bring you the results here at www.PokerPages.com
Looking ahead to July, I have added in the schedule for
the European
Championship at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London.
The Main Event is £2,500 No Limit Hold'em played over
2 days, Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th July.
If you have any news about upcoming events or new events
in the U.K. or Ireland, or if there are any specific areas
you'd like to see covered in our bi-monthly newsletter,
please feel free to email me for consideration.
Until next time, take care

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
The weekly tournaments at Crown continue to be well supported
on both Thursday and Sunday. In particular many who were
unable to make the final five in the first heat have enjoyed
the two-heat format on Sunday afternoon. Rebuys from early
exits are permitted boosting the first prize to around $700.
Wes and Jenny Bugiera must have a permanent booking for
the Sunday event after in the money finishes for the first
two weeks of this series. A tip to others, take these guy's
out early if you hope to share in the dollars.
The Australian Poker Association (A.P.A) has set the dates
for their inaugural NSW Poker Championships for the end
of July. A new prize structure will be used that will allow
players with differing bankrolls to play in the same tournament.
Those that pay a higher entry fee will in effect play two
tournaments in one. I believe that this is an excellent
idea and should attract a lot of lower limit players that
enjoy tournaments with a $200 buy-in. Others who like to
play for higher stakes will be able to pay the extra $300
and compete against each other for this extra money.
For full details of the tournament, discount accommodation
and flights go to http://www.pokernetwork.com/00/PressRelease.cfm?Item_ID=673.
It is also expected that online satellites will be available
for this event in the near future.

e-mail me.
