Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
What Now?
Hello again and welcome back to Poker in America. Well,
summer is officially underway and many of you might be asking
yourselves, "Now that the World Series of Poker is done,
what am I supposed to do?" Let me reassure everyone looking
for some summer action that there's no shortage of great
events lined up through the summer months. Before we take
a look at what lies ahead, let's take a quick look at what's
been happening since we last met.
In this edition's tournament spotlight we look to California
and Lucky Chances Casino.
Just finishing up is the California
State Poker Championships at the Commerce Casino in
California. In the final $5,000 Buy in Main Event, Las Vegas
Pro, Chip Jet rose to the occasion over a tough field of
seasoned veterans. Chip collected a mammoth $214,700 1st
place prize. The Final Table included the likes of Kathy
Liebert (10th), Kenna James (4th), and Scotty Warbucks (2nd).
In the earlier events the winners were Javier Rosario,
Eric Antman, Stuart Krasney, Robert Turner, Ron Ryneal,
John Hoang, Barry Greenstein, Ray Sitra, Lee Salem, Michael
Lempkin, Van Phan, Lee Tang, Steve Hohn, Don King, and John
Bessent
In what's become a yearly favorite for our west coast players,
the $250,000
Battle of the Bay didn't disappoint, filling the card
room every single night. Thanks to Tournament Director Nick
Kolich and his poker crew for furnishing us the results
for this great event. Here's how things played out:
Event
#1 $200 No Limit Hold'em - 159 players - Jim Boon 1st
place and $5,487 ($31,800 Total prize pool)
Event
#2 $200 Bounty Hold'em - 100 teams - Jay Justo &
Nene Noniega 1st place and $5,500 ($20,000 Total Prize pool)
Event
#3 $200 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo - 135 players - Ted Bui 1st
place and $9,440 ($27,000 Total prize pool)
Event
#4 $200 TOC Format - 82 players - Huai Zhang 1st place
and $7,000 ($20,000 Total prize pool)
Event
#5 $200 Limit Hold'em - 154 players - Amir Davallou
1st place and $10,790 ($30,800 Total Prize pool)
Event
#6 $200 Hold'em Shootout - 100 players - George Geros
1st place and $3,125 ($20,000 Total prize pool)
Event
#7 $300 Limit Hold'em Championship - 171 players - Amir
Davallou $15,000 and 1st place ($51,300 Total prize pool)
Event
#8 $500 No Limit Hold'em Championship - 163 players
- Robbie Udayakumar 1st place and $23,500 ($81,500 Total
prize pool)
Starting up this month and playing every 2nd Saturday through
December at Casino Arizona at Salt River in Arizona is their
$1,000 buy-in Winner Take all Hold'em tournaments. In these
events only First place takes the money, win the event when
80 players play and take home $80,000 Dollars. The First
of these just finished up and 27 players battled it out.
Jose Dokner took home the $27,000 prize. It sounds like
this is going to be a great monthly event, so if you've
got the gusto, give it a shot. And if you happen to see
me at the final table, be warned, I won't be making a deal.
Just getting underway as I write up this week's report
is the Festa
al Lago Poker Tournament at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino
in Las Vegas Nevada. You know if the Bellagio is involved
it's going to be one of the big time events of the summer.
Buy-ins start at $1,000 for the preliminary events and toping
out with the $5,000 buy in Championship Hold'em event on
July 2nd. Expect huge prize pools.
Here's a quick look at the rest of the month of June:
Stars
and Stripes, June 23 to July 6 at the Bicycle Casino
in Bell Gardens, CA
Calgary
Classic, June 27 to 29 at the Cash Casino in Alberta,
Calgary
San
Francisco Open, June 28 to July 5 at Casino San Pablo
in San Pablo, CA
June
Swoon Free Roll, June 29 at the Hustler Casino in Gardena,
CA
That does it for June; to see a full list of what's coming
up in July, click

don't see on our site, please let me know by clicking my

Until next time,

The Doyle Brunson
Interview
From Longworth to Las Vegas and 70 Years
in Between:
Poker Legend Doyle Brunson Tells His Story and Shares His
Views on Life as a Gambler
(Part 2)
by Nolan Dalla
(All Rights Reserved)
Doyle Brunson is to poker what Babe Ruth was to baseball
-- a larger-than-life giant of a man who not only helped
to revolutionize and popularize the game he loved, but set
the standard for achievement and excellence by which all
other players are measured. Brunson won the World Series
of Poker twice, but is perhaps better known for his greater
contributions to the game. Twenty-five years ago, he co-wrote
what has been called the "Bible"" of poker -- "Super/System:
How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker." He also pioneered
higher virtues as one of the first respected voices in gambling
to discuss the importance of honor and trust amongst his
peers. Brunson came to personify the notion that gambling
could be a respectable profession.

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
In our last newsletter we had the early results from the
Austrian
Masters so lets start with the rest of the results from
the Concord.
The €200 No Limit Hold'em was won by Foris Atilla,
€14,390 whom I predicted a few newsletters ago was
a man to watch out for. The €200 Limit Hold'em saw
Howard 'The Magician' Plant weave his magic and scoop a
first prize of €13,460 so that will mean the cash games
will be rocking in Blackpool.
Dave
Colclough finally hit the winners enclosure in the €200
Limit Hold'em bagging €18,050 for first place. Dave
who has taken on the nickname 'Bridesmaid' for continually
coming second must be mightily relieved to rediscover the
winning habit.
Kiril
Gerasinov the former heads up champion was knocked out defending
his title in the early stages this year but made amends
by winning the last 2 events at the Masters namely the €1,500
No Limit Hold'em, €35,940, and the €500 Limit
7-Card Stud winning €12,000.
During the Masters we had the World
Heads Up Championship which saw 128 entries pay €1,000
each to play for the €60,000 first prize and the title
of World Heads Up Champion. There were a few 'Star' Americans
in the field as well including Phil Helmuth, Scotty Nguyen,
'Miami' John Cernuto and Barbara Enright.
Some key first round match ups saw Phil Helmuth beat Surinder
Sunar, Padraig Parkinson beat Mel Judah and Michael Keiner
beat Bruno Fitoussi. Round 2 saw Padraig Parkinson beat
Phil Helmuth.
When
things finally settled down and players were not still rebuying
into round 1 we had the semi finals of 'Miami' John Curnuto
who beat Salah Alsayegh and Tony Chapman who beat Ivo Donev.
'Miami' John proved that the trip from the US was worth
it for him as he took the first prize of €60,000.
There was a lot of controversy regarding the fact that
beaten players were allowed to buy back into round 1, but
I go along with the organisers in their statement that the
finals were a 32 man event and that players could try more
than once to get into the final 32. This ensured the success
of the tournament and is far better than players getting
byes in early rounds. All told I think we had a very worthy
winner in 'Miami' John.
Over in Finland we had the Finnish
Open Championships at Casino Ray with the main event
going to Jorma Airaksinen who won FM14,841 in the FM1000
buy in No Limit Hold'em. The Pot Limit Soko saw Raimo Ikonen
win FM16,238 and the Pot Limit Omaha went to JP Lehtinen,
FM12,368.
Back in Austria we have just had the Poker
Masters at Seefeld where all 3 events were €200
buy in. Limit 7-Card Stud went to Bernd Rygol, Pot Limit
Omaha went to Harald Heussieinand and the Limit Hold'em
was won by Bertram Malang.
July sees one of the big events of the year the Grand
Prix de Paris at the Aviation Club in France with the
Main Event, €10,000 No Limit Hold'em, being the start
of the 2nd year of the World Poker Tour. Expect to see many
top Europeans and Americans in the field trying to win their
share of the expected 1 million Euro prize pool.
Finally as Andrew has said in his Poker in the UK section
we are trying to interview some of the top players in the
world, so if there are any Europeans that are not British
or Irish you would like to see interviewed then please e-mail
me.
Until then good luck,
Kevin Pratt

Poker in the U.K. Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Hello again and welcome to our bi-monthly update on what's
been happening in U.K. and Ireland. With the World Series
of Poker out of the way for another year, local action this
side of the Atlantic has been on the up and up, and we have
many events to look forward to.
Results from Grosvenor Ramsgate
Since my last newsletter, which was written just as events
at the Grosvenor were finishing, we have updated our site
with the results from their Summer
Spectacular.
4 events were contested in Ramsgate. First up was the £100+£10
Pot Limit Hold'em event. 42 players contested and the
prize pool finally stood at £9,600 after re-buys and top-ups.
B Cockerell claimed 1st place and £4,320, with T Tserlingus
in 2nd with £1,920. R Dereux-Cox took 3rd and £1,920.
Only 26 players entered the £300+£30
No Limit Hold'em game. The prize pool grew to £12,600
and D Morton took this event, good for £5,000. A Koresh
came in 2nd with £3,150 and K Taylor won £1,890 for his
3rd place finish.
On Sunday, June 8th 41 players entered the £50+£5
Hold'em Freeze Out. So we had a very small prize pool
of £2,050 to fight for. T Gurden saw off the rest of the
field and won £922 in the process.
Later that same day a £50
Pot Limit Hold'em tournament was held, and a small field
of 31 entered. D Stupples won this one, pocketing £2,000.
I am not so sure why the turnout for Ramsgate's tournaments
were so small. We certainly hope they will pick up again
for future tournaments.
June Festival at Napoleons Casino, Owlerton, Sheffield
Napoleons has just recently completed their June Festival.
From the feedback we are getting, the tournaments were a
great success and very well attended. Please check back
with us during the week for all the results.
Upcoming Events for July
The 2003 European Championships at the Vic
The very eagerly anticipated European
Championships get underway at the Victoria Casino in
London in July, running from Sunday, July 13th to Saturday,
the 19th. There are tournaments
to suit all tastes and pockets, with buy-ins ranging from
£50+£5 up to £2,500+£25 for the Main Event, the 2 day European
No Limit Hold'em Championship. Following on from their disappointing
performances at the World Series in Las Vegas last month,
no doubt many of our players will be keen to make big money
in London at the Vic. Competition will be tough in the Main
Event as many of Europe's finest are expected to attend.
We will have daily results here at PokerPages so be sure
to check back, when the action gets underway.
Summer Breeze Festival at the Rendezvous Casino, Brighton
The day after the European Championships are completed,
those who are still craving more action can head down the
coast to sunny Brighton, for the Rendezvous' Summer
Breeze Festival. The Rendezvous has being very pro-active
in expanding their poker rooms, and doing their very best
to stage some of the UK's most fun and varied tournaments,
again to suit all pockets. For the Summer Breeze Festival,
players can buy-in from as little as £25+2 for the Super
Satellite for the Main Event, up to £250+£20 for the Main
Event itself. A total of 11 tournaments are on offer, so
please show your approval for the Rendezvous' commitment
to poker in the UK, and make the trip to Brighton if you
can. We wish Deborah and the team there every success.
Midlands Meltdown at the Grosvenor Casino Walsall
July will finish off with action at the Grosvenor Wallsall.
We are still awaiting the final schedule of events for the
tournaments, which will run from July 23rd to July 27th.
We will certainly have them before they get underway, and
I expect to have all the details by the time our next newsletter
goes out in early July, if not sooner.
Ideas for Future Newsletters
I am considering doing some profiles and hopefully interviews
of some of the U.K. and Ireland's most famous players, similar
to the one Nolan Dalla did with poker legend Doyle Brunson
in the USA. If you haven't read that interview, be sure
to do so, as it is a fascinating insight into the way Doyle
acquired his poker skills, and the inherent dangers he encountered
back then as a 'road gambler'. It also gives a great insight
into the mind and beliefs of this phenomenal poker player.
The interview is in two parts. Part
1 and Part
2
So if there is a specific U.K. or Irish player you'd like
to see featured, please email me. While I will not be able
to accommodate every request, I will do my best to profile
or interview the most popular requests. Also, if you have
any other suggestions for articles or news on the poker
scene in the U.K. or Ireland, that you would like to see
at PokerPages, please email me for consideration.
Until next time, take care...

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
Poker players on the East Coast and across the Tasman are
all focused on the newest Poker Event to hit this part of
the world, The New South Wales Poker Championship. The event
is being run by some of Australia's best known Poker players,
including WSOP bracelet holder Gary Benson. Keith "Bendigo"
Sloan will be acting as Tournament Director and having worked
with him on many occasions I am sure that the tournament
will be well run.
Beginning on July 30th, the first low limit tournament
will commence at 9pm to accommodate interstate visitors.
The late start should ensure that as many players will be
able to play this tournament as possible. The following
three days will also have small buy-ins. The main event
held on Sunday August 3rd with a buy in of $1100 is sure
to attract a first class field. Many players would love
to be The Inaugural NSW Poker Champion and I am sure will
make the main event a tough assignment for anyone.
Schedule:
Day 1 Wednesday July 30th 9PM $225 Limit Hold'em Freezeout
Day 2 Thursday July 31st 8PM $225 Limit Omaha Freezeout
Day 3 Friday August 1st Noon $225 No Limit Hold'em Freezeout
Day 4 Saturday August 2nd Noon $225 No Limit Hold'em semi
shoot-out top 2 from each table to final
Day 5 Sunday August 3rd Noon $1,100 No Limit Hold'em Freezeout
As an added bonus for this event Edna Dalton has offered
free accommodation at Bellagio for the winner of the main
event. Both Edna and Doug Dalton were very supportive when
opening Australia's largest Poker Room in Melbourne five
years ago and have continued to support Poker in this part
of the world. Having stayed at Bellagio I would recommend
it to any Poker player travelling to Vegas. A great poker
room with excellent service and facilities.
Following this event, The
Victorian Poker Championship is scheduled at Crown Casino
for 30th August. The Championship will run for a week with
a wide range of tournaments and will include several Super
Satellites for the 2004 Main Event. This Championship has
always been popular and I am sure will again be well supported.
For any other questions about Poker in Australia please
e-mail me.
