Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages
writes about Poker in America
Hello again everyone and welcome back to Poker In America.
Summer is in full swing and the poker action has been hotter
than ever. On the tournament circuit, we've just finished
up some annual favorites as well as a new event at the Bellagio
The Bellagio is quickly becoming the premier place to play
poker in Vegas. With the recent addition of the Festa
al Lago Poker Tournament that has just finished, they're
proving that, not only can they lead the way in cash games,
but they are now providing some excellent poker tournaments
as well that are proving to be must play events for the
Las Vegas Pros. Festa al Lago, a 10-day event featured big
buy-ins and even bigger prize pools. If that wouldn't get
the players to the tables, perhaps the two $25,000 seats
in to the World Poker Tour Championship would perk their
interest. Let's take a look how this event played out.
Event
#1 $1,000 Buy in No limit Hold'em - 203 Players - Mark
Seif, 1st Place and $93,944 (Includes entry into $25,300
World Poker Tour). Poker Pages have just profiled Mark
Seif who is proving to be one of the worlds best tournament
players
Event
#2 $1,000 Buy in Limit Omaha Hi/Lo - 96 players - 1998
WSOP Champion Scotty Nguyen, 1st Place and $37,248. Scotty
who had a relatively quiet WSOP bounced back with 2 victories
at the Bellagio in the space of 5 days.
Event
#3 $1,000 Buy in Limit Hold'em - 143 Players - Yakoub
Bellawala, 1st place and $55,484. Yakoub has played in the
WSOP main event before but has never featured in any other
tournament results we have so congratulations on your first
major tournament win.
Event
#4 $1,000 Buy in Limit 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo - 78 Players
- Kimberly Bye, 1st Place and $30,264 Kimberly is one of
the top female players in the world and regularly features
in some of the major events. If you read this newsletter
Kimberly we would appreciate a photo of you to put in our
womans section of PokerPages.
Event
#5 $1,000 Buy in Pot Limit Hold'em - 120 players - TJ
Cloutier, 1st place and $46,560. TJ does it again with yet
another win in a major event.
Event
#6 $1,000 Buy in Limit 7-Card Stud - 84 players - Scotty
Nguyen, and $32,592. This was Scotty's 2nd win of the tournament,
giving him a total of almost $70,000
Event
#7 $1,500 Buy in No Limit Hold'em - 191 players - 2001
Player of the year John Juanda, 1st Place and $126,340 John
has been in great form of late and adds yet another title
to his collection. In fact John is always in form it seems
and these Bellagio events are certainly bringing the best
players to the front.
Event
#8 $1,500 Buy in Pot Limit Omaha - 59 players - Vinny
Vinh, 1st Place and $38,630. Vinny's last big win came at
the Commerce back at the October 2002 where he won $63,000
in the Limit Hold'em at the Holiday Bonus Tournament.
Event
#9 $500 Buy-in Super Satellite No Limit Hold'em - 169
players - John Narizny 1st place and $5,300 (Includes $5,150
entry into Championship event) 15 others would also gain
entry into the main event.
Event
#10 $5,000 Championship No Limit Hold'em - 137 players -
Curt Kohlberg, First place and $280,960 plus $25,300 entry
into World Poker Tour Championship. Curt comes up with another
major victory and when this man is in the final he usually
makes it count. Foxwoods and the World Poker Finals is where
we usually see Curt collecting the money as he has previously
won the 7-Card Stud in 2002 and the Main Event in 2000 where
he won $165,000.
Turning our attention to the West Coast, we have two annual
favorites that have just concluded. The San
Francisco Open at Casino San Pablo and at the Bicycle
Casino in Los Angeles Stars
and Stripes
The
Main
Event at the Bike saw David 'The Dragon' Pham collect
$25,795 in the $100 No Limit Hold'em whilst over in San
Francisco Chad Burum picked up the biggest win in the $100
Limit Hold'em taking home $8,420.
Looking ahead to the rest of the month of July, things
look to stay busy. Get your plane tickets and head out to
these great events:
Lake Elsinore Resort, July 11 to 13 - Tournament
Value
Casino Arizona at Salt River, July 12 - $1000

If that doesn't keep you busy for the rest of the month,
I don't know what will.
Until next time, may all your houses be full,
Tim Kopp

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
The Grand
Prix de Paris has just started at the Aviation Club
in France and this is one of the premier events in the European
year especially as it now features the only European World
Poker Tour Event.
The
main tournament in the first few days has been the €2,000
Omaha Cup, which saw 60 entries and a prizepool of €165,000.
Dave Colclough from the UK currently ranked No.1 in Europe
in all games proved that he has shaken off the 2nd place
nickname of Bridesmaid by winning the first prize of €66,000
from Frenchman Bernard Damron.
In
the €1,000 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, Fabrice Soulier who was
winning everything in 2001 and then went quiet last year
finally came back to the winners enclosure and took home
€14,510. I don't know if Fabrice took a year out or
was on a bad run but this great player will surely win plenty
more events this year and I wouldn't bet against him winning
the Main Event, the €10,000 Grand Prix de Paris with
the expected prizepool of €1,000.000.
Marc
Atlani won the €500 Round of Each Hold'em/Omaha, picking
up €13,200 and Gerrard Duguet Grasser won the €50
Dealers Choice and €11,390.
I will cover the rest of the results including the €10,000
Main Event, which is being televised, in our next newsletter.
Next up in Europe is the popular Worthsee
Trophy in Veldon Austria with the Main Event being the
€15,000 No Limit Hold'em on the 18th July. The Trophy
however is for the 7-Card Stud final on the 19th which is
for players who have qualified throughout the week. Expect
to see a big prizepool for the Stud event.
Until next time good luck at the tables,
Kevin Pratt

Poker in the U.K. Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Hello again and welcome to our bi-monthly update on what's
been happening and about to happen in the U.K. and Ireland.
July promises to be an exciting month in the UK, with the
highlight being the 2003
European Championships at the Vic in London.
Results from Napoleon's Casino in Owlerton
Craig Wicks, Cardroom manager at Napoleon's sent us a very
nice and sincere email apologising for the delay in sending
the results of their recent June Festival out. They were
experiencing serious technical problems with their email
systems, but thankfully it has all been resolved now. So
we are pleased to bring you the results of their recent
June
Festival, and my thanks to Craig for sending them to
us.
First event was the £50 buy-in No Limit Hold'em game.
98 players signed up and we had a hefty total of 248 re-buys
and add-ons, bringing the prize pool to £17,200. It
was Almeeri who saw of the rest of the field to claim first
place and a nice £6,510. Second place went to regular
tournament player Osman Mustanoglu who pocketed £3,395,
with Ben Veasafrani claiming third and $2,035.
Next up, Napoleon's offered a £100 buy-in Pot Limit
Omaha game. 69 players registered and with 94 re-buys, the
prize pool stood at £19,000. Victory in this event
went to John Laurence, who took home £7,500. Sam Manavi
came in second, winning £3,750 and D Makawana took
third spot, good for £2,250. Osman Mustanoglu was
in a money finish again, ending in fourth spot with £1,500.
The third and final event of Owlerton's June Festival was
a £200 buy-in Pot Limit Hold'em game. This attracted
96 players, and we had 91 re-buys. So a share in £37,400
was up for grabs. After hours of movement of chips, it was
regular tournament player M Latif who emerged victorious
to claim the £14,750 first place prize. A Hutchinson
had to settle for second place and £7,375, while a
familiar face at the final tables ended up in third. It
was Osman Mustanoglu again, and his third place finish pocketed
him £4,425. To make the final table in three consecutive
events is very impressive, so well played Osman.
Our congratulations go to all the winners at Napoleon's.
Craig has just informed us that their next dates will be
the September
Festival
Upcoming Events for July
The 2003 European Championships at the Vic
The very eagerly anticipated European
Championships get underway at the Victoria Casino in
London in July, running from Sunday, July 13th to Saturday,
the 19th. There are tournaments to suit all tastes and pockets,
with buy-ins ranging from £50+£5 up to £2,500+£25 for the
Main Event, the 2 day European No Limit Hold'em Championship.
Following on from their disappointing performances at the
World Series in Las Vegas last month, no doubt many of our
players will be keen to make big money in London at the
Vic. Competition will be tough in the Main Event as many
of Europe's finest are expected to attend. We will have
daily results here at PokerPages so be sure to check back,
when the action gets underway.
Summer Breeze Festival at the Rendezvous Casino, Brighton
The day after the European Championships are completed,
those who are still craving more action can head down the
coast to sunny Brighton, for the Rendezvous'
Summer Breeze Festival, which will run from July 20th
to 27th inclusive. The Rendezvous has being very pro-active
in expanding their poker rooms, and doing their very best
to stage some of the UK's most fun and varied tournaments,
again to suit all pockets. For the Summer Breeze Festival,
players can buy-in from as little as £25+2 for the Super
Satellite for the Main Event, up to £250+£20 for the Main
Event itself. A total of 11 tournaments are on offer, so
please show your approval for the Rendezvous' commitment
to poker in the UK, and make the trip to Brighton if you
can. We wish Deborah and the team there every success.
Midlands Meltdown at the Grosvenor Casino Walsall.
July will finish off with action at the Grosvenor Wallsall.
My thanks to Sadia Kaiser at the Grosvenor Group for getting
us the schedule for the Meltdown,
which will run from July 23rd to 27th inclusive. The Grosvenor
is also offering a nice selection of games, with buy-ins
set at £100+£10, £200+£20, £250+£25 and £1,000+£25 for the
main event, the 2 day No Limit Hold'em Freezeout. This will
start on Saturday, July 26th at 8:15 p.m., and resume on
Sunday, 27th at 3:00 p.m. There will be a 150 player maximum
for most events. We wish the Grosvenor Walsall every success
with the Midlands Meltdown.
We will of course bring you all the results here at www.pokerpages.com,
as we know many of our readers, if not playing yourselves,
will have family or friends at the tables. So be sure to
check back with us regularly.
Interviews in Future Newsletters
In our next newsletter I hope to feature an interview with
one of the U.K and Ireland's top poker players, so watch
this space. If there is a specific U.K. or Irish player
you'd like to see featured, please email me. Until next
time, take care
.

Poker Down Under
Reported by David
Parlor
The Inaugural New South Wales Poker Championship is gaining
momentum every day. Due to popular demand a new venue has
been chosen that will cater for a larger number of entrants.
The new venue is The Abbey, 160 Bridge Rd. Glebe and will
cater for up to seventy players per tournament.
Following Edna and Doug Dalton's offer of free accommodation
at Bellagio for the winner of the main event in Sydney,
one of the Pioneers of Australian Poker has made an offer
that can only make The New South Wales Championship even
more inviting.
The offer is from John Kobek who has helped shape Australian
Poker over many years. Although JK now resides in Moscow,
as Poker Manager of Korona Casino he often contributes to
Australian Poker through online message boards, offering
advice and sharing his wealth of experience. Being a New
South Welshman, JK wanted to contribute something to this
new event and has kindly offered one week's meals and accommodation
in Moscow. Having visited this great city in 2000, I found
Korona to be a comfortable place to play and enjoyed JK's
great hospitality. Full details of how to claim this prize
will be available at the Championship.
Small buy-in tournaments are continuing at Crown Casino
every Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon, leading up
to the Victorian
Poker Championship at the end of August. These tournaments
are proving very popular amongst the Melbourne locals, some
of who are sure to feature in the larger events next month.
Learn to Play sessions are currently being conducted at
Crown Casino from midday near the food court entry and will
continue until the 13th July. If you haven't tried "bricks
and mortar" Holdem or you have friends and family that
would like to learn this great game, this is the perfect
opportunity. New players that participate in the Learn to
Play program will be invited to attend a small buy-in, beginner's
only tournament later in the year.
For any other questions about Poker in Australia please
e-mail me.
