Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages
writes about Poker in America
Hello again and welcome back to poker in America. As the
mercury begins to rise and we head into the dog days of
the summer, the poker action out west has been just as hot.
This month we'll take a look at 2 annual favorites for the
locals in Vegas and California respectively. The
Orleans Open and Grand
Slam of Poker have kept people busy as well has padded
the pockets of a lucky (and of course, skillful) players.
First we head out to Vegas and The Orleans Casino for their
annual treat, the Orleans
Open. When the results started rolling in about a week
ago, I though that there might have been some mistakes on
the official results, the prize pools were huge for a tournament
that sells itself as a budget buy in-event. As soon as I
caught wind of the numbers that were showing up, it all
made sense. Scores of folks from all over the country were
heading to the Orleans for some top-notch tournament action.
We're about half way through The Open, so let's take a
look at how it's played out so far:
The
first event, Event
#1 Limit Hold 'em ($125 buy-in), Drew a record 1166
players. The prize pool swelled to over $145,000. Leave
it to a pro though, Englishman Peter Costa would tiptoe
his way though the huge field and take home the $40,715
first place prize. Also congratulations to PokerSchoolOnline
member Jerry Mellinger (PayShints) for taking 3rd spot worth
$11,310 proving once again that the school members can compete
with the best.
In Event
#2, Omaha Hi/Lo ($125 buy-in), there was almost half
of the amount of players, but 640 players is nothing too
shabby. Neither was the $80,000 prize pool. Jack "JJ" Jones
from Las Vegas, NV took first and the $22,350 prize.
Event
#3 7 Card Stud ($125 buy-in), aspiring pro Carl Bleeker
outlasted 432 other players to take home a crisp $13,200.
On to Event
#4 and No Limit Hold'em ($230 buy-in). Another huge
field as expected signed in for America's favorite tournament
event. 502 players helped build a prize pool of almost $200,000.
Jake Warren from Louisiana outlasted the rest and took the
$57,760 first place prize.
Drawing more players the next day, Event
#5, Limit Hold'em ($230 buy-in) was the order of the
day. 536 players duked it out all day for a piece of the
$107,200 prize pool. In the end however it was Kelly Siah
who took 1st place and $37,430.
The following day was The Seniors Charity No Limit Hold'em,
Event
#6 ($230 buy-in). 177 of poker's golden oldies settled
in. With 561 rebuys, they were able make the prize pool
a respectable $35,400. Jack Duncan of Las Vegas took home
the $12,705 first place prize.
Moving along to Event
#7 we had Omaha Hi/Lo ($230 buy-in). Marie Gabert of
Carson City, NV walked over the other 282 players to collect
herself a happy $33,035 and first place.
That brings us to about the halfway point. As you can see
it's anybody's game at the Orleans, there's still time left
so get your self a seat.
Off to California and Larry Flint's Hustler Casino for
their Grand
Slam of Poker. Players wanting to avoid the crowds at
the Orleans may have wanted to go to the Hustler for games
with slightly larger buy-ins and huge guaranteed prize pools.
There hasn't been the huge turn out at the Grand Slam, but
that hasn't stopped the action. Prize pools have started
to creep towards 1 million dollars already and we're only
halfway through. Here's how it looks so far:
Event
#1: $225 Buy-in Limit Hold 'Em. 229 players + 424 re-buys,
$109,600 prize pool. Chris Grigorian (Los Angeles Ca) $41,090
and 1st place.
Event
#2: $225 Buy-In No Limit Hold 'Em. 228 players + 142
re-buys, $74,000 Prize Pool. Kenna James (Anaheim, Ca) $28,120
and 1st place.
Event
#3: $225 Buy-In Omaha Hi/Lo. 123 Players, $25,000 Prize
Pool. David Levi, 1st place and $9,520.
Event
#4: $225 Buy-In Pot Limit Hold 'Em. 126 players + 92
re-buys, $43,600 Prize Pool. Frank Rite (Orange County,
CA), 1st place and $16,505.
Event
#5: $225 Buy-In Limit Hold 'Em. 182 Players, $36,400
Prize Pool. Chris Grigorian (Los Angeles, CA) 1st place
and $13,775. This was Chris's 2nd Win of the week.
Event
#6: $225 Buy-In 7-Card Stud hi/lo. 104 Players, $25,000
Prize pool. Robert Turner (Downey, CA) 1st Place and $9,750
Event
#7: $225 Buy-In Limit Hold 'Em. 204 players + 316 re-buys,
$104,000 Prize pool. Philip Luong $39,520 and first place.
Event
#8: $225 Buy-In No Limit Hold 'Em. 200 players + 138
re-buys, $67,600 prize pool. Jeff Chui (El Cajon, CA) 1st
place and $25,690.
Next month we'll be looking at these two events to see who
wins the championship events from those two tournaments.

Poker In Europe Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
Since our last newsletter the only tournament in Europe
has been the Grand
Prix de Paris World Poker Tour Event so I will devote
this newsletter to coverage of the only WPT event this side
of the Atlantic.
The Aviation Club ran satellites all week to help players
gain entry into the prestigious event which would cost €10,000
to enter and is by far the most expensive event to enter
in Europe, barring the Poker Million.
In the end 96 players entered and produced a prize pool
of €919,000 making it the biggest event the Aviation
has staged.
25% of the field came from the USA and what a list of stars
we had. Some of the best players in the world including,
Phil Ivey, Erik Seidel, Howard Lederer, Daniel Negreanu,
Scotty Nguyen, Men The Master, Ted Forrest, Barry Greenstein,
Chip Jett, Jason Lester and current reining WPT champion
Alan Goehring all made the journey from the States and that
must have been pleasing for the Aviation management.
Top Americans turn up in Paris
Day
1 saw some great confrontations with none better than
the €178,000 decision that Jan Boubli, one of the top
French players, made against leading American Howard Lederer.
With blinds at only 25/50 Howard made it 150 to go and was
re-raised by Jan to 400, Howard raised to 1,500 and Jan
re-raised again to 4,000. Howard then tried to set Jan all
in for 2,700 more but after a long ponder Jan decided his
kings were no good and passed. What a lay down this proved
as Howard Lederer indeed had the Aces and Jan Boubli managed
to stay alive and eventually finish second in the tournament,
making the decision worth €178,000.
At the end of Day
1, 63 players remained out of the field of 96 and it
was none other than current WPT champion Alan Goehring who
led the field with 35,425 chips followed closely by two
of the top French players David Benyamine and Pascal Perrault.
Day
2 saw the field cut to 18 players and it was Daniel
Negreanu a teacher at PokerSchoolOnline who came from nowhere
to take the chip lead on 170,700, followed by Vic player
Jamie Posner, who seems to excel at the major events, and
Erick Lindgren from USA. Alan Goehring had been eliminated
at this stage but other top players still in with a shout
were Scotty Nguyen, Jeff Lisandro and Phil Ivey.
In another Day
2 amazing hand Daniel Negreanu scooped a massive pot
when with 20 players left and a flop of Q-7-4-6-Q he held
two sixes for a full house beating trip queens and a full
house of fours over queens.
Day
3 saw the players play down to the final 6 and once
again the overnight chip leader failed to make it through
the following day. Daniel Negreanu somehow managed to bust
out in 7th place one short of the televised stage when his
2 pair was trounced on the river by David Benyamine's trips.
This was a bad beat for Daniel but we will have to wait
and read his thoughts on how he played the hand later.
So the Final
Table line up looked as follows:
David Benyamine France 366.600 chips
Jan Boubli France 233,100 chips
Erick Lindgren USA 123,700 chips
Jamie Posner GB 123,600 chips
George Paravoliasakis Greece 77,500 chips
Lee Salem USA 39,900 chips.
I
don't have much final table details as things are a bit
secretive being that it was televised for showing later
in the year but I can tell you the top 3 places were 3rd
George Paravoliasakis 'George The Greek' as he is known
in the high stakes cash games, 2nd Jan Boubli and first
was David Benyamine who picked up €357.200 plus a $25,000
seat in the WPT final next year.
Many thanks to Isabelle Mercier for providing us with full
and prompt details for the tournament and also for providing
us with the schedule for the next major festival at the
Aviation the Autumn
Tournament

Poker in the U.K. Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Hello again. Time for an update on what has been happening
in the UK & Ireland. All attention has been on the 2003
European Championships at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino
in London, so here are the results.
The 2003
European Championships at the Vic
First up was the £200+£20 Pot
Limit Hold'em event. 214 players took part, competing
for the £76,800 prize pool. M Farooq won the event
outright, pocketing a nice £29,184. P Fox came in
second, good for £15,360 with P Eide in third and
£8,448 richer.
Next
event was the £300+£25 Pot
Limit Omaha , which attracted 115 runners. Seasoned
tournament player and tough competitor Mick Cook won this
one, earning a tidy £20,178. Ian Greer had to settle
for second and £10,620, with Jeff Duval picking up
£5,841 for his third place finish.
The £500+£25 Pot
Limit 7-Card Stud event drew 95 entrants. Bruce "Elvis"
Atkinson claimed this one and the £17,860 first place
prize, fighting off the always dangerous Mike Magee, who
had to settle for second. Mike picked up £9,870. Mensky
came in third, good for £6,110.
190
players entered the £750+£25 No
Limit Hold'em tournament, and there was a prize pool
of £142,500 to fight for. At the end of this tough
tournament, it was Robin Keston who came out on top, earning
himself a cool £51,490. J. Bloor was runner-up, collecting
£28,455, with R.G. Brown in third with £17,615.
The
climax of events at the Vic was the £2,500+£25 European
No Limit Hold'em Championship and 150 players competed.
This one created a nice prize pool of £375,000. After all
the betting, bluffing, re-bluffing, raising and all-in moves
were done and dusted, it was Torsten Iversen who emerged
as champion, netting £149,984 for his efforts. Not bad at
all! Ali Mallu won £78,100 for coming in second and Tristan
McDonald was third, having to settle for a mere £41,002.
Our congratulations go to all the winners and our thanks
to the Grosvenor Group for getting us the results in a timely
manner.
Tina and Mark would like to thank all the management and
Staff at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino for making them most
welcome, and putting on a wonderful week of events. It was
great to meet all the players that we have not seen for
a few years and had a really fantastic time catching up
with poker stories, although we have heard enough bad beats
to last a lifetime....lol.
Mark took some photos of the top 15 players in the main
event, and we hope to put more of the European poker players
faces on PokerPages in the coming months, so don't be shy
if you want to send us your photo to go into our new gallery,
send it to Kevin@PokerPages.com.

Poker Down Under
Reported by David
Parlor
Tournaments continue at Crown Casino on Thursday evening
and Sunday afternoon. Last Thursday's No limit Holdem tournament
attracted 54 players and saw Wes Bugiera collect over $1000.
Wes had a lucky escape when short on chips against Ken Eastwood,
Ken showed Q9 and Wes Q8 all in. The flop came down without
helping either hand followed by a 4 and finally a 9. As
Wes stood up ready to leave in 2nd place, it was noticed
that the board was entirely hearts, a split pot for both
players. About six hands later Wes had turned the tables
on Ken relegating Ken to second and about $600. I guess
this shows that even experienced players can misread hands
at times.
The cash tournaments on Sunday are also proving popular.
Every second Sunday, satellites are run for The
Australasian Championship in January next year. For
a small entry fee of $55, players get the opportunity to
play for a share of a prizepool that I believe will be in
the vicinity of $2 million. While many players will not
part with $10 000 to enter a tournament, $55 can give all
a chance to play amongst the worlds best.
The New South Wales Championship continues to grow with
100 players now registered as entrants. A new venue has
been chosen to accommodate the greater than expected demand
for this event. I believe that their unique prize structure
and entry fee options have contributed to the interest that
has been generated.
Casino Canberra has expressed interest of running a Dealers
Tournament in November although details have not been finalised.
Sydney staff are sure to attend in numbers and looking to
take revenge on the Crown staff who performed well in the
last Inter Casino event in Christchurch, NZ. Details of
dates, buy-ins etc will be in the newsletter as soon as
they become available.
For any other questions about Poker in Australia please
e-mail me.
