Everything's coming up Grigorian
Hello again everybody and welcome back to Poker in America.
When we last met we were looking at 2 of the summer's most
awaited events, The Hustler Casino's Grand
Slam of Poker, and The
Orleans Open at the Orleans Casino in Las Vegas. Both
of these events have just wrapped up and there's a whole
bunch of other things we need to cover, so lets get right
to it, shall we.
First stop, L.A. and Larry Flint's Hustler Casino. Very
quietly, Chris Grigorian is becoming one of the biggest
success stories on this year's Tournament trail. In the
Grand Slam alone, Grigorian won 4 of the 20 events and made
several final tables to net over $100,000 in winnings. Even
more impressive Chris took the money in 4 different games;
Hold'em (limit and no limit), 7-Card Stud, and Omaha. We'll
have to keep an eye on Chris; he may just be making a run
at the 2003 player of the year. If poker is merely luck,
Chris Grigorian must be the luckiest Man in California.
Lets pick up The Grand Slam where we left off and see how
Chris and the other players faired throughout the rest of
the event. We pick up action in event 10:

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages
writes about Poker in Europe
There has been no tournament action in Europe since the
last newsletter so I thought I would take the opportunity
to look forward to some future events in the European calendar.
August 27th to 30th sees the Bodensee
Poker Championship in Bregenz, Austria. There are 5
tournaments ranging from €200 right up to €1,000 and this
pretty Austrian town is the perfect place to have a short
break, with a bit of poker action as well, so why not book
up and give the wife a weekend treat?
September has 3 major tournaments namely the Barcelona
Open in Spain, the Autumn Tournament at the Aviation in
France, and The Austrian Classics at the Concord Card Casino
in Austria.
The
Barcelona Open 3rd to 7th September is relatively new
to the poker scene but I am sure the event will be well
attended at least by the British. There are 5 tournaments
with buy ins of €200 up to €1,000. There is one Pot Limit
Omaha event with the rest being Hold'em.
The
Autumn Tournament at Paris lasts from September 9th
to 21st with the 2 main events being €1,000 Pot Limit Omaha
on the 18th and €2,000 No Limit Hold'em on the 20th.
I have just got the schedule for the Austrian Classics
which runs from 22nd September to the 30th September. The
tournaments range from €100 to €1,000 for the
main event No Limit Hold'em on the 28th. Please check out
the full schedule as many of you will not have seen it yet.
The
big event of October is the Poker
EM 2003 1st to 4th.which is now into its 15th year.
The Championship, which started with a modest 80 contestants
in 1989, has developed over the years into a super event
for poker players from all over the world. This European
Poker Championship has become by far the biggest 7-Card
Stud tournament in the world and for a modest €200 layout
you could well be the champion. Last years prize pool was
€607,000. Watch out for Peter Hajszan as he seems quite
a specialist at this tournament finishing second in 2001
and 2002 and he may just go one better this year. There
are 3 rounds of qualifying with a super final on the 4th
October.
November
sees the always popular Masterclassics of Poker at Holland
Casino, Amsterdam, Holland between the 2nd and 8th. The
Main Event here will be the Lido which starts usually on
the Wednesday and last year had a €3,000 buy in. The full
schedule has not been published yet but I'm sure it will
be announced soon as the staff are very proficient in the
running of this festival.
Good luck wherever you choose to play

Poker in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey of
the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
I hope you are all enjoying the fine summer weather this
August, getting to the beach during the day and to the tables
at night. Before I go on to tell you about this month's
events, let's catch up on all the action and results from
late July.
Results from Brighton are in
The
Rendezvous in Brighton staged their Summer
Breeze Festival from July 20th to the 27th. After a
few small appetiser tournaments the action went mainstream
on July 23rd with the £50 buy-in No Limit Hold'em game.
98 signed up and after all the re-buys and add-ons the prize
pool grew to £13,300. H Leff overcame the rest of the pack
in picking up first spot and £5,320. D Barlow took second
and £2,660 and J Duval wound up third with £1,660.
July 24th saw the £100 buy-in mixed Pot Limit Omaha/Hold'em,
which was bound to test the overall skills of the competitors.
80 hopefuls signed up but it was D Howorth who saw off the
rest of the field, winning £7,240 of the £18,100 prize pool
in the process. £3,620 went to D Vinson in second place,
and £2,265 going to J Grech in third.
Next day saw the £100 buy-in No Limit Hold'em tournament.
85 players took a shot at this one. Victory and £8,240 went
to Paul Parker. JJ Fox took home £4,120 for his second place
finish, with J Katz earning £2,470 in third place.
 The
highlight of the Summer Breeze Festival was the £250 buy-in,
2 Day No Limit Hold'em tournament that started July 26th,
with the final played out on July 27th. 93 players registered
and we had a cool £45,000 to fight for. S Robson had the
honour of taking first in this one, winning a sweet £17,400.
L Porter had to settle for second and £8,950 with P Fox
getting £5,370 for his third place finish.
Our congratulations go to all the winners at Brighton,
and our thanks to Deborah Rogers, Simon Tomsett and Sinead
Creeley for getting us the results and photos.
Players
at the Rendezvous were also treated to the participation
of snooker professional Jimmy White, winner of this year's
Poker Million, and who also does sterling work for the Children
in Need charity. For those of you who don't know, Jimmy
has also released a single titled "Minted" which he hopes
will go to number one in the charts, all in aid of Children
in Need. So please lend your support and purchase a copy
of Jimmy's single. While he admits to not being the greatest
singer in the world, it is for a fantastic cause and we
admire Jimmy for his efforts. We also wish him every success
at the other green tables - namely the snooker ones - and
hope he wins the big one that has evaded him throughout
his career. We look forward to covering the Rendezvous'
October Harbour Lights Festival later in the year. We will
bring you the schedule for that Festival in the coming weeks,
so please check back with us.
Simon Tomsett &
Jimmy White
Also in are the results from Walsall
Running simultaneously with events at Brighton was the
Midlands
Meltdown at the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall. There were
4 key tournaments on offer so without further ado, here's
how they panned out.
First
up was the £100 buy-in Pot Limit Hold'em event, which attracted
a healthy 145 runners. With 205 re-buys the prize pool stood
at £45,000. It was the female poker player I most admire
this side of the Atlantic, Lucy Rokach , who claimed this
one. The former schoolteacher scooped a nice £15,300 for
her efforts. J Reid won £6,800 in second place, with M McKinlay
picking up £3,400 in third.
Next up was the mixed Pot Limit Hold'em/Omaha (round of
each) event and we had 83 runners. M Poutzouris took this
one, good for £11,760 of the £34,400 prize pool. Runner-up
M Al-Amiry pocketed £7,760 and P Davis got £6,370 for third.
July 25th saw the £250 buy-in, 2 Day Pot Limit Hold'em.
99 players gave us a £44,750 prize pool. Victory and top
spot went to D Foulds who took £14,590. £14,000 was awarded
to P Peters in second so the players obviously made a deal
when heads-up. The always dangerous Paul Testud of France
took third and £4,470.
The
Main Event in Walsall was the £1,000 buy-in 2 Day No
Limit Hold'em Freezeout , which attracted a total of 74
runners and £74,000 in prize money. After a tough 2 days
it was C Singh and J Kourni who got heads-up and agreed
a deal. They both split the remaining prize money 50/50,
taking £23,490 each and just playing out for the title,
which C Singh claimed. £9,900 went to a third place finisher
who wished to remain anonymous.
The Grosvenor Group of Casinos has asked us to remind you
all about their exciting Grosvenor Blue Square Grand Prix.
The estimated prize pool is £250,000. Seven of their card
rooms will be holding Qualifiers for the final, which is
to be held in Walsall on September 6th and 7th. It is the
second time they have run a Grand Prix and it follows on
from the great success of last year's. There are a number
of Qualifiers that you can enter this month, to qualify
for the final in September. The top 15% of players in each
Qualifier will win a seat for the final, so this is a great
opportunity to win big money for only £100 plus a £10 registration
fee. Re-buys are also permitted for the first 75 minutes
and during the last 3 hands. Dates and venues are for this
month's Qualifiers at the following Grosvenor casinos are:
- Blackpool (ph: Tel: +44 (0) 1253 341 222): August 16th
& 26th (also September 2nd)
- Luton (ph: +44 (0) 1582 414 166): August 7th, 21st &
28th (also September 4th)
- Ramsgate (ph: +44 (0) 1843 585 678): August 19th & 26th
(also September 2nd)
- Salford (ph: +44 (0) 161 839 0467): August 20th & 27th
(also September 3rd)
- Southampton (ph: +44 (0) 2380 334 333): August 14th
& 21st (also September 4th)
- London Victoria (ph: +44 (0) 207 262 7777): August 3rd,
10th, 18th, 24th & 31st (also September 1st)
- Walsall (ph: +44 (0) 1922 645 222): August 5th, 12th,
19th & 26th (also September 4th & 5th)
You should check with each respective casino beforehand
to make sure there have been no changes to the schedules
and/or start times.
We wish the Grosvenor Group every success with the Blue
Square Grand Prix.
Upcoming events in August
The
Scottish Open has just kicked off this week at the Gala
Casino in Dundee, Scotland and will run until August 11th.
There are games to suit all tastes and pockets, with buy-ins
ranging from £50 to £500 (+£25 fee) for the 2 Day No Limit
Hold'em Freezeout, that starts on Thursday 7th at 9:00pm.
One of the more fascinating games that will be on offer
is a £100 buy-in 6 Card Omaha event on Friday 8th at 9:00
p.m., where instead of the normal 4 hole cards, players
get dealt 6! No doubt there will be chips flying everywhere
that night. I'm not sure if I personally would have the
stomach for that game, but I'm sure some will find it a
lot of fun!
Also in August the Grosvenor Luton will stage the Grosvenor
UK Open. There are games ranging from buy-ins of £30+£3
all the way up to the Main Event - the £1000+£25 2 Day,
No Limit Hold'em Event that starts on Saturday, August 16th
at 6:00 p.m. No doubt there will be a great turnout from
all the London regulars, plus visitors alike. We wish the
team at the Grosvenor Luton every success with the Open.

Until next time, take care...

The Dead Man's Hand: A
Poker Cop Mystery
By Robert Arabella
Part 2- Calling Cards
A serial killer, "The Poker Player Slayer," has strangled five Majestic Poker Room regulars. In the dead hand of each victim is a complete poker hand, the killer's "calling cards." Talbot, "The Poker Cop," and Penelope Fallon, "Red Penny," are investigating.
Part 2 - Calling Cards
The Poker Player Slayer has made good on his threat to
murder one poker player a day. Five Majestic poker room
regulars have been strangled. Clutched in each victim's
dead hand were found the killer's "calling cards," a complete
poker hand - a Full House, "888/44"; an ace high flush,
"A/K/6/4/3"; two pair, "KK/77"; a straight to the nine,
"9/8/7/6/5"; and, finally, "AA/88," the world-famous "Dead

Poker Down Under
Reported by David
Parlor
The New South Wales Championship has reached its conclusion
with many familiar names taking the honours. Fred Saliba
took the $18 000 prize for the Main Event ahead of many
other respected opponents. Other winners over the five-day
event were Lee Nelson, Tracey Varcoe, Martin Comer, Jenko
Leong and Glen Athanassiou. Two bonus prizes were awarded
to Constantine Harach and Mike Iven.
Constantine will be the guest of John Kobec in Moscow,
who kindly donated US$500 and accommodation to be given
away at the Championship. Mike was awarded the accommodation
prize at Bellagio and I am sure will enjoy the hospitality
offered by Edna Dalton. Both Edna and JK have supported
Australian poker for many years and I am sure it is very
much appreciated by all Australian Tournament players.
The next event on the Aussie calendar is The
Victorian Championship. For those Interstate or Overseas
players looking for last minute accommodation, Tournament
Director, Danny McDonagh still has a few rooms available
at the luxurious Crown Towers. Rates are Sunday to Thursday
$198, and Friday & Saturday $247.50. If you would like to
book a room at this special Poker rate please email Danny.
I am sure that this event will be well supported, as there
will be several opportunities through Super Satellites to
win seats in The Aussie Millions.
The Canberra Casino Dealer's tournament has been announced
and will consist of two Holdem events over two days. The
first will be $250 Limit Holdem, followed the next day with
$350 No Limit Holdem. The dates are the 17th and 18th November
and as I am sure as all casino dealers can relate to, leave
should be booked now to avoid missing out. Last years event
attracted 55 entrants from three states and I am sure will
attract more this time. It is sure to be a great couple
of days for casino staff to enjoy being on the other side
for a while.
