Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America

Mel Judah: Legend of Poker

Hello again and welcome back to Poker in America. It's hard to believe that we're already in September; before we know it we'll be breaking out the winter jackets, and for the less fortunate, shoveling snow from our driveways. Though, let's not get too far ahead of our selves, we have poker to discuss. When we last left off, the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino was heading down the home stretch toward the $5,000 World Poker Tour No Limit Hold'em main event. Much has been won and lost since then, so let jump right in with both feet.

We pick up action in Event 15 and the Lowball World Championship. 50 of the country's best Low Ball specialists stumped up the $1,000 (+$60) to get the post WSOP bragging rights. Andy Sacino, an executive host at Hollywood Park and a former owner of the Gardena Club beat out many of his old patrons to take home 1st place and a crisp $20 grand.

Avner LevyThe next day the players returned for a reduced buy-in ($500) No Limit Hold'em Event 16. Players were allowed one optional re-buy in this event and with 197 players the 100 re-buys the prize pool rocketed to $148,500. The electric and some times eccentric poker pro Anver Levy beat out fellow top players Surinder Sunar (2nd) and Toto Leonidas (3rd) to take the $59,400 first place prize. Anver's titles include a World Poker Open event this year, a Four Queens win and a best all-round at the Normandie Casino.

John CernutoAlong to Event 17 the always-interesting H.O.E (Hold'em, Omaha hi-lo and 7-card stud hi-lo) match was on the menu. Another $500 buy-in greeted the players at the cage. Playing his three favorite games, with World Series bracelets in each, "Miami John" Cernuto had a fairly easy win. As reported by Max Shapiro, The veteran pro came to the final table with the chip lead, gave it up a couple of times, but was never far behind. When he got heads up with Chad Brown, an actor, Cernuto had nearly a 3-1 lead and quickly powered his way to victory and $23,000.

Reduced buy-ins yet again for Event 18 and the $300 Limit Hold'em match. Those of you who watched ESPN's coverage of the 2003 World Series of Poker Coverage just might remember the winner of this event, Gary Margolis from the 1st episode. ESPN decided to parody the concept of "dead money" and sponsored Gary in the tournament so they could follow his exploits (or lack there of). Gary had the last laugh this day though as he took 1st and $76K from 301 other players. That the way, Gary, quiet the critics!

David LeviMoving along, another bargain buy-in was in the works the following day, this time though for some good old fashioned 7-Card Stud Event 19. A respectable 145 players was enough to get the prize pool to $43,500. David Levi, the former pro soccer player turned pro poker player beat out another tough final table to collect his $17,200 first place prize. This year he also has an Omaha Hi/Lo victory in Hustler Casino's Grand Slam of Poker, where he made five final tables and was second to Chris Grigorian in the all-around points race.

Men NguyenOn to Event 20 and a little Limit 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo / Half Limit Omaha Hi-Lo. You know when there's a mixed game event that it'll generally be a field of crafty Pro players battling over the dead money. One of the craftiest of them all, 2001's co-player of the year, Men "The Master" Nguyen rose to the challenge to take first place. Said Men after the match, "I am the best player." I don't know about that, but he's certainly up there among the best.

Scotty NguyenEver forward we make it to the last of the "cheap" buy-ins and another dose of Limit Hold'em ($300) Event 21. Yet another one of Poker's top players rose to the challenge. Super Star Scotty Nguyen, 1998 WSOP champ, drilled his way though the mammoth field of 342. The prize pool, edging just over 100K, was hotly contested. It didn't get any easier on the final table for Scotty either. With players like Warren Karp, Men 'The Master' Nguyen, Kathy Liebert, and Scotty Warbucks to contend with Scotty Nguyen had his work cut out. Scotty, never one to be intimidated, skated away with $38,475 for the win.

Playtime was over, big buy-ins only from here on in, and to kick if off was Event 22 Limit 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo ($1000 buy-in). Only 73 players for this match, but that was just fine with Darwin Smith, all the easier for him to walk away with the $29,000 for first place.

Charlie ShotenEvent 23 was next. Another Hi/lo game was on the schedule but this time Omaha. Scotty Warbucks (aka Charlie Shoten), has been absolutely on fire and had the embers burning again for his 2nd victory of this year's Legends. Along with several final table and first place finishes recently, Charlie finished second in Commerce's Cal State championship and also won a Hustler championship event. Scotty might be making a run at player of the year.

Onward to Event 24 and the $1,000 Limit Hold'em event. In a 14-hour marathon, a record for the Legends, lawyer Eric Liebeler finally outlasted the other 135 players and picked up an even $54K. When all was said and done, at 9:20 am, Eric said he had a good time because he found all his final table opponents very pleasant.

The $1,000 No Limit Hold'em Event 25 was next. The event drew 194 players, a huge leap over last year's 112. 78-year-old Gene Resnic might not be a spring chicken but be kept pecking away at his opponent's stacks with hypnotic regularity. With the total prize pool just under $200K, Gene walked away with almost half of that $77,600.

Dan HeimillerFast forwarding to Event 28 and the Half Limit 7-Card Stud Hi-Lo /Half Limit Omaha Championship. Dan Heimiller an aspiring pro, picked up his first money finish in almost 10 months. The $26,800 likely made it worth the wait. Dan Heimiller was overjoyed to shake his worst losing streak ever. "Before, when people told me they had been running bad for more than two months, I thought it was impossible. Now I know that anything can happen"

Pot Limit Hold'em Event 29 was poker de jour the following day. New York resident Tom Brownscombe started the final table with the fewest chips, was soon all in and survived by hitting a two-outer on the river. The next thing he knew he was the winner and $55,200 wiser.

Mel JudahWith a few promotional events in-between, it was time for the 3 day $5,000 WPT Main Event. If you though that poker was on the rise, you're right, if you're skeptical on it's popularity, look no further than the numbers from this match. 309 players showed up for the 5K event. In total, 135 more people than the year before. The $1,545,000 prize pool also set an all-time record for any Bicycle Casino event. Only 54 players would survive day 1. Second-day play resumed at 4:15 p.m., with antes of $200 and limits of 6-12k Chip leader was the aptly named Chip Jett with $99,900. At the end of day 2, 6 players would be getting the TV time and seats for the final day. The next player out would get $54,075. That sounds nice, but all players had their eyes on the $579,375 for first place. On to the final day. As Max Shapiro reports: "In a spectacular, made-for-TV finish, Mel Judah captured the $5,000 Legends Championship/WPT event by breaking Paul Phillips, straight versus straight. When the board showed A-6-3-5-4, Judah, with 9-7, had the high end while Phillips, with J-2, had the ignorant end". A former ladies hairdresser who started playing poker with friends when he was 14, he has been traveling the international tournament poker circuit for years. Judah has had numerous World Series cash-outs, with two bracelets

September will be a busy month, so if you haven't seen what's in store for you at your local card room, please click here. Next time we'll take a look at two tournaments that are shaping up to be instant classics. The 2003 United States Poker Championship at the Trump Taj Mahal and Heavenly Hold'em at the Commerce casino. Both events are breaking records in attendance as well as Prize pools. There's still time to get seats in these tournaments, so pack a bag and head out for a little poker. You deserve it

Mel Judah Interview With Mel Judah, World Poker Tour Winner at Legends of Poker
By PokerPages

PP: Mel, How long have you been playing poker?

Mel: Since I was about 14 yrs old I watched my father play 5 card draw poker. He was a technical player and I learned at an early age starting hands to play in what position, so the knowledge I accumulated helped me in my poker career. The most important thing he ever told me about poker was lose the minimum and win the maximum

PP: What attracted you to the game in the first place?

Mel: Played for fun in the early days, my wife and son went to Australia for a couple of months to see her family and my friends asked me to go to the Victoria Sporting Club in London where they played poker. My proff poker career started at The Victoria Sporting Club and from there I went to private games and never looked back....Read More

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe

We have had two exciting events in the last couple of weeks namely the Bodensee Poker Championship in Bregenz and the Barcelona Open in Spain.

Emin OgurkOver in Bregenz, Austria there were some good sized fields with the locals taking most of the spoils. Event 1 saw Emin Ogurk collect €10,710 in the €285 Limit 7- Card Stud from a field of 65 entries. This was Emin's first tournament success in Europe.

Harald HausleinThe €190 Pot Limit Omaha went to Harald Hauslein from Germany who won €10,010 from a field of 58 entries. This was also Haralds first tournament success in Europe and just shows that the new guys can win any poker tournament.

Erich KollmannErich Kollmann one of the best tournament players in Austria took the €950 No Limit Hold'em from 44 other players netting a nice return of €15,080. This was Erich's first win in Europe since May 2,000 but he has made the money on many occasions. I'm sure it was a relief to get back to winning ways.

Harald CasagrandeHarald Casagrande from Austria won €7,250 in the €190 Split Limit Hold'em. Harry as he is known is a regular winner at most of the Austrian venues but his biggest payday was for being 6th at the Lido event at the MasterClassics in Amsterdam 2002.

Jan Peter YachtmannThe final event saw Jan Peter Yachtmann another German win €7,040 in the €285 Limit 7-Card Stud. Like the fist two winners this was also jan's first major tournament success.

Over in Barcelona we had participants from many countries obviously mixing a bit of tournament poker with a holiday. The numbers were well up on their last festival and that may be a reflection on the tournament organiser Thomas Kremsner and Nic Szeremeta who I believe had a hand in promoting it.

The first event was €200 Limit Hold'em which was won by Marion Flock from Germany, €18,000 with Nic Szeremeta making the money in 9th place.

F. Bademansour who I think is English won the €200 Pot Limit Hold'em and a nice 1st prize of €18,500 and with players at the final table from Spain, Sweden, USA, England, France and Ireland this was truly an international field.

Marcel LuskeOne of Europe's finest tournament players Marcel Luske then proceeded to take Barcelona by storm by winning back to back tournaments. First was the €200 Pot Limit Omaha and €19,730 and next day it was the main event, €1,000 No Limit Hold'em which had an astonishing field of 114 players. Marcel won €41,000 making a grand total of just over €60,000 for his weekend away.

Next up in Europe is the Autumn Tournament at the Aviation which starts on the 9th September with the main event being the €2,000 No Limit Hold'em on the 20th.

Poker in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.

Since our last newsletter I have received the full schedule for the European Poker Classic at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London, one of the major events in the European calendar, running from the 6th to the 12th October. There are 6 events to choose from ranging from £200 for the Pot Limit Hold'em right up to the Main Event which is £1,500 No Limit Hold'em. Each event is run over 2 days and The Vic have issued the structures for each tournament which I will be happy to forward to you if you want to e-mail me. On the 4th and 5th of October the Vic are also running SuperSatellites for the £750 Hold'em, £500 7-Card Stud, £500 Omaha and the £1,500 No Limit Hold'em starting at 3pm and 8pm each day.

I have also received the schedule for the October Harbour Lights Festival at the increasingly popular Rendezvous Casino in Brighton. Owned by London Clubs International it is nice to see this particular Casino chain putting so much effort into promoting poker on the south coast. As usual they have a sensible schedule to suit both the locals and the travelling players with buy ins ranging from £25 to the main event which is £500. There are loads of supersatellites both prior to the festival and every day during it to ensure there are healthy number in the 2 bigger priced events. Thanks to all the staff including the marketing department for putting a great effort into attracting poker players to Brighton.

At the time of writing I do not have the results from the September Festival at Napoleons Casino in Sheffield and if anyone could get the results it would be appreciated as the Casino in general are most unhelpful.

Until next time, take care...

Andrew Lacey
