Poker In America
Tim Knopp of PokerPages
writes about Poker in America
Toto does the Trick
Hello again everybody and welcome back to Poker in America.
Some of the trees are starting to turn their colors and the air
is getting a bit cooler, but the poker action hasn't been this
hot all year. Currently, there's several great events in full
swing so lets get straight into the action at the United
States Poker Championship.
The
$10,000 No Limit Hold'em Championship Event was full of all the
big names in poker, as 99 players entered, producing a prize pool
of $970,200. Day
1 saw the field whittled down to 69 and what a line up we
had at the top of affairs. Leading was Ted Forest closely followed
by, Phil Helmuth and Erik Seidel. Day
2 saw the field reduced to 6 players just like a World Poker
Tour event but this tournament was not part of the WPT. Erik
Seidel now lead the final
table from Phil Helmuth and 2003 WSOP bracelet winner Toto
Leonidas.
It was Toto however who proved the best on the day taking a first
prize of $388,080 from Seidel in 2nd $223,146 and Helmuth in 3rd
$116,424.
The other main Championship Event at the Taj Mahal was the $4,000
Limit
7-Card Stud Championship. Nick Hanna from San Jose, California
proved to be the Champion winning $112,000 for his two day effort.
Nick had previously just missed out on a WPT final place at Foxwoods
in 2002 where he came in 8th.
Paul
Darden from New Haven, Ct, won the $1,000
Limit 7-Card Stud taking home $32,400. You may remember Paul
won a WSOP bracelet in the $2,500 Stud in 2001 proving that he
is one of the top stud players in the world.
Another
WSOP bracelet winner Allen Cunningham won the $1,000
No Limit Hold'em and $63,180.
Other winners at the USPC were:
$300
Limit Hold'em, Robert Lefemina ($34,854)
$300
Limit 7-Card Stud, Alan Colon ($22,440)
$300
No Limit Hold'em, Ray Mordekhai ($40,182)
$300
Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, Bobber Sherry ($21,060)
$500
No Limit Hold'em, Martin Berchenko ($64,010)
$500
Limit 7-Card Stud, Chiajan Chen ($27,000)
$500
Limit Hold'em, David King Jr ($32,565)
$500
Limit 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo, Phillip Armstrong ($22,400)
$500
Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, John Urpsis ($21,645)
$1,000
Limit Hold'em, Walter Morill ($32,800)
$300
No Limit Hold'em, Benjamin Murray ($30,081)
$500
No Limit Hold'em Louis Asmo ($39,800)
Also being played at Atlantic City but in the Borgata Casino
was the Borgata
Poker Open a new recruit to the World Poker Tour. There were
3 warm up events and then the televised championship event.
Event
1 $500 Limit Hold'em saw 181 entries producing a prize pool
of over $90,000. Matthew Morrissey won his first major tournament
and $36,200.
Event
2,
$500 7- Card Stud went to regular tournament pro Mark Seif. Mark
picked up $21,800 in demolishing a field of 109. Check out Mark's
profile
on pokerpages and if you are a member of PokerSchoolOnline
then check your home page as Mark gives you a valuable poker tip
from the pros.
Paul
Phillips from Las Vegas who had a massive chip advantage in the
recent WPT Championship at the Legends of Poker only to come in
2nd to Mel Judah made slight amends when winning Event
3 at Borgata, the $500 No Limit Hold'em. Paul picked up a
handy $64,010, which was a far cry from the near $600,000 in the
WPT Legends event. Paul has had some good wins at places like
the Orleans Open, and the L.A. Poker Classic and could well be
knocking at the door for a WSOP bracelet.
The
final tournament at the Borgatta Open was the $5,000
No Limit Hold'em, WPT event. 2001 World Champion Carlos Mortenson
had a healthy lead going into the last day but just at the time
of writing the result has just come in that Noli Francisco has
taken the first prize of $470,00 from a player who seems to be
making all the finals this year Charlie Shoten.
Earlier in the month the Commerce Casino staged their annual
Heavenly
Hold'em and again there were plenty of big names in attendance.
The selling point for Heavenly Hold'em in year's past has been
the budget conscious buy-ins and the huge guaranteed prize pools.
This year was no different. I'm sorry, I stand corrected, there
was one glaring difference this year from year's past. The number
of players from this year's event in almost every event shattered
the numbers from last year. Add Heavenly Hold'em to your list
of million dollar events. In ten events an amazing 3012 players
combined to build a $1,044,100 total prize pool. Let's take a
quick look at how it all went down in Cali.
Event
1 Limit Hold'em featured a $200,000 Guarantee for only a $300
buy in, with that sort of incentive it was no surprise that 382
players came to play. Paul Abbamonto from La Verne, Ca. took first
and almost cracked $100 grand for his first place prize. Poor
Paul had to settle for $92,020.
The next day we had Event
2 No Limit Hold'em. With a slightly smaller buy in, the discounted
event drew 483 players. Taking advantage of the unlimited rebuys
through the first three rounds the players re-bought 609 times
to create a $109,200 prize pool. Santa Monica Californian native
Josh Wentlandt rose to the challenge and took first and $40,410.
We
had another $100 buy in on day three with Event
3 Pot Limit Hold'em. 244 players took their seats when play
began but it was Bill Regner of Walnut, California who took the
$19,970 first place prize. Bill had to beat out top pro Melissa
Hayden (5th place) to secure his first place cash.
Moving
along to Day 4 and Event
4, Limit Hold'em. Another huge field of 408 players showed
up for competition and their $100 apiece got them their seats.
Jack Boghossian from L.A. took home the $15,090 first place prize.
Players
come the following day looking for their favorite brand of Tournament
Poker. Of course this was Event
5 and the $200 No Limit Hold'em. 219 players sat down to match
wits at the start of the day. One of the many strong Texas Pros
hailing from Houston Vinny Vinh took first and $34,000. The win
adds to the many final table appearances on the circuit this year.
Back
again to Pot Limit Hold'em in Event
6. In a tough final table the featured several seasoned Pros
such as Thor Hansen (6th) and Sirous Baghchehsaraie (3rd) it was
another crafty veteran in David Pham who took 1st and $20,215.
The rest of the $53,200 prize pool was paid out to 18 other places.
Taking a Page out of Layne "back to back" Flack's WSOP
book, David Pham was at it again the following day waltzing his
way through the 202 other players for the $200 No Limit Hold'em.
Pham, picking up his 2nd win in as many days added another $30,400
to his winnings from Event
7.
In
what might have been the biggest value, we move to Event
8 and Limit Hold'em. With $200,000 Guarantee, and Unlimited
Rebuys another monster player field was expected. Players didn't
disappoint as 316 players combined for 352 re-buys to go over
the guarantee by $400 ($200,400). JC Tran was all smiles as he
picked up $74,150 for first place. Here in the office we were
all curious to see what the turn out would be like the following
day with Event 9.
Event
9 Featured the Same buy-in ($300) but didn't offer the guarantee.
The hitch was that it was the more popular variety of No Limit.
As it turned out, the players went for the value and the numbers
were slightly down for Event 9 with only 272. The 272 was still
good enough to create a $81,600 prize pool. Pro Ernie Sebastian
took home first and just over $30K for his efforts.
To
wrap up Heavenly Hold'em we went back to Limit Hold'em in Event
10. For the finale The Commerce would add $15,000 to the prize
pool. With the bonus money the prize pool jumped to $86,800. Of
the 359 players the whimsical An Tran took first and just over
$32K
Finally the Four
Queens Poker Classic has just got under way in downtown Vegas.
Always a popular event on the tournament circuit the Four Queens
has tournaments for everyone sometimes 3 per day. Full results
from the Bonnie Damiano run event will appear in the next edition
of the newsletter.

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt of
PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
The Autumn
Tournament at the Aviation Club in France produced the action
since our last newsletter.
Things kicked off with some small events, €50
Pot Limit Dealers Choice was won by Phillippe Goaziou, €50
No Limit Hold'em won by Yves Baumgarten and €100
Pot Limit Hold'em/ Omaha won by Jerome Zerbib.
Things picked up at the weekend with the €300
Pot Limit Omaha which had 36 entries and a prizepool of €25,810.
Local, Michael Akrich, took the spoils and €10,300. This was Michael's
first European win since 1st July 2000 where he won €56,000 at
the Aviation back in the days when Francs were the buy in currency.
Jean-Michel Henrion won the €300
No Limit Hold'em Shorthanded from 40 entries picking up €5,460.
A regular at the Aviation Jean has always been a bit of a place
horse but finally came good with his first win since 1998.
The
€300
Limit Hold'em/Omaha Hi/Lo went to Uzan Amnon, €4,800
Sharkan
Farnood from Afganistan won the €500
Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo from a really disappointing field of
only 13 entries. Sharkan did the double two days later by winning
the €1,000
Pot Limit Omaha but this time with 38 entries and 15 rebuys
he scooped a first prize of €20,220.
Regular
Aviation winner Chuc won the €500
Pot Limit Hold'em and €12,820. This was Chuc's 7th cash out
in Aviation tournament this year and his 19th overall.
The
main event in the Autumn Tournament was the €2,000
No Limit Hold'em and it was no surprise to see one of France's
best Paul Testud win €39,500. Paul has had tremendous success
at the aviation in the past with his biggest win coming in the
European Championship in 1999 where he won €110,000.
Martine
Oules wife of Backgammon legend Paul Magriel won the final event,
the €300
No Limit Hold'em Shorthanded and €5,180. Martine has previously
come 2nd in the WSOP Womans Championship in 2000 and won the International
Trophy for being the highest non American finisher in the 2001
Tournament of Champions.
Next up in Europe is the Austrian
Classics in Vienna Austria with the main event being €1,000
No Limit Hold'em.

Andrew Lacey of
the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Hello again. There is plenty of action to look forward to in
the UK and Ireland in the next 4-5 weeks, with tournaments to
suit all tastes and pockets. So without further ado, here are
the details of what you can look forward to.
Starting on Wednesday of this week, September 24th, The Grosvenor
Casino in Manchester will stage the Northern
Challenge. There are 5 events to choose from: £100+£10
Pot Limit Hold'em, £100+£10 Pot Limit Omaha, a £200+£20
Pot Limit Hold'em, a £250+20 No Limit Hold'em, and to wrap
things up a £50+£5 Pot Limit Hold'em game. We wish
the Grosvenor every success with the Northern Challenge.
October sees 3 tournaments to choose from. Action in October
kicks off with the European
Poker Classic at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London,
one of the major events in the European calendar, running from
the 6th to the 12th October. There are 6 events to choose from
ranging from £200 for the Pot Limit Hold'em right up to
the Main Event, which is a £1,500 buy-in No Limit Hold'em.
Each event is run over 2 days. On the 4th and 5th of October the
Vic are also running SuperSatellites for the £750 Hold'em,
£500 7-Card Stud, £500 Omaha and the £1,500
No Limit Hold'em starting at 3pm and 8pm each day. It promises
to be a great week of top poker action, with most of the top UK,
Irish and European players playing.
The day after events at the Vic conclude you'll be able to pop
down to Brighton on September 13th to take in the October Harbour
Lights Festival at the increasingly popular Rendezvous Casino.
Owned by London Clubs International it is nice to see this particular
Casino chain putting so much effort into promoting poker on the
south coast. As usual they have a sensible schedule to suit both
the locals and the travelling players with buy-ins ranging from
£25 all the way up to £500 for the main event. There are plenty
of SuperSatellites both prior to the festival and every day during
it to ensure there are healthy numbers in the 2 bigger priced
events. Thanks to all the staff including the marketing department
for putting a great effort into attracting poker players to Brighton.
And
if you're still looking to see some more flops in October, you
should hop on a plane for the short trip from England over to
my native Ireland, where Gentleman Liam Flood hosts the Irish
Winter Festival, running from October 23rd to 26th at the
Merrion Club www.merrioncasinoclub.com in Dublin.
The Winter Festival is one of the Big 12 events and always proves
popular with the UK players who show up in force every time. And
of course the top Irish players are always in force too, trying
to keep the titles in Irish hands.
Liam will be staging 4 tournaments, with buy-ins of €100+€10,
€200+€20, €400+€40 culminating in the Main
Event - the €1,000+€60 two day No Limit Hold'em Championship.
PokerPages wishes Liam and his great team every success in October.
Needless to say you'll find all the results at www.pokerpages.com,
so be sure to check back with us daily during these exciting few
weeks of poker tournaments. Good luck if you are entering any
of the events yourself.
Until next time, take care...

Poker Down Under
Reported by David

Some of The UK's more colourful characters, The Hendon Mob, have
just confirmed their attendance at the Aussie Millions. The Australasian
Championship will conclude their Poker Tour, which commences at
Four Queens Poker Classic on Tuesday 23rd September. These four
gentlemen are sure to liven up both the tournament and live action
in any card room that they visit.
The prize pool for the Aussie Millions now stands at $310,000
as Graeme "Kiwi G" Putt joins the ever growing list
of local players in this event. Graeme won his seat after progressing
through the Tier 1 and 2 satellites held regularly at Crown. While
this may put a smile on Kiwi's face, I am sure there are many
that would prefer he watch from the rails as he is sure to provide
some competition to those with aspirations of becoming the next
Australasian Poker Champion.
Hollywood Park Casino L.A., one of the biggest poker rooms in
America, has commenced satellites for the 2004 Aussie Millions.
Marsha Waggoner and Phyllis Caro are sure to convince a few American
players to make a presence Down Under in January. For full details
of Hollywood Park's Aussie Millions tournament schedule contact
them on 310-330-2800 or Toll-Free: (1) 800-888-4972.
The Christchurch Casino Poker Player Christmas Party is on again.
As in previous years there will be a cocktail party hosted in
the VIP club followed by lots of fun in the Poker Pit. Our friends
across the Tasman will enjoy many opportunities to win a seat
in the Aussie Millions. Commencing on Thursday November 27th two
small buy in tournaments and several satellites for The Aussie
Millions will ensure that a few locals will have a Merry Christmas
and possibly a Very Prosperous New Year.
