Poker In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America

Curse? What Curse?

Hello again every one and welcome back to Poker in America. All is right with the world as tonight the Chicago Cubs took their next step towards the World Series, advancing to the National League Championship. It's been 95 years since my Boys in Blue won it all, so if you think you've hit a dry spell in the card room, just think of the Cubs, and you'll realize your bad luck streak isn't quite so bad after all. Luck is changing though, so if you've been taking a break from the cards, it might be time to head back as there's something a bit magical in the air this Autumn. Enough about baseball though (if we must!), we're here to talk poker, and talk poker we will!

October is going to prove to be a busy month for Poker players in the US, we have 36 major tournaments going on around the world, and most of then are being played right here in the US. Folks in Albuquerque, New Mexico should be really happy in the coming moths. Sandia Casino is trying to establish themselves as the Premiere spot for Tournament poker in New Mexico and just announced their Thursday Night Bounty Series. Every Thursday starting in October for just $50 ($45+$5) you can enter these outrageous Limit Hold'em tournaments. The tournaments have added money to the prize pool, and even better, each week the Sandia Casino will add another $100 dollars more than the previous week making this quite worth your while. The added money for the next Thursday will be up to $500. That's quite a value, so you should really try to make it if you can. Winners of each of these events get qualified into the Final Event that has been dubbed, Too Much Turkey, at the end of November. There will be $2,000 in added money for the final. The first results are in and Jimmy K, of Albuquerque won $1,369. In this first event there were 78 players and a prize pool of $3,910. Expect these numbers to go up greatly as we get close to the final event.

Last time we met players were just getting seated for the final day of the Main Event of the Borgata Open, this casino's first major event. What a way to start Tournament play too, with a World Poker Tour $5,000 buy-in main event!

To recap, play ended in Day 2 with 2001 WSOP champion Carlos Mortenson having a commanding chip lead of almost 300,000 chips to his closest competitor. Everything was in place for him to win the match. As it turns out, in what must have been a huge swing, Carlos didn't even finish the final day in the top three. He had to settle for 4th place and only $70,500 (must be a hard life, "only $70K"). In what should be a great season 2 episode on the Travel Channel's WPT, you'll get to see how the Dark Horse, Noli Francisco, beat out both Carlos and Charles Shoten to take home the WPT Final seat as well as $470,000 and first place. Full Result

Daniel NegreanuJust about to conclude is the Four Queens Poker Classic at the Four Queen Casino is Las Vegas. We've been bringing you reports from this marathon event and we've finally reached the Main Event, the $5,000 buy-in No Limit Hold'em Final. We just finished day 2 of 3 and we're down to the final table. It's still anybody's game, but PokerSchoolOnline instructor Daniel Negreanu has almost a 2 to 1 chip lead over his nearest opponent. We're all well aware of how good Daniel is at preserving the lead, so it'll be tough for the other players to catch up. Peter CostaThe final table of this match looks like the all-star lineup for the WSOP. Alongside Daniel, we also have Kathy Leibert (2nd place in chips), Kirk Conrad (4th place in chips), Dan Harrington (6th), Thor Hansen (7th), and British Pro, Peter Costa, trying to hold on at 9th place in chips. With that line up it should be an excellent final table for all of us railbirds who couldn't make it. Good luck Daniel, bring home the title for those of us here at PSO.

Just getting underway is one of my favorite events at the Bicycle Casino. They like to call it Big Poker Oktober (sic), and now in it's 3rd year, is attracting record numbers. Another budget minded event, for cheapskates like me, as there's no event that has a buy-in larger $100. Did I mention that every event has at least a $10,000 Guaranteed prize pool? With buy-ins that low and guarantees so big at the Bike, you can guarantee yourself 3 things. There's going to be huge numbers, massive prize pools, and TONS of dead money. Let's take a look at how the First 3 matches of this event have panned out:

Event 1 started off the traditional way with a match of Limit Hold 'Em. A whooping 502 players showed up for the first day destroying the $10,000 guarantee and capping the prize pool at $25,200. Angel Juarez is a resident of Santa Ana, CA took charge at the final table and quickly worked though the competition. He's been playing poker only three years, and this was only about his 10th tournament. Way to go Angel.

Event 2 Omaha Hi/lo was no different. Almost 300 players filled the tournament room again smashing the guarantee. James Mena, who drove off with a new Hummer at this year's Legends of Poker all-around points play-off took home the win in this event, and apparently with ease according to Max Shipiro. For his efforts James won a respectable $5,380

Coming into the third day and Event 3 there was no surprise that the guarantee was smashed yet again as we played No Limit Hold 'Em. 400 Players combined to re-buy 839 times to rocket the prize pool to $61,950 quite impressive for just a $50 buy in event. A Canadian poker player named Viet Tran scored his first tournament victory. For his $50 (estimated), Viet took home a smoldering $23,230. If I do say so myself, wow! I may have to take a road trip out to this one next year.

Stay tuned to this event as it's shaping up to be a dandy. We'll give you complete coverage of the rest of this event as it finishes just in time for the next newsletter

Other events of note to look for in October:

East Coast Poker Championships - Turning Stone Casino, October 5 - 11
Pot of Gold - Reno Hilton, October 9 to 19
Anniversary Series 2003 - Spirit Mountain Casino, October 15 to 19
NCP 2003 - Hollywood Park Casino, October 15 to 26
Haig Kelegian Classic - Ocean's 11, October 18 to 19

Be sure to check out all our tournament coverage on www.PokerPages.com, we're adding new events every day.

Until next time, keep flopping the nuts

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe

The Austrian Classics in Vienna Austria and the PokerEm in Baden Austria have been the centre of attention in Europe these last couple of weeks.

Lets start with the Classic at the Concord Card Casino and Event 1 €80 Limit Hold'em which was well attended with 164 players and with 283 rebuys a massive prizepool of €35,760 was achieved with just over €12,000 going to the winner K. Gerhard. K. Gerhard also managed to win the €300 Limit Stud later in the week, €14,560.

A few months ago I stated a name to watch out for was Attila Foris from Hungary and he had back to back wins at the Classics. First he won €9,940 in the €100 Pot Limit Hold'em and then €7,870 in the Pot Limit Omaha. Attila has now won the last 4 major finals he has played in and in 3 others this year he has come 2nd twice and 5th once. Clearly Attila knows how to win when getting into contention.

Robert Binelli who can often be found playing at Hit Casino in Slovenia won the €150 No Limit Hold'em and €11,010. Robert had some near misses in some big events last year namely a 3rd place at the 'Vic' and he was also second in the €1,000 main event at the Classics in 2002.

Another Hungarian Daniel Biro won the €500 Limit Hold'em taking a first prize of €10,660. Daniel now has a record of 2 for 2 in major finals having also won €37,000 in the Worthersee Trophy in 2002.

Rudolf MikotaThe Main Event €1,000 No Limit Hold'em saw 54 players battle it out for a first prize of €19,540. Rudolf Mikota from Austria emerged the winner and this was his fist main success after coming 3rd in a few smaller events back in the 90's.

Miami JohnThe final event at the Austrian Classics featured 2 of Americas finest doing battle, with Miami John Cernuto outlasting Men 'The Master' Nguyen to take first prize in the €500 Limit 7-Card Stud. Miami John the reighning World Heads Up Champion returned to the same venue to scoop a first prize of €12,490.

Men NguyenRaymond BrownThe 14th PokerEm was won by Raymond Brown from the UK €112,239, with Jan Pederson from Denmark in second, €84,179, and Men 'The Master' Nguyen from the USA in 3rd, €61,731.

I will have further details of the PokerEm in the next newsletter.

Next up in Europe is the Moscow Open at the Cosmos Casino in Russia

Poker in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.

Hello again. In this newsletter I'll be taking a look at recent results, upcoming events and reviewing the performance of a number of British players who travelled across the Atlantic to take part in a number of tournaments in the USA.

Results from the Grosvenor Manchester

Since my last newsletter the Grosvenor Casino Manchester staged the Northern Challenge and the results are in. So let's see who won the money in Manchester. Event #1 was a £100+£10 Pot Limit Hold' Em game. After 98 entries and 124 re-buys the prize pool grew to £22,200. Bill White saw off the rest of the field to claim £7,500, with Howard Plant taking £6,000 for second. P Hytner took £3,780 for third.

Event #2 was £100+£10 Pot Limit Omaha. 48 players took part and with 78 re-buys we had a prize pool of £12,200. A deal was done among the final 4 players and it was a player who wished to remain anonymous who won £3,020 in first place. Abed Eid, Osman Mustanoglu and Mickey Wernick each picked up £2,400 each, for their second, third and fourth places respectively.

Next up in Event #3 was a £200+20 Pot Limit Hold' Em game, which saw 62 players and 68 re-buys, so there was £26,000 up for grabs. Howard Plant was obviously in top form in Manchester as he went on to win this event, to add to his runners-up winnings in the £100+£10 Pot Limit game. Howard pocketed £6,000 in first place. R Muller picked up £5,380 in second. T Fladley and Ebed Eid (at his second final table) got £4,000 each in third and fourth place, so it looks like another deal was done.

Ali MalluNext on the menu in Manchester was the £250+£20 buy-in No Limit Hold' Em game, event #4. Only 33 players took part in this one and, with 27 re-buys, there was £15,000 in the prize pool. C Cronin emerged victorious, winning £5,090. Ali Mallu came second winning £2,900 with F Thomas winning £2,200 in third place.
Event #5, and the last event of the Northern Challenge, was the £50+£5 Pot Limit Hold 'Em tournament. 77 players and 126 re-buys put £10,150 in the prize pool. Man Ip took this one down, good for £4,930, with Harry Soloman coming second with £1,930. R Lumb earned £920 in third. Congratulations to all the winners in Manchester and our thanks to the Grosvenor for getting us the results.

Doing Battle Across The Pond

Quite a few UK players headed to the USA in September, as there was a lot of tournament action taking place at the 4 Queens Poker Classic in Downtown Las Vegas. This big tournament ran from September 17th to October 5th, so there was a vast choice of events to enter.

Tony Bolton from London came close in the $100+$20 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event, but eventually busted out in 6th place, picking up just $610, but that would pay for a few more buy-ins to other events.

Paul Westley, also from London, made the final table of a $100+$20 No Limit Hold' Em event, but went out in 9th place with $505, good again for a few more buy-ins.

Roland Fenning from England made the final table in the $200+$30 Limit 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo but could only manage a 7th place finish and $662.

We had two players at the final table of the $100+$20 No Limit Hold' Em event on September 22nd. Paul Westley performed much better this time but had to settle for second place. Well played Paul. Second place paid $5,140 while David Evans from England came in 5th with $1,155.

Barny BoatmanRoss BoatmanSo who could win an event for us? Leave it to the Boatman boys from the infamous Hendon Mob professional London players! Brothers Barny and Ross, in a fairytale final table, ended heads-up in the $300+$30 Pot Limit Omaha event on September 23rd. A full report of the final table can be found here. Other Hendon Mob member, Joe Beevers, just missed out on the money in this event. Eventually Barny got the better of Ross to take the $14,010 first prize. Ross picked up $7,785 in second. Well played both of you!

Bruce Corman from Nottingham picked up $1,500 for his eight place finish in the $300+$35 No Limit Hold' Em event on September 24th, while Tony Bolton made another final table appearance in the $300+$35 on September 26th, earning him $1,230.

The Hendon Mob proved their class again in the $500+$40 Pot Limit Omaha on September 28th.

Ram VaswaniJoe BeeversThree of the Mob made the final 5, and Ram Vaswani won it outright, good for $19,860. Joe Beevers came fourth with $4,415, with Barny Boatman coming fifth with $2,205.

A fantastic performance again by the Hendon Mob! Ram re-invested some of his winnings next day in the $500+40 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event and again made the final table. Unfortunately he could only manage 5th place and $2,160 this time, but a great performance nonetheless.

Peter CostaThe Main Event was the $5,000+$150 3 Day No Limit Texas Hold' Em event. Peter Costa flew the British flag at the final table in this event, but alas did not last long. He was the shortest stack when the final play resumed and ended up going out 9th with $9,410 for his efforts. A full report on final table play is here

Again, our congratulations go to all the money winners.

Upcoming Events

October sees 3 more tournaments to choose from. This week sees the start of the European Poker Classic at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London, one of the major events in the European calendar, running from the 6th to the 12th October. There are 6 events to choose from ranging from £200 for the Pot Limit Hold'em right up to the Main Event, which is a £1,500 buy-in No Limit Hold'em. Each event is run over 2 days. On the 4th and 5th of October the Vic are also running SuperSatellites for the £750 Hold'em, £500 7-Card Stud, £500 Omaha and the £1,500 No Limit Hold'em starting at 3pm and 8pm each day. It promises to be a great week of top poker action, with most of the top UK, Irish and European players playing.

As soon as the European Poker Classic finishes, the Vic will also run another full week of tournaments, with buy-ins ranging from £30 to £250. A full schedule of the week's events can be found here

Coinciding with events at the Vic on October 13th will be the start of the October Harbour Lights Festival at the increasingly popular Rendezvous Casino in Brighton. Owned by London Clubs International it is nice to see this particular Casino chain putting so much effort into promoting poker on the south coast. As usual they have a sensible schedule to suit both the locals and the travelling players with buy-ins ranging from £25 all the way up to £500 for the main event. There are plenty of SuperSatellites both prior to the festival and every day during it to ensure there are healthy numbers in the 2 bigger priced events. Thanks to all the staff including the marketing department for putting a great effort into attracting poker players to Brighton.

Liam FloodAnd if you're still looking to see some more flops in October, you should hop on a plane for the short trip from England over to my native Ireland, where Gentleman Liam Flood hosts the Irish Winter Festival, running from October 23rd to 26th at the Merrion Club www.merrioncasinoclub.com in Dublin. The Winter Festival is one of the Big 12 events and always proves popular with the UK players who show up in force every time. And of course the top Irish players are always in force too, trying to keep the titles in Irish hands. Liam will be staging 4 tournaments, with buy-ins of €100+€10, €200+€20, €400+€40 culminating in the Main Event - the €1,000+€60 two day No Limit Hold'em Championship. PokerPages wishes Liam and his great team every success in October.

Needless to say you'll find all the results at www.pokerpages.com, so be sure to check back with us daily during these exciting few weeks of poker tournaments. Good luck if you are entering any of the events yourself.

Until next time, take care...

Andrew Lacey

Gone WestReviewing Las Vegas Cardrooms
By Gone West

HORSESHOE IS NO RINGER!

Everyone has watched it, "Live from the Horseshoe Casino, the 2003 World Series of Poker!" At least based on the ratings, everyone is watching ESPN and the Travel Channel during the 48th run of these No-Limit spectacles. Yes, the Horseshoe in Downtown Vegas is Mecca for all those who make the annual spring pilgrimage to say they busted out of their $10,000 on the first day because Scotty or Johnnie re-raised his Kings with 3-8 off-suit. Yes, there is no tournament quite like it. Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, that is all true. However, the Horseshoe does have an everyday poker room that lies quietly in the back of the casino, a faded icon of those long gone days when you needed a password and a pistol to play poker at some seedy Southside joint...Read More

Our Intrepid reporter Gone West has been reviewing Las Vegas cardrooms over the last few weeks and sending us in a good insight as to what its like to play cards in the gambling capital of the world. His first review was of Boulder Station and to see how he is rating each cardroom read his introduction

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor

Having just returned from Casino Canberra I am pleased to say that Poker is still kicking along. Although I was only there for the weekend, all three tables were open on Friday and Saturday night with a variety of games being played including short deck (5's up) Seven Card Stud and Pot Limit Omaha. Two and Three Card Manila were also on offer however, I chose to stay clear of these games that appeared to be very tight.

As usual the Poker staff were friendly and offered players complimentary drinks a couple of times a night. The players appeared to be very familiar with each other, some clearly there for the social aspect with a few trying to grind out the nights wages. Overall it was a very pleasant couple of days at the tables and I would recommend it to any East Coast players that want to take a break from their regular game for a week.

Casino Canberra is currently preparing for the Dealers Championship in November that should again set the Sydney crew against their Melbourne rivals. Treasury Casino in Brisbane is also likely to field a few contenders and with a little more experience under their belt, I would not be surprised to see them represented on the final table.

Crown Casino in Melbourne continues to run their weekly $55 tournament every Sunday at 1pm, winners receiving $500 credits to next year's Australasian Poker Championship. This is sure to see the locals well represented in 2004. $65 Thursday tournaments begin at 6:15pm and offer a variety of games, changing each week.

Finally, Perth is likely to get its own satellite for The Aussie Millions at a private residence on October 19th.

For any other questions about Poker in Australia please e-mail me.
