Poker In America

writes about Poker in America
Reno 911
Hello again and welcome to Poker in America. Can you believe
that it's already October? Before you know it we'll all be lifting
our glasses and toasting to 2004. Now that the cooler weather
has settled in, it's a perfect time to warm up your chips at the
nearest poker room. Trick or treat, it's poker time!
This month we're looking at 2 great annual events that are right
up the alley for our readers. Both events, were budget minded
offered those of us who are bankroll challenged a chance to pick
up some big cash prizes. Before we take a look at Turning Stone
Casino's East
Coast Championships, let's first take a look at Reno Hilton's
Pot
of Gold Tournament.
The Poker Room management Duo of Chuck and Star McCormick have
been quietly putting Reno Hilton's poker room on the top of people's
lists for card rooms to visit whenever one's in the vicinity of
Reno, Nevada. This year for the Pot of Gold tournament numbers
were up across the board for each of the tournament's events.
Each day players labored against fields of well over 100 in each
of the daily, and 2nd chance events. Almost all events featured
$120 buy-ins with the exception of the Championship events at
the end of the Tournament
The event officially opened up with a day of satellites but the
following day the Pot of Gold got underway with a bang with the
first of the popular
No Limit Hold'em tournaments. Setting the pace for the rest
of the Pot of Gold, 182 players came prepared. When the dust settled
18 places paid out, but it was John Henry (the poker player, not
the patriot) who took the 1st place prize and $6,710.
Event
2, Limit Hold'em was no different. Out of the 169 players
that paid their $120, only one would be the winner of the 1st
place prize of almost $12,000. After what was reported to be a
marathon head's-up battle between Roger Ankenbauer and Frederick
Hanf, it was eventually the novice Ankenbauer who took home the
green.
The following day they were back to No Limit Hold'em in Event
3. This time however there was re-buys available and the total
prize pool reflected it when it hit $36,375 after the re-buy period
ended for the 153 players. Bill Estes was the "lucky"
one, and took the first place purse of $13, 825
Moving along to event
4, we had another re-buy tournament, this time however it
was Limit Hold'em. 163 players re-bought 137 times to push the
prize pool to just over the $29,000 mark. Reno native and poker
enthusiast, Brian Murphy was able to squeak by professional, hippy
John, to pick up his biggest tournament win of $11,060.
Onward we go to the first of the Limit
Omaha Hi/Lo events. For the first event that drew less that
100 players, a respectable prize pool was still up for grabs for
the 97 players. Omaha specialist David Gage survived several all-ins
to take home 1st and $6,905.
Day 6 we were back for some more Limit
Hold'em, much to the players' pleasure attendance was back
up a bit for this event as 106 seats were filled. A total of 95
re-buys created a prize pool just shy of $20 grand. Tony Le, who
had been playing since event 1 took home first place and just
a hair under $8K.
Next we had the last of the Budget No
Limit Hold'em matches. Nevada resident, Scott Mcinzie waltzed
his way over the field of 115 other players to take home his biggest
wins of the year. Scott won $8,380 in what will be a memorable
experience for him.
On to Day 8 we were back to Omaha
Hi/Lo. Only 79 players were able to make the noon start. Thankfully
there were (65) rebuys in this event to jack the prize pool up
to $13,968. Ken Knight making the trek all the way from Springfield,
Maryland was the last man standing. For his ride back home, Ken
will enjoy counting the $5,585 he picked up in Reno.
107 players showed up for the 1st of the final two bigger buy-in
events. I suppose if we had to, we could call these the Championship
events of the Pot of Gold. Day 9's Game De Jour was Limit
Hold'em; and with a $230 Buy in the $20,758 prize pool was
fiercely contested. Though it was pseudo-pro Marie Gabert who
would be Limit Hold'em Queen for the day with 1st place and $8,305.
Day 10 saw the Pot of Gold's largest turn out. The $330 buy in
No
Limit Hold'em main event drew a respectable 141 players. The
$41,031 Prize pool was also the largest of the entire event. Randy
Sahd was the envy of the other 140 when he took 1st and $16,410.
I'm sure we'll be seeing Pot of Gold in 2004, so keep your eyes
out for the Schedule in a few months.
Also spotlighted this month in our Budget buy-in spotlight this
month is Turning Stone Casino's East Coast Poker Championships.
Tournament director Jason DiBenidetto also reports that in this,
the 2nd year of the ECPC, attendance was up and of course so were
the prize pools. Here's how it all played out in Verona, New York.
In day one of the week long event, Canadian Bob Eliot won the
First of the No
Limit Hold'em events. The 99 players for this event created
a $18,000 prize pool. For Bob, first place was just a hair under
$7,000. Convert that into Canadian dollars, and Bob is the Envy
of Canada.
On to day 2 and some old time Limit
Hold'em. There was a few more for this day's event with 102
players and a first place prize of $3,570. Andy Bobier of Kirkland,
NY was the fortunate son and took first place back to Kirkland.
Ever forward, we move to day 3 and another dose of No
Limit Hold'em. Just 75 players showed up for this event which
make it all the easy for Canadian Pro Mark Howie. Mark was $4,142
happier when the day was done.
Buy-ins were up for event 4 and Limit
Hold'em. There was a $200 buy-in and 47 players for the event
Drew Brongo of Rochester, NY took home almost $4,000 dollars for
his time and his trouble.
Event
5 was another $200 buy-in this time however it was Hold'em
of the No Limit Variety. Pro, Lou Procopio of Liverpool, NY took
his time and worked his way to the top, beating the other 60 players
and taking home the first place prize of $6,650.
Event
6 Limit Hold 'Em Main Event was next and the Prize pools was
beginning to build as 55 players created the $16,000 prize pool.
Paul Kleindienst (Eden, NY) would take the $6,270.
Finally it was time for event
7 and the No Limit Hold 'Em Main Event. The Buy-in for the
main event was a crisp $500. Up state New York pkerplayers came
out for the event and the final drew 126 players. Pro Bill Abraham
won the $31,000 first place prize and is crewed Champ of the East
coast.
The Fall Poker Classic at Canterbury Park saw Eric Musser win
the Championship
Event and $85,777.

When you're looking over the schedules on www.pokerpages.com,
don't gloss over these budget tournaments. These events have something
for everyone. For new players, these events are a good place to
get your feet wet in the tournaments scene and win some serious
dough. For the more seasoned players, these events offer great
overlay as the fields aren't too large, and there's a great amount
of 'dead money' up for grabs. Those can be great events that can
make for a very good time for all.
Be sure to see what's on deck for November by clicking here,
and until next time, see you on the River!

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages
writes about Poker in Europe
The Cosmos Casino, Moscow, Russia has provided the action since
the last newsletter with the Moscow Open.
Event
1 was $300 Pot Limit Hold'em and drew a field of 74 players
making a prize pool of $22,200. Russians not surprisingly dominated
the event and the winner was Andrey Martsev who collected his
biggest tournament payday of $7,537. Andrey a regular in the Russian
major tournaments had his last win in 2002 in the $200 Pot Limit
Omaha at the Taleon Club.
Andrey also managed to come 4th in event
2 $300 Limit 7-Card Stud which was won by another russian
Vitaly Itkin. Vitaly picked up just over $5,000 for coming first
and this was his best tournament result yet.
Event
3 was the $300 Pot Limit Omaha and went to Alexy Popov, $6009.
59 players entered producing a prizepool of $17,700 and again
the final table was dominated by russians which leads me to believe
that far less europeans turned up in Moscow this year. However
poker is definately growing in Russia and the locals are more
than enough to make up a good starting field. If its not a Russian
who was going to win an event it was odds on to be an Australian
as there are many of them playing poker in Moscow these days.
Phil Cannon won event
4 the $500 No Limit Hold'em and $12,052 from Jukka Juvanen
of Finland in second.
Event
5 was the team event which was won by Russia, with Armenia
in 2nd and the Aussies in third.
Event
6 the $300 Pot limit Hold'em saw a prizepool of $44,523 and
the bulk of the prizepool went to A. Dovzhenko. This was a welcome
win for Dovzchenko as he has made plenty of final tables before
but always seems to be a bit of a place horse. He did however
win $11,000 in St Petersburg in 2001 at the Conti Group festival
playing no Limit Hold'em.
Event
7 saw a name that I cant really associate with being Russian
as Chance O'Hara came 10th in the $300 Pot Limit Omaha. I don't
know much about Chance but if he is Russian i would suggest his
parents have been watching too many movies. The winner of the
event was Vitaly Lunkin who got $11,816 for his first place.
The Main
Event was a $2,000 buy in No Limit Hold'em and drew a respectable
43 entries. Jukka Juvonen followed up his 2nd place earlier in
the week by winning this and just over $30,000.
Thank you for Keith Sloan the globetrotting Aussie and tireless
ambassader of poker for providing me with the results.
Next up in Europe is one of the best festivals of the year the
MasterClassics
of Poker from Amsterdam featuring the main Lido event which
last year was won by Angelo Yu Zuoping, €235,224.

Andrew Lacey of the
PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Hello again and welcome to my bi-monthly update on what's been
happening and what's coming up in the UK and Ireland. I'll start
things off with a summary of results at the European
Poker Classic from the Grosvenor Victoria Casino, and from
the Harbour Lights Festival at the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton.
European Poker Classic at the Vic
 A
total of 6 tournaments were held at the Vic earlier this month.
The first event was the £300+£25 buy-in Pot
Limit Hold'em game. Joe Beevers proved his class at the green
felt once more, seeing off 106 other players to take first place
and £23,712 of the £62,400 prize pool, after 101 re-buys. Ali
Mallu, who has also been having a good year, took home £12, 480
in second place with Bruno Micchiardi taking £6,864 in third.
The £200+£20 Pot
Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event on October 7th attracted 93 players
and with 105 re-buys there was £39,600 to play for. Tony Bloom,
who has been playing more tournaments lately, took this one down
for the £15,048 first place prize. C Dalton from Ireland finished
second with £7,920 and A Antonio from England came third, getting
£5,148.
Next
we had the £500+£25 buy-in Pot
Limit 7-Card Stud game, which saw 80 players compete. And
it was another first place win for the Hendon Mob. This time it
was Ram Vaswani who went on to win this one, pocketing £15,010
for his efforts. M Farooq was runner-up with £8,295 while C Alp
got £5,135 in third place.
129 runners entered the £750+£25 No
Limit Hold'em tournament and the prize pool stood at £96,750.
Keith Hawkins, an experienced tournament player, went on to win
this one and take home the £35,000 first place prize. B Samson
came is second, good for £20,257 with £11,497 going to third place
finisher C Bannin.
The £500+£25 Pot
Limit Omaha event drew 96 players. After 67 re-buys the prize
pool grew to £81,500. The winner of this one was Ramin Sai who
netted £28,470. £15,330 went to P Charalambous, while tournament
veteran Willie Tan had to settle for third and £8,760.
On
October 11th the Main Event kicked off - the £1,500+£25 No
Limit Hold' em tournament, with the final played out on October
12th. 121 players went to battle in this event, and when all was
said and done, it was Marcel Luske from the Netherlands who emerged
on top.
Marcel took home a cool £70,000 for first place. Jan Boubli
from France came runner-up to Marcel, taking home £38,600 while
"Mad" Marty Wilson came in third with £20,265.
Congratulations to all the winners at the Vic.
Results from Brighton
The Rendezvous Casino in Brighton staged their Harbour
Lights Festival, which ran from October 13th to 19th. So here
are the results from that festival.
Events proper got under way with a very affordable £20+£2 No
Limit Hold'em game. 57 runners put £4,280 in the prize pool.
M Clark took this one and £1,700, D Wait won £850 in second and
B Cocker won £540 in third.
October 15th saw the £50+£5 Pot
Limit Hold'em tournament and 71 players entered this one.
M Millar won £4,360 of the £10,900 prize pool for his first place
finish. Runner-up was H Leff with £2,180, while third place and
£1,360 went to P Whynam.
Next up was a mixed game event, the £100+£10 Pot
Limit Omaha/Hold'em (round of each) game. 59 entrants put
£14,400 in the prize pool. This event was won by J Grech, who
took home £5,760. Richard Ashby won £2,880 in second and Chandra
Khajuria won £1,800 in third.
The £250+£25 No
Limit Hold'em tournament attracted 58 players, and the prize
pool stood at £29,250. First place and £11,450 went to M Clark,
who defeated C Xanthos in their heads-up battle. Second please
was worth £5,850 and £3,655 went to J Grech, winner of the previous
day's tournament, but having to settle for third place in this
one.
32 players put up the £500+£30 buy-in for the Main
Event , which was a No Limit Hold'em tournament, and the prize
pool stood at £30,840. In an unusual deal, unprecedented that
I know of, the final 12 players agreed to chop the money with
each settling for £2,570. The 12 finalists were D O'Mahoney, K
Callow, S Harris, C Alp, B Bravery, J Fox, K Hurdwell, N Rogers,
M Frisby, P Whyman, M Sellman and R Gustafsson.
Our congratulations also go to all the winners in Brighton.
Upcoming Events
Gentleman
Liam Flood hosts the Irish Winter Festival, running from October
23rd to 26th at the Merrion Club www.merrioncasinoclub.com in
Dublin. The Winter Festival is one of the Big 12 events and always
proves popular with the UK players who show up in force every
time. And of course the top Irish players are always in force
too, trying to keep the titles in Irish hands.
Liam will be staging 4 tournaments, with buy-ins of €100+€10,
€200+€20, €400+€40 culminating in the Main
Event - the €1,000+€60 two day No Limit Hold'em Championship.
PokerPages wishes Liam and his great team every success in October.
November also promises to be a busy month for tournaments in
the UK. First action will be in Southampton, where the Grosvenor
will host the Southampton
Poker Championships, running from November 2nd to 4th.
The Grosvenor Casino "The Sandcastle" in Blackpool
will also host their Northern
Lights Poker Festival from November 6th to 9th inclusive.
And finally the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall will host the Midland
Masters running from November 24th to 30th. Buy-ins to the
various events range from £100+£10, £250+£25, £500+£25 up to £1,000+£25
for the main event - the 2 day No Limit Hold'em tournament. So
there is plenty of action to look forward to in the next few weeks.

the Palms the hippest place in Vegas. The coolest of the cool
stay here and occasionally perform for small crowds. Even the
owners are hip. The Palms is owned and operated by the Maloof
family, the same family who owns the Sacramento Kings and numerous

the various Maloof boys' exploits as single conquistadors living

Poker Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
Poker is still alive and kicking in Perth despite some recent
scepticism. Well-known Perth Poker identity Irene Holzman conducted
a satellite for The Aussie Millions and generated one seat from
nine players. Many of these players had never played a tournament
and a couple were not very familiar with Hold'em. This did not
deter them as they fought it out for their chance to represent
WA in Australia's biggest Poker event.
With a buyin of $500 and $300 rebuys it was not very long before
the $10 000 target had been reached with a significant second
prise of $3 000. Second and third agreed to split the cash, while
Vince Larosa became Western Australia's first entrant in next
year's main event. Vince was very excited about this and is looking
forward to taking his family to Melbourne in January. Many others
that did not enjoy Vince's luck on the day will also make the
trip to Melbourne in the hope of securing their place in this
prestigious tournament.
Crown Casino appears to have hit on a winning formula for their
Sunday tournaments. Over $15000 has been generated in one month
with players gaining entries to the $500 and $100 events in January
with entry as low as $55. This should assist many of Crown's low
limit players that want to be a part of the biggest tournament
ever held in this country. There are still many weeks left for
those that wish to secure a seat in January through this satellite
program. Sunday events begin at 1pm
