Poker
In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
Foxxy!
Hello again and welcome to Poker In America. Turkeys everywhere are starting to get nervous as we creep towards Thanksgiving, so if you're going to add
a few pounds going into the holidays, you might as well head down to the local card room and add a few pounds to your wallet too!
The last quarter of October was a busy month and November is proving to be just as busy. This issue we'll look at one of poker's biggest events of the
year, The World Poker Finals, at the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket,
Connecticut. One thing is for certain, if the WPT is involved, you can bet that there's going to be some wicked prize pools, and all your favorite pros
will be out in full force. So far this year they're averaging over 30 more players in each event, and that is expected to climb as we work towards the 3-day
$10,000 Buy-in Main event on November 14th. Satellites for the main event are still running. So if you want to play but don't quite have the 10 Grand stashed
away under the mattress, come on down to Foxwoods and try to win yourself a seat. We're almost half way thorough this monster, so let's take a look at how
it's all panning out in Connecticut:
The first event of the 2003 World Poker Open drew such a massive crowd that Foxwoods had to scramble for space for all the participants. The $300 buy-in
No Limit Hold'em Event shattered the record for an opening event at the
Foxwoods drawing an enormous field of 726 players. The pros that were running late for this event must have been fuming when they saw the prize pool $219,800
that was up for grabs. Dean Shores was on display when he took charge of the final table and finally beat out AC local Jeffery D. Issacs to collect his
first place prize of $39,564.
The following day, as expected, didn't quite draw the 726 from the night before, but that didn't effect breaking another attendance record. Omaha
Hi-Lo was the game De Jour and a respectable 256 players scrounged up the $300 buy-in. Only 23 places would pay, so the players knew they had their
work cut out for them. When the dust settled though, likeable pro Howard Cohen would take 1st and the $26,792 prize.
On to Event 3 we had some 7-Card Stud. In what surprised me, there
was a higher turn out for the $300 Stud event that there was for the Omaha Hi-Lo match the day before. Over 100 more would play this day. 385 players combined
to create a prize pool of over $100,000 for the 2nd time in 3 days. Billy Seymour can now call himself a 7-Stud specialist as he took first place and $41,125.
Good Job, Billy!
Sticking with Stud, Event 4 featured 7-Stud, this time however Hi/Lo.
Hi/lo must scare some people off, as there were over 100 fewer players than there was for the straight-up game the day before. Out of the 224 players that
decided to give it a go, Joe Marino was out to prove he had the skills and did just that by taking home the first place prize of $24,220.
With the WPT in town,
you knew that the biggest names in Poker would be on hand, yet up to this point not a single one had made a final table. With this, the 5th day of competition,
and the last of the "cheap" $300 tournaments, this pattern would surely start to change. The 5th event was the $300
Limit Hold'em event, and one of poker's favorite Filipino's, former player of the year, Men "the Master" Nguyen put on a show for the amateurs playing
along side him at the final table, taking 1st place and $54,536.
Next up was Event
6 and the first of the $500 buy in events and yet again, another attendance record smashed. And as was expected, with the larger buy-in and a dose of
No Limit Hold'em, the "named" players were showing up in droves. Leave it to a No-Limit Hold'em WSOP champion to get in the way of any hopes for a first
place prize. Huckleberry Seed, Las Vegas Odds maker and Former WSOP Champ, added to his lifetime tournament winnings by dragging the last pot of the night
to collect his juicy 1st place prize of $88,230. Poker's First Lady (to win $1 million in a tournament) Kathy Liebert, came in 3rd place to Huck and took
home a nice $23,230 for her efforts.
Ever forward, the following day we moved along to the $500 7-Card Stud
event. In the lowest turn out thus far only 198 players would battle over the $101,000 prize pool. Thien Phan played it just right to overcome the final
table with his first win in a Major. Thien took home just a hair under $40K in what will be a memorable performance I'm sure.
Next we had another
serving of Omaha Hi/Lo. I've heard Omaha Hi/lo called the game of the
future, though the numbers that have been displayed in this tournament point to the contrary as only 127 paid the $500 entry to get a seat. Vegas Pro Amir
Vahedi, whom you may remember from ESPN's WSOP and WPO coverage from years past wouldn't have it any other way as he made easy work of the final table and
took home a crisp $24,235. Kathy Leibert, making another final table settled for 4th place and just under $5,000.
In the Last event before the PokerPages newsletter approached deadline, we had another match of 7-Card
Stud Hi/Lo. Just 2 more players handed over their buy-ins for the Stud match than the day before to reach 129 players. Aspiring Pro Jeffery D. Cohen
led the charge and didn't look back picking up 1st place and $25,270. Not too bad for a day's "work."
We're almost to the half way point of this match so be sure to check www.pokerpages.com every day for the latest results from the Foxwoods and all over
the country. Next issue we'll see who takes the spot light in winning the Main event. Thanks to Mike Ward and the rest of the Foxwoods staff for putting
together one of this year's top tournys
If you think that the World Poker Finals is all that's happening in September, think again. There's a few more events this month that prove to be just
as exciting and just as profitable. Be sure to check out:
November 9th - 16th: Gold Rush 2003 at Lucky Chances Casino
November 13th - 24th: The Showdown at the Sands (the Million Dollar
Deal) at the Sands Casino, Atlantic City
Feel free to send me your trip reports to any of the events you play in this month, we'll try and include it into the newsletter. See you in a few weeks,

In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
One of the best
tournament festivals of the European year is being played at Holland casino namely the MasterClassics
of Poker featuring the Main Lido event, which always has a huge prize pool.
We have been provided with excellent reports, which I urge you to read, all week from Rolf Slotboom a teacher at PokerSchoolOnline
and if you are like me and enjoy reading his work then take the opportunity to join
the School where you will find more of his great articles.
 The
first event proper €200 Limit hold'em saw Erich Kollmann take a huge lead into the final but after extending it he finally lost out to local player Xiang
Dong Yang who picked up just over €30,000 from a sell out event.
The €500 Pot Limit
Omaha saw some of Europe's best Omaha cash game players enter and made a massive prize pool of €168,500. However the final table was full of relative unknowns
with Martin Blum from Germany emerging victorious with a first place of €64,350.
Next up was
the €200 No Limit Hold'em with the winner being Johan Storakers from Sweden who scooped over €40,000. I have met Johan on a number of occasions in tournaments
and he always struck me as a player who could rise to the very top in both European and World tournaments. He finished 2nd in last years main event and
has had a few first places in major tournaments around Europe.
So onto the No Limit Hold'em Lido Main Event where there were 205 entries making a prize pool of €651,000
The big tournament names were out in force for this event as it carried a first prize of just under a quarter of a million Euros.
Here is the final table line up:
 Sergei
Pevzner Russia 124,000
Marcel Luske Netherlands 192,000
C.T Law England 411,000
Ian Oldershaw England 213,000
Yves Aknin France 191,000
Dave Ulliott England 216,500
Adam Lee England 119,000
Wolfgang Pilecki Germany 53,500
Johan Storakers Sweden 532,000
As expected Devilfish Dave Ulliott tried his successful tactics from the World Poker Open of bullying the table into submission but this time he wasn't
intimidating some of the relative newcomers or Europe's number one player Marcel Luske. Time and time again Ulliott would raise only to find others going
all-in against him and forcing him to lay down. However Ulliott managed to still build a sizeable stack until Marcel Luske re-raised him and after calling
for nearly all his chips with Ace King against Marcel's Ace Queen the devil was left severely short stacked when a queen flopped. But the Devil is never
down and built his stack back up from a perilous 40,000 to once again be one of the chip leaders at over 400,000. Marcel finally finished 4th after running
out of steam and not catching any cards and we were left with Storakers DevilFish and unknown player Ian Oldershaw to fight out the finish. The newcomer
got all his chips in with aces verses Strokakers king 10 and when two tens came on the flop it looked all over for him, but a miracle ace on the river gave
him a full house and he was right in the contest. Devilfish tried his usual tactic of raising pre flop to get in contention but was constantly re-raised
by the other two and finally succumbed to Ian Oldershaw.
The heads up
battle went back and forth with Ian refusing a deal when equal on chips stating he just wanted to play. This proved costly as Johan Storakers went one better
than last year and collected the first prize of €243,540. So it was back-to-back victories for the young Swede and the Americans had better watch out for
him at the World Series as he certainly showed how to lead the Devil a merry dance.

Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
The action has been in Dublin and Southampton since my last newsletter so lets see who walked home with the money.
There was a star-studded attendance in Dublin for the Irish Winter Festival,
held at the Merrion Square Casino. Many top pros from Ireland, the UK and Europe were in attendance, so winning any of the 4 events was not going to be
easy.
In the first event,
the €200+€20 No Limit Hold'em game, 1999 World Series of Poker Champion,
Noel Furlong, saw off 152 other players to win the €19,960 first place prize. Dave Callaghan and Brian Laggan settled for €7,510 each, in second and third
place respectively.
75 players showed up
for the €400+€40 Pot Limit Omaha event. After 65 re-buys, the prize pool
stood at €56,000. Roy Brindley fought off the rest of the field, and a tough final table line-up, to win €24,000 for first. John Kabbaj won €11,200 in second,
with Garry Bush getting €7,280 in third.
The result
of the Main Event, the €1,000+€60 No Limit Hold'em game, was quite remarkable.
At last year's Winter Festival it was Luck Rokach who won the Main Event. Well, guess what, she repeated her performance this year! Lucy saw off 124 other
players to take home the €62,000 first place prize. That is really, really impressive and my hat is off to Lucy. Paddy Hicks was the runner-up winning €31,000,
with Sargon Ruya settling for €15,550 in third place.
The Merrion Club wrapped
up this year's Winter Festival with a €100+€10 No Limit Hold'em game.
119 entries and 179 re-buys put €29,800 in this prize pool. The Hendon Mob always do well in Dublin - Ross Boatman won last year's Omaha event at the Winter
Festival, and Joe Beevers won the Main Event at the Irish Poker Open last April. This time it was Ram Vaswani's turn to fly the Mob's flag. The in-form
Ram, following on from his 7-Card Stud win at the Vic in London last month, cruised to victory in this event. Ram won €11,920 for his efforts. Dereck Williams
took home €5,960 in second place. Third place and €2,980 went to Paul Mac.
Congratulations to all the winners in Dublin, and well done Liam Flood and the team at the Merrion Club, for another great poker festival.
The Southampton Poker Championships have just concluded at the Grosvenor Casino Southampton. Be sure to check back with us for all the results shortly.
Upcoming Events in November
The Grosvenor Casino "The Sandcastle" in Blackpool will also host their Northern
Lights Poker Festival from November 6th to 9th inclusive, where 4 events will be played out. Later this month the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall will host
the Midland Masters running from November 24th to 30th. Buy-ins to the
various events range from £100+£10, £250+£25, £500+£25 up to £1,000+£25 for the main event - the 2 day No Limit Hold'em tournament. There will be a total
of 7 events to be contested in Walsall. So there are some good games to be found in the UK in November.
Good luck if you are playing in any of them.
Until next time, take care....

Playing poor cards well in the small blind can be very profitable in Hold'em
I have had plenty of success recently betting strongly in the small blind, and the strength of the cards have really had no meaning. This type of play
is best at a tighter 10-20 and higher game though as there was just too much calling at the lower levels when I tried it at 4-8 and 6-12. I do this about
once every 2-3 times the button gets to me. My table presence is usually fairly tight.
Basically, I just raise anyone who had made a bet. I only try to do this if there have been only 3-5 callers in the pot and the pot was not raised(less
players are best). It is too hard to blast more than that from the pot even for 2 bets. The goal is to make it 2 bets with 4 or less players.
The key is to be the first player after the flop. You need to bet quickly and decisively no matter what the flop entails and you must be ready to call
any raise and bet out on the turn unless you are reraised on the flop and you are fairly sure you are up against a monster.
I tried this 2-3 times the last few months just as a test, and since then I have kept track of my results. I do not have an everyday poker room I attend,
as I do all my playing while traveling. This is important to be playing with players that do not know your style.
Out of the 30 attempts at this strategy since August, I was successful in taking down the pot 24 times. This was done over the course of about 25 hours
of play. The best hand I had in these 30 attempts (all in 10-20 games) was 2 pair (6's and 8's). Four times I just ran into monster hands, and 2 other times
my bluff was sniffed out and they ran me down.
11 times I won the hands right after my bet on the flop. (Net profit $625.00)
9 times I was called on the flop bet and won with my bet on the turn. (Net Profit $715.00)
3 times I was called on the flop and the turn and won with my bet on the river. (Net Profit $430.00)
3 times I was called all the way to the end with no raises against me. I won once (pair of Kings - had Kd2s in hole) and lost the other 2 times (Both
rags). (Net Profit $40.00)
2 times I was called after the flop and was re-raised on the turn, thus I mucked my hands. (Net Loss $100.00)
2 times I was called after the flop and the turn and was raised on the river. Once I mucked after the raise on the river, the other time I re-raised
(with my 2 pair - I though I was being bluffed but ran into a bigger 2 pair) and was called on the river only to lose the showdown. (Net Loss $180.00)
Overall this was a $1,530.00 gain in profit on hands that I would normally mucked from the Small Blind. An hourly rate of $51.00 per hour which I think
is quite amazing. I am sure with more results my success would not be quite this good, but I still think this is a very strong play that must be in your
arsenal. Overall, for this time period I had a net profit of only $1,700.00 so these plays were my main source of success. I think this is a good play to
try and steal some precious chips.

Reported by David Parlor
The next poker event on the Aussie calendar is restricted to Casino Employees only. Casino Canberra is once again hosting The Australian Dealers Championship
that will run over two days, November 17th & 18th. The first event is Limit Holdem with a buy in of $250; the second will be No Limit Hold'em and will
have a buyin of $350. As casino employees in Australia need to travel interstate to play, this event is always popular and is sure to be well supported
by all of the East Coast casinos.
Those that have not already booked their place may enter on the day and will enjoy a great tournament with live games of varying size to follow. Many
of the casino staff that will be playing now have many tournaments under their belt and are sure to offer some great competition amongst each other. The
Sydney staff showed how good they were last year, but Crown Casino now have a secret weapon in Danny "Taibo" Thai who is the reigning Australasian
Dealers Champion and has featured in many other final tables, definitely the one to beat.
Numbers continue to grow for The Aussie Millions as players from around the world win their way to Melbourne through the many satellite programs on offer.
A great incentive to attend The Aussie Millions is the Poker seminar that will be held on January 14th and will include lectures from Russ Hamilton, Phil
Hellmuth, Annie Duke and Layne Flack. A limited number of seats will be available to all poker players on the Crown Poker mailing list and admission is
free. To reserve a seat please e-mail Sally at Crown Casino.
