Win More in '04
Hello again everybody and welcome back to Poker in America. I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season, and that that the inevitable
diets many of you are probably now on, are successful ones. As you may have guessed, we have a new format for 2004 for the PokerPages Newsletter
and Poker in America. Now, instead of two times a month, we'll be bringing you twice the amount of information in just one monthly newsletter.
So, without further interruption, let's get to it and take a look at how 2004 is starting to shape up.
Starting off the year again was of course, Hollywood Park Casino's Poker
Derby. The Poker Derby isn't exactly what some would call a "major event." However, with the big guarantees that Hollywood Park places
on the prize pools, not only is it a great value, the number of players makes it a great practice run for the America's
Poker Classic later in the month, also in Los Angeles (January 19 to 29).
Just as the cobwebs were being swept away from the New Years Day Celebration, the Poker Derby started off with a bang in Event 1 $120 No
Limit Hold'em. With 326 players and 732 rebuys, they blew through the guarantee to create a $102,625 prize pool. Meda Lubliner probably
didn't know but he made history winning 1st place and $37,455. With the win, Meda becomes the 1st person entered into the PokerPages tournament
archives for 2004! An honor only reserved for one man (or woman).
In Event
2 Limit Hold'em, Amir Vahedi picks up where he left off in '03 when he just barely missed being named player of the year. With his first
1st place finish ($18,585) of 2004, Amir sets the stage for another successful year on the tournament circuit. There was 294 players and
231 rebuys.
Event 3 was 7-Card Stud. With a $20,000 guarantee, many players who weren't used to playing Stud, decided to give it a try. Was it a New
Years resolution to expand the horizons perhaps? 132 players combined 96 rebuys, just enough to push the prize pool over the guarantee at
$22,115. Nash Rizk, an L.A. local took 1st and $8,845.
Next up was Event 4 was the first of the Omaha Hi/Lo Events. Surprisingly, there were a few less users for the Omaha event than there were
the day before for 7-Card Stud. 129 players and 97 rebuys made a modest $21,920 prize pool. One of the very popular old timer's on the circuit
"Super" Mario Esquerra took the $8,770 first place prize. It's good to see Mario hasn't lost his touch.
Moving on to Event 5 the buy-ins were elevated to $200 and the Game was Limit Hold'em. Daniel Ramzi beat out the other 178 players to pick
up the first place prize of $21,960. With 104 rebuys, the total prize pool was $54,900. Winner of event 2, Amir Vahedi, made another final
table finishing 6th ($1,920).
Onto Event 6 we had the first of the three $200 buy-in $60,000 guarantee events. The game was No Limit Hold'em and featured multiple re-buys
through the first 3 rounds. The 224 players re-bought 134 times to push the prize pool to $71,600. L.A. professional, Hung Nguyen took first
place honors and $25,350.
Event 7 was a new event to the Poker Derby; it was Dealer's Choice (Hold'em, Omaha, Stud). Only 48 players would sign up for this event
but the $6,550 first place prize was still hotly contested. When the chips stopped and the dust settled professional Randy Holland headed
to the cage to collect his winnings.
Event 8 it was back to the $60K guaranteed No Limit Hold'em games. There were substantially less players in the 2nd go-round with just
159 players. However, wanting to jack up the prize pool, they re-bought 259 times to get the pool to rise to $81,090. Going back to back,
Randy Holland did it again, showing that he is a jack of all games. Randy added another $32,440 to his winnings bringing his 2-day total
to over $38,000. Mario Esquerra and Ramzi Daniel, winners in previous events finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
With Event 9, we had the final Limit Hold'em match. 135 players busted the guarantee again as the got the prize pool up to $57,035. Josh
Rittenberg took the first place prize of $22,815. One of my favorite players to watch and the scourge of spell checkers everywhere, Sirous
Baghchehsaraie took 9th place ($855).
We
come to the close of the Poker Derby in event 10, Limit Hold'em. With reduced buy ins, it gave players one last chance to come out ahead.
The 242 players were eager to do that as their 545 re-buys illustrate. With $76,340 at stake, this was a fierce competition. Marcel Sebag
never looked back though as he ultimately took 1st place and $27,870.
Thanks to Robert Thompson and the rest of the HPC staff for putting together another top-notch tournament and once again giving us a great
way to start the Year.
There's one thing for certain, if it's January and you're a poker player, your thoughts are focused on Tunica Mississippi and the 5th
Annual Jack Binion World Poker Open. This folks, is what we like to call a "Major event". Running almost the entire month of January,
the WPO offers several big buy in events. So, if you've come to play, you're going to need at least $500 to enter, and that's just for starters.
Play comes to a climax on the 20th with the $10,000 Buy-in Main event with 1 million guaranteed for 1st place. When owner/operator Jack
Binion is involved, rest assured that the poker elite will be well represented. In addition to the poker elite, 100's of poker's brightest
and smartest "students" will also be in as the 2nd Annual PokerSchoolOnline Convention is also in effect at "the shoe". As I've watched
the results come though I've seen an awful lot of PokerSchool players making it into the money, showing once again PSO
pays for its self, so stop waiting and join today!
The 5th
annual WPO started on the 6th of January, kicking off in traditional fashion with 2 days of single table and multi table satellites for
the main event for players who wanted to try and get a seat but didn't quite have the $10 grand stuffed away under the mattress. After the
satellites concluded, on the 8th we had the official kick off with Event 1 Pot Limit Omaha, with the $500 buy in, an impressive 259 players
filled the seats in the tournament room. Not only that, they also combined for 320 re-buys inflating the prize pool to $270,615. Ed de Haas,
a Dutch Omaha ring game player, who had to be talked into playing the event by his friends, was glad for the peer pressure as he took first
and walked away $100,126 richer. This was the biggest 1st place prize of 2004, but that record looked to be broken very quickly.
The following
day, play resumed with the first of the $500 Limit Hold'em events and Event 2. A Tunica record for the amount of players in a tournament
was shattered when a staggering 918 players took their seats for Day 1. In fact, according to media director, Nolan Dalla, no tournament
with a $500+ buy-in has ever attracted so many entries. It looks like the momentum poker picked up in 2003 is still in full effect. California
Poker Pro John Phan knew this would be a tournament to remember as he picked up the first place prize of $160,965. PokerSchool Online members
made them selves heard as well as Vernon Harrison (5th, $18,706), and Joe Carothers (27th, $2,610) made the money also. I'm also proud to
say that my home state of Texas was also well represented in the money, 7 out of the top 12 money winners were from the Lone Star State.
At this time I'd like to add a "yee haw" to all our Texas winners.
In Event
3 we had Omaha Hi/Lo. Shattering another record, the 410 players was another Tunica record for an Omaha match. Californian Can Kim Hua would
take 1st place, $69,798 and his 1st major tournament win of his short career. 27 spots paid in this event.
Onwards
to Event 4, the first of the $500 buy in No Limit Hold'em matches. It's been a year of firsts so far, and Event 4 kept that trend alive
by attracting 950 players. As Nolan Dalla reported, no tournament with a $500 buy-in has ever attracted so many entries. Nearly half-a-million
in prize money was divided amongst the 36 top finishers, in what was according to many witnesses one of the most exciting poker tournaments
the South has ever seen. Bob "Buzz Saw" Mangino of Schenectady, NY was the envy of the other 949 players however as he took home the $166,702
first place prize.
Next
was event 5, 7-Card Stud, as expected, there wasn't 950 players for this match, but still a very respectable 160 players did take their
seats. Can Kim Hua, winner of event 3, became only the 2nd player to win 2 bracelets in the same year when he took 1st place in this event.
Can Kim added another $31,040 to his already hefty total, pushing him over the $100,000 mark for the WPO. We'll be watching him the rest
of the way to see if he can go for 3!
Ever forward,
next we come to Event 6, and the $500 buy in Pot Limit Hold'em. 454 players dished out the buy-in and looked at a $209,990 prize pool. History
repeated it's self from the day before, as the first place prize of $77,694 was given John Phan, winner of event 2, became just the 3rd
muti event winner in the WPO. John added the $77,964 to his other hefty win of $160,965. My guess is that John thinks it was a good idea
to make the trip to Tunica.
The
following day, 223 players paid to enter the last of the $500 events and 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo. Peter Phillips of Atlantic City, NJ rose to
the top and beat out tournament pro Thor Hansen in an epic heads up match and collected $38,816. If you watched season 1 of the WPT, you
know that wasn't an easy win for Peter.
Next
was Event 8, Ace to 5 Limit 3 Draw Lowball, the game pro's love because not too many newbie's know, or like to play the game because of
it's level of difficulty. This was the first of the $1,000 buy in events and only 43 players decided to play, giving a much needed breather
for the tournament staff. There were 45 re-buys and Charles Taylor of Owensboro, KY took home the 1st place prize of $29,915.
Our
first half coverage leaves us at Event 9 and the $1,000 Limit Hold'em match. Habib Khanis, beat out the other 257 players to take home a
first place prize of $86,157.
Be sure to check www.PokerPages.com daily for daily results and videos
from the WPO as this historical match takes place the rest of the month. It's looking like it's going to be a wild finish. Also check out
the latest news about the World Series of Poker.
Just across town, at the Grand Tunica Casino, the low-rollers are playing in the 6th
Annual Tunica Classic. Offering the same great poker action at a fraction of the cost, the Tunica Classic has been a favorite for the
players looking to risk less for a still nice reward. Not to mention, there's a lot less of those pesky "Pro's" lurking in the player field.
Buy in's start at $100, culminating in to the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event. Click
here to view the daily results up to this point and see if any of your friends have made the money.
Looking ahead to the rest of the month, we look forward to two other huge events, this time settling in California. First we have America's
Poker Classic at the Bicycle Casino. January 19 to 29. The America's Poker Classic is offering over $200,000 in guaranteed prize money.
If you're lucky enough to be among the top point getters in the event, you have a chance to play off with the other winners and a shot at
a 2004 Ford Mustang.
Also in Los Angeles, we have the 2nd WPT event of the year at the L.A.
Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino, January 30 to February 24,. What else needs to be said about this annual classic? It's going to
be a wild time with huge prize pools and 100's of players. No Limit Hold'em enthusiasts will note that Commerce Casino is currently hosting
a series of special satellites that ultimately place winning players in a free seat at the L.A. Poker Classic/WPT $1 million guaranteed
$10,000 No Limit Hold'em Championship event.
There's still time to reserve your seat at these 2 events, so if you haven't booked your flight yet, what are you waiting for?
Best wishes to you in 2004, and see you next time

Poker
In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
Poker in Europe is off to a slow start in 2004 so lets look at the upcoming major events starting with the Euro
Finals of Poker in Paris February 1st to 15th.
The
main event is the €5,000 European No Limit Hold'em Championship 14th-15th February, which was last won by Ram Vaswani in 2002 as last year
it was replaced by the televised WPT event. Ram picked up €107,000 in beating 59 players so lets hope that the 1st prize this year will
top that.
The €3,000
European Omaha Championship February 7th-8th is the most prestigious European Omaha tournament of the year and has been twice won by Rob
Hollink of Holland. Last year Rob won €122,000 from a fantastic field that included some top American players such as Erik Seidel and Andrew
Bloch, who were over for the WPT event. I doubt the tournament will be as big this year but I do expect Rob to feature at the final table
again.
Seniors Events are commonplace in the USA and are organised by Oklahoma Johnny Hale who has decided that Europe would also be a good place
to hold one. The Aviation is the venue for the 1st ever European Seniors Event on the 10th of February and has a €1,000 buy in so if you
are 45 or over and don't want to be taking on the young hotshots then this is the event for you.
There is plenty of variety at the Aviation with tournaments for all budgets including Super Satellites for the Grand Prix de Paris on the
17th July, which will be a World Poker tour tournament.
March sees the Vienna Spring Poker Festival at the
Concord Card Casino in Austria which features the popular European World Series of Poker Trial played to the same format and starting chips
as the WSOP but at a fraction of the cost, €2,000. The estimated 1st prize will be in excess of €100,000 and was won last year by Josef
Klinger.
Last
year the Concord held the World Heads Up Championship won by Miami John Cernuto but this year the event has a change of venue and will be
played in Barcelona Spain between June 11th and 20th. The schedule has not been announced yet but as soon as I have more details I will
add it into pokerpages.
The next event in Europe is the 7-Card Stud Winter Challenge
in Seefeld Austria on the 28th January and I will be featuring the results in our next newsletter.
Until next time good luck where ever you choose to play, but try to get to Paris for some great tournaments.

Poker
in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Happy New Year to all our readers and welcome to our monthly update on the poker scene, in the UK and Ireland. Since our last newsletter,
and due to the Christmas and New Year breaks, there has only been one tournament held. That was the January
Sales Poker Festival at the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton, which ran from January 12th to 18th.
Results from Brighton
Full results for Brighton can be found here and there
were many small buy-in events, ranging from £25 to £50. In this newsletter I'll be looking at some of the larger buy-in events.
On January 16th, the £100+£5 No Limit Hold'em tournament took place. 73 entries created a prize pool of £19,200. Roy "The Boy" Brindley
got his 2004 off to a good start, with a fine win here. Roy pocketed £7,680 for his efforts. That should cover the Christmas expenses. R
Stevens was runner-up with £3,840 and P Whyman took home £2,400 in third.
  The
next day saw the start of the Main Event at the Rendezvous, which was the 2 day No Limit Texas Hold'em tournament. 76 players paid the £250+£10
entry, so there was £39,000 to play for. T Dobson went on to win this event, and that paid £15,600. Second place and $7,800 went to J Grech
with G Duval picking up £4,875 in third.
The Rendezvous wrapped up their January Sales Festival with a £100+£10 Pot Limit 7-Card Stud game. 47 players turned up for this one creating
a prize pool of £10,700. J Grech finished off a fine week by placing in the money again, this time in first place with £4,280. Runner-up
with £2,140 was K Strupinski, and third place and £1,335 went to J Hull.
Congratulations to all the winners in Brighton and a big thank you to Sinead Creely and the staff at the Rendezvous for providing us with
the results in such a timely manner.
News from Australia
It is
not very often I get to write about events in Australia, as David Parlor covers action there excellently for us. But I had to congratulate
the contingent of UK players who made the long journey to the Crown Casino in Melbourne for the 2004
Australasian Poker Championship, and the great performances they had. "Mad" Marty Wilson won the first event, winning AUD$15,575, runner
up was Peter Costa with AUD$11,185 and Barny Boatman of the
Hendon Mob came in third with AUD$5,858. The top 3 places all going to UK players. Howard Plant came runner-up in the AUD$450+$50 Limit
Omaha event, good for AUD$8,327. Peter Costa had another good money finish, coming second in the AUD$1,500+$100 Limit Hold'em Event. That
was worth AUD$23,625 to him. He also came second in the AUD$2000+$100 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo event, proving his overall poker abilities are not
limited to one or two games. That second place finish earned him AUD$25,080. Dave Colclough picked up AUD$15,120 for his fourth place finish
in the AUD$1,000+$100 Pot Limit Hold'em event. Lucy Rokach , who won the Pot Limit Omaha in Australia last year, won AUD$20,400 for her
fourth place finish in the AUD$5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event.
But the
big news was the outstanding win by Tony Bloom, in the 3 Day AUD$10,000+$300 No Limit Hold'em Event. Tony won a whopping AUD$426,500 for
his efforts. Outstanding Tony! So for the second year running, the Australasian title is coming back to the UK.
Well played all of the UK players in Melbourne.
Upcoming Events
Events get under way at the Grosvenor Luton this week, when they host the Grand
Challenge running from the 19th until the 25th of January. The Main Event will be a £750+£25 two day No Limit Hold'em tournament, starting
on the 24th.
Looking ahead to February and March, the Grosvenor Walsall will host the Midlands Medley, running from February 23rd to 28th. We expect
to have the final schedule for Walsall by end of this month, so please check back then.
And of course in March we will see the eagerly anticipated British
Open at the Vic in London, for which we already have the schedule. Running from March 15th to 20th, the highlight there will be the
£1,250+£25 two day, No Limit Hold'em tournament.
Good luck to all our players travelling to Paris next month also, for the Euro Finals of Poker. I hope to be writing about some of their
victories in my next newsletter.
Wishing you all every success in 2004. Until next time, take care

Crown Australasian Championships
Reported by Chris Newton
As I write it is Chinese New Year - The new year being the Year of the Monkey. Well at the CROWN Casino 7th Annual Poker Championships
just completed, with a few notable exceptions, it was the year of the Youngsters.
A total of twelve events were played this year with all records set in previous years for numbers and pools being surpassed.
The
"youngsters" arrived to play in all events from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, England, USA and most significantly Perth and Sydney in
Australia. The Internet champion Eric Sangstom ( ERIC123) and Per-Werner Swennson made the long trip to try their hand at Oz poker, tournament
and live-action. Their combined ages are less than mine - and I'm not that old!!
The
opening event a $100 NL HE with rebuys attracted 188 starters - hailed as record. Arul Thillai made a minor placing in this event, he managed
a final table in event two and won the third event - and also secured a free seat in the main event for taking an unsurpassable lead in
a points competition covering the first four events.
The
notable multiple winner was none other than Andy Glazer "Poker Pundit" who had two wins under his belt by the time the 7th event was complete.
The Heads Up $5000 32 player event provided a slowing of pace and after preliminary rounds the American Champion Layne Flack faced off
against Per-Werner Swennson. I took some time on the Saturday to watch Layne in the early rounds and he seemed to be in fine "talking" form.
However I guess he hadn't read the script and it was Per who was hailed as the winner. Celebrations included constant raises in the live
pot-limit holdem game later in the evening - frequently without his cards being peeked at until the river.
The youngster in the main event was Han Luu an ex-dealer from Perth, Australia, he followed up a very good third in the $1000 Pot-Limit
Holdem event with a magnificent 8th in the $10,000 NL HE event.

The final three in the Main event were Tony Bloom ( England ) Jesse Jones ( USA) and Kenna James (USA) , truly any of the three could have
won -all three playing completely different styles over the two previous days I had watched them.
Well most of the big money went overseas this year so it's back to the Internet and the CROWN weekly tournaments for me to see if I can
arrest this serious balance of payments shift.
Thank you to all those who made the long plane trips - hope you feel the desire to do so again next year.

Poker
Down Under
Reported by David Parlor
The Australasian Poker Championship at Crown Casino
has reached its conclusion with Tony Bloom from the UK being declared the winner of the main event. The final hand against Jesse Jones from
the USA saw Jesse's pre flop lead with pocket Kings destroyed when he called in the small blind allowing Tony to see a free flop. With a
flop of 3s3h7d, Tony's K3 became a huge favourite over Jesse who had only slightly less in chips. Turn and river cards did not help and
a new Australasian Poker Champion was declared for 2004. Tony collected over $400,000 for his efforts.
 A
number of notable absences from some very well known players were evident on the final table. Phil Helmuth, Andy Glazer and Layne Flack
were among these players who did not make the money after publicly declaring their expectations. Andy did however prove himself earlier
in the week taking out the Seven-Card Stud and Pot Limit Holdem titles. The Pot-Limit Holdem being the most impressive, having only arrived
in the country hours earlier.
Another new star of the Championship was Per-Werner Swennson who was intimidated by nobody on his way to being declared the Head-Up champion
from a 32-player field, collecting $64,000. This gentleman was so keen to play Heads-Up an impromptu Heads-Up tournament was organised one
afternoon, with Per-Werner securing second in the eight player field.
Cash games throughout the week were many and varied with regular small games and several pot limit games dominated mostly buy Interstate
and International players. The regular big Omaha game was popular with many of the Sydney players, playing in this game until the small
hours every night.
The next event on the Australasian calendar is The New
Zealand Poker Championship scheduled for March. While this event does not boast huge prizepools or larger numbers of entries it is one
of the most enjoyable weeks for players in this part of the world every year. Numbers are limited for all events, so early registration
is recommended. Events range in entry fee from $225 to $600 and a $50 satellite for the main event to begin the Championship on March 13.
