In America
Tim Kopp of PokerPages writes about Poker in America
See the video clips of the World
Poker Open
Hello again everybody and welcome back to Poker in America. Another month has passed and it's now officially springtime. Poker is about
to heat up once again as the words 'World Series of Poker' start to put a twinkle in every pro and aspiring amateur's eye as we head
into April. But lets not get too ahead of ourselves, March has been a busy month and there's been no shortage of players trying to hit it
big on the tournament circuit.
L.A. Poker Classic
When we
last left off, players were heading for the seats for the $10,000 WPT Main
Event at the L.A Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino
in Los Angles California. In the 21 events leading up to the main event the Commerce broke attendance records in almost every event, and
hoped there would be more of the same in the Main Event. Day 1 of this 4-day event started with a bang, with 382 players each handing over
their $10,000 entry fee and creating a prize pool of almost $4 Million dollars ($3,820,000). Andrew Bloch jumped out to an early lead finishing
day 1 with just under 60,000 in chips, but with 3 days to go Andrew knew better than anyone, there was a lot of work to do as 179 players
still remained.
Day 2 Came to a close with only 3 tables and 27 players left in the hunt. At table 1, Bill Gazes found himself on top of the field as chip
leader with 240,900 in chips. His closest threat was Bill Baxter, right behind him at table 3 with 240,700 chips.
In Day 3, play wouldn't stop until there were only 6 players left. Those lucky 6 would return to play the final in front of the TV audience
for their shot at the $1,399,135 first place prize. It turned out to be a marathon session to get there. It took 13 hours for the final
player, J.C. Tran, to be eliminated. Don't feel too bad for J.C. though; for 7th place he took home a crisp $94,540.
Finally
it was the day everyone had been waiting for, the final table. 6 players, David Benyamine, Bill Gazes, Vinny Vinh, Antonio Esfandiari, Adam
Schoenfeld, and Mike Keohan took their seats. It didn't take long to get play heads up. When Mike Keohan busted out in third place, Vinny
Vinh and Esfandiari squared off mono-y-mono for the 1.3 million dollar prize. There were some great WPT TV moments in this heads up match.
As Max Shapiro reports, "On hand 35, Esfandiari raised to 60k, Vinh re-raised 110 more and Antonio moved in for 437k. As Vinh pondered and
fiddled with his chips, a crowd of Esfandiari partisans yelled for a clock. When Vinh finally folded, Esfandiari showed 10d-7d and Vinh
was visibly upset. "Vinny's on tilt!" the crowd began to chant. Imagine a Masters golf tournament with the crowd yelling, "Tiger's on tilt!".
Not too long after Esfandiari, holding a substantial chip lead, looked down to pocket Aces, and much to his pleasure and surprise Vinh came
right at him with all his chips. Esfandiari beat him to the pot with a quick call and it was a wrap shortly there after when the Aces held
up. Fans of the WPT telecasts might remember Esfandiari from season 1 when the magician turned poker pro came up short but showed pro Phil
Hellmuth a thing or two about messing with an illusionist at the poker table. I'm sure we'll be seeing Antonio at the WSOP next month with
some of that hard earned $1,399,135. Congratulations to all the participants and all the money finishers in what was another great L.A Poker
Classic.
Bay 101 Shooting Stars
March started out where February left off with the conclusion of Bay 101's 2004 Shooting
Star Tournament. Dozens of poker's top personalities were invited to the event to all duke it out in a 6 event poker showdown. Amateurs
were also encouraged to come to play against some of their heroes and to talk poker with some of the brightest stars in the game. As an
added bonus for the amateurs and novices, bounties were awarded for anyone knocking out one of the many stars from the tournament. If that
wasn't enough, the winners of every event would be getting a seat to an event in the 2004 WSOP. Let's take a look at how things went down
at Bay 101.
Event 1 kicked
things off with a $500 buy-in Hold'em Shootout. 100 players tried their luck but it was Stan Ho a pro from San Francisco, CA who would take
the spoils. For his win Stan took home $17,000 that included a $2,000 No Limit Seat to the 2004 WSOP.
In Event
2 we had Limit Hold'em, again for $500. Attendance was up for event 2 as 51 more players sat down than in the previous day's event. "The
Master" Men Nguyen lived up to the nick name he got so many years ago as he rolled over the final table and his heads up opponent Scotty
Warbucks. Included in the $25,000 prize for 1st place, Men also picked up a free seat to the $2,000 Limit Hold'em WSOP 2004 event. Men who
plays in almost ever WSOP even was very pleased to get the prize, and who wouldn't be.
The following
day in Event 3 we had increased buy-ins and a 2-day event. For $1,500 per player the top 3 finishers would all win a seat into the Main
Event at the 2004 WSOP. After 2 days of heated battle the 3 lucky players were Rich Don (3rd place and $22,640), Ravi Udayakumar (2nd place
and $45,290), and William Vo (1st place and $74,740). All 3 were grinning ear to ear all the way to the cage.
Next we
had Event 4 and some Omaha Hi/Lo for $500 a chair. 148 players took a crack at 1st place and the $1,500 Omaha seat at this year's WSOP.
Another pro and familiar face at WSOP final tables, "Miami" John Cernuto would take first along with the WSOP seat, $24,000.
Event 5
was the following day and the game was $1,000 Limit Hold'em. 157 players started but it was Andy Gamboa (3rd and $16,500), David "The Dragon"
Phan (2nd and $31,400), and James Yoo (1st and $51,000) who would take the majority of the prize pool and the 3 $2,000 limit Hold'em seats
that were up for grabs.
Next
it was time for the main event. For $5,000 and spanned over 3 days. The poker stars were out in full force and along with a $25,000 seat
to the WPT finals, first place would pay $360,000. Trying to prove his 2003 WSOP victory wasn't a fluke, Chris Moneymaker looked as if he
was going to win this event until play got down to the final 2 players. Squaring off against on the best in the business Moneymaker had
to get through Phil Gordon if he thought he was going to take first. Showing that skill sometimes does beat luck, Gordon made fairly quick
work of last year's champ. The charismatic Ivey leaguer, Phil Gordon, co-host of Celebrity Poker, ensures himself a seat in the WPT at the
Bellagio later this year. Be sure to watch the conclusion to this great event in the WPT Season 2 on the Travel Channel.
Winning O' the Green
The other big event running in March is the Bicycle Casino yearly favorite Winning
O' the Green. This event has a little something for every one with buy-ins ranging as low as $50 for cheap skates like me, and for the
high rollers, there was plenty of $500 and $1,000 buy in events to keep everyone happy. We pick up coverage in event 10, the first of the
$300 buy in events.
In a tournament that had been breaking attendance records for the casino, event 10 Limit Hold'em was no different. 243 players combined
for $72,900 in total prize money. Ellix Powers from Los Angeles, CA would take first and a nice $27,335. Ellix has been playing poker for
almost 30 years and remained vague about his other interests and background referring to himself as "just a bum" more than once in the post
tourney interview.
Next up was 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo in event 11. 120 players paid the $300 for their seats and California's best Stud players squared off for
a day of pokers oldest game. Dr Kwang Young of Winnetka, CA was the victor picking up $14,400 for his efforts. Dr. Kwang favors stud eight
or better, and has been playing in the $75-$150 game at Hollywood Park, but lately has been studying No Limit Hold'em. He estimates he's
played only six tournaments overall, ending in the money each time, including a win in a Stud Hi-Lo event at Winnin' o' the Green six years
ago.
The following day it was my favorite tourney game, Pot Limit Hold'em and Event 12. With another $300 buy-in only 160 players decided to
try their luck. Ellix "Just a Bum" Powers, winner of event 10 was back in the money. Not only that he found himself heads up against Jim
Miller for first place. In a seesaw match, Ellix took 1st place yet again and added another $19,200 to his winnings from event 10.
Next it was back to everyone's favorite, No Limit Hold'em. Tournament directors figured to see more players for this event and they were
right on the money as per usual as 357 players took their seats and created the event's 1st prize pool over $100,000. Franco Brunetti, a
real estate developer from California and relatively new to tournaments won his 1st tournament. It was a hefty win too, as for 1st place
Franco took home $40,160 for his stellar final table play.
Event 14 was next and we were back to 7-Card Stud. This time however it was high only. Only 71 players for this event, though that's not
to say it wasn't a good day for poker. Charles Brahmi a full time player and ex-WSOP Limit Hold'em champ visiting from Ventnor, New Jersey
led the pack most of the day and eventually took home the $8,520 for first place.
Onwards
we go to event 15 Omaha Hi/Lo, again for the $300 buy-in. Omaha ninja and Alabama Native, Robert Turner sneaked into 1st place to secure
the win of $14,640. Turner, no stranger to the winner's circle adds to his already impressive record of Tournament wins. In his long tournament
career, Turner has racked up four best all-arounds, six titles at Amarillo Slim's Super Bowl, including two back to back, four at the Commerce
and about 25 at the Bike. Well done again Robert!
The following day it was back to Limit Hold'em in event 16, though this time, with multiple rebuys, ensuring a big payday for the winner.
153 players re-bought 137 times to jack the prize pool to just under $90,000. Brett Jungblut eventually outlasted everyone else to pick
up a cold $34,800. "Winning is more important to me than the money," he said after the win. After fulfilling his promise to his parents
to get his business degree, he began playing professionally seven years ago.
Event 17 was the last of the $300 buy in events. In this No Limit Hold'em event with re-buys the $100,000 guarantee was shattered as 174
players re-bought 348 times to inflate the prize pool to $186,600. Event 17 ended without a hand played at the final table when the 10 finalists
agreed to a chip-count deal that left local pro and chip leader John Hoang as the winner.
Going into the home stretch, we started the $500 buy-in events in event 18. Perhaps it's all the high profile events that have already been
played this year, but this event only drew 97 players. Less that what the casino had hoped for. Another deal was made for the 9 players
slated for the final table, but a late objection forced play. However it was short lived; only 4 hands were played before all the remaining
players finally settled on a new deal. Chip leader/mystery man Joe Grew took first and $19,400.
Next up was event 19 and the $500 buy in Mixed game ½ Omaha - ½ 7 card stud. 64 players took their seats and Rocky Enciso
took first and $12,300 for his time. Rocky had appeared in 6 final tables in this year's WOG and finally was able to make the push to the
winner circle. It must have felt great to have finally broken the ice.
Event 20 hoped to liven up the recently dry prize pools with another dose of No Limit Hold'em. With 226 players and a prize pool of $113,000
event 20 did just that. Eric Arreca, a fairly new student to the game but no stranger to the Bike won his first Bike tournament and picked
up a nifty $42,375 for his fine effort.
By the time this makes it past editing, players should be starting to get settled for the main event so be sure to check PokerPages for
daily updates from the Bike and check back Next month to see how it all played out.

In Europe
Kevin Pratt of PokerPages writes about Poker in Europe
The Vienna Spring Poker Festival
The
Vienna Spring Poker Festival at the Concord Card Casino Austria was the main event in Europe over the last month with the highlight
being the European World Series of Poker Trial played over 3 days. With 109 entries and a first prize of €80,000 this was going to be a
tough tournament to win as with the slow structure similar to the WSOP main event the best players had plenty of time to accumulate chips.
Peter Roche from Ireland emerged the winner after a fairly lean spell for him since his last major win at Luton back in 2001. Peter was
11th in the first ever Poker Million in the Isle of Man, and was also 7th in the European Championship No Limit Hold'em at the Aviation
also in 2001. 2nd place in the trial went to Valeri Ilikyan from Russia who followed this up with 2nd in the British Open at the Vic a couple
of weeks after. 3rd place went to Sascha Firth from Germany.
 Event
1 at the Concord went to Turk Omer who picked up nearly €13,000 for winning the €80 Limit Hold'em from a field of 166 entries
Bernard Reither from Austria captured event 2 €100 Pot Limit Omaha and €7,244 for his first major European success. Bernard has been placed
a few times in Austria but 3rd was his best previous result in 2001 at Veldon.
 Now
Bosnia is not a country associated much with poker but Ignaz Svijanov managed to give the country something to cheer about by winning event
3 €100 Pot Limit Hold'em from 98 other hopeful starters. Ignaz picked up just under €10,000 in a final dominated by the eastern Europeans.
The first No Limit Tournament €150 Hold'em was won by Irishman Mick McCloskey with Turks coming 2nd and 3rd. Mick got €13,500 for his efforts
and has previously been placed in a few European events namely 3rd in the €1,000 No Limit Hold'em in Barcelona 2003.
 Johann
Vlasits from Austria outperformed a field of 82 in winning the €500 No Limit Hold'em taking a first prize of €14,414 from Ayhan Alsancak
from turkey again in second and Brit Ross Boatman in third.
Another Austrian Alfred Pichler won the €300 No Limit Hold'em and €8,436 and Richard Gryko from Britain won the €300 Pot Limit Omaha scooping
€14,516 for his first ever European success. Well-done Richard.
 John
Duthie who shocked all in becoming the first winner of the Poker Million was back to winning ways in the €300 No Limit Hold'em. John has
had a number of places since the famous £1,000,000 win, most notably a second in last years World Heads Up Championship to Mike Sexton
and I am sure there is more to come from the player who astounded the Americans with his masterful display at the Poker Million.
 Regular
tournament player and part time plastic surgeon Michael Keiner won the €1,000 No Limit Hold'em a victory for one of the nice guys. Michael
picked up €33,212 for the 8 hour victory but surely could have earned more doing a nose job?
The final event was the €400 Limit Stud which fell to a man who has a 100% record when making the final table in Europe K.Gerhard. Gerhard
won €9101 and previously had 2 wins in 2003 at the Concord in his only 2 final appearances. He is a man to be feared if you see him at a
final table with you.

Until next time good luck wherever you play.

Andrew Lacey of the PokerPages Team writes about poker in the UK.
Hello again and welcome to our monthly newsletter, covering the action in the UK and Ireland, and the results of our players overseas.
Later I will be looking ahead to this month's main event, The
British Open at The Grosvenor Victoria in London and taking a look at how the UK and Irish players have faired on their travels.
Firstly to The Midlands Medley played at the Grosvenor
Casino, Walsall from 23rd to 29th February.
The first event was a £250 Pot Limit Hold'em tournament and with 123 entries and a further 92 re-buys the prizepool was boosted to a healthy
£53,750. First place with a prize of £9,180 went to P. Hallan with I Yousif second and Osman Mustanogliu third taking home £8,450 and £8,085
respectively.
Event 2 was a £100 Mixed Pot Limit Omaha/Hold'em with a final prizepool of £23,800 made up of 100 entries and 138 re-buys. As in the first
event a deal was cut at the final table with first place and a prize of £7,000 going to M.Z. Hussain. Second place went to A. Sivaguru and
third placed was T. Jugpal, each of whom took home £5,425 for their efforts.
Dave
Ulliott won Event 3, £100 Pot Limit Omaha. With 85 entries and 92 re-buys the prizepool rose to £17,700. "Devilfish" took home £8,000 for
his first place, T. Bolton was rewarded £3,500 for second and K. Zarandi £1,770 for third.
A deal
was also cut at the final table of Event 4, £500 No Limit Hold'em played over two days with a total prizepool of £83,000. First place and
the no small matter of £21,200 went to Liam Flood, I Yousif was second (to add to his second place in Event 1) and Ash Pervaiz third each
of them earning a healthy £19,000 for their troubles
For Event 5 it was again time for some Omaha with a £250 Pot Limit Tournament. 59 players boosted the prizepool to £27,700 with 52 re-buys.
Theo Tsouviallaris earned £9,400 for his first place with £6,200 going to W Edgington for second and £4,200 to M. Z. Hussain for third.
On
Saturday February 28th it was time for the Main Event. This was £1,000
No Limit Hold'em played over 2 days with a prizepool of £111,000. Our congratulations go to Paul Maxfield on his victory with a first prize
of £40,700. W Shervington came in second for £31,500 and Dave Ulliott was once again in the money earning £11,100 for his third place.
The Midlands Medley then wound down with some Pot Limit Hold'em with a £100 buy-in. A. Koresh took first place and £7,294 from the £19,900
prizepool. A Sivaguru was second, good for £5,256 and V. Sarkissian took £1,900 for third.
Our congratulations go out to all the winners and to all the staff at The Walsall Grosvenor for putting on such a well run event.
Now to this month's main feature, The British Open

getting £15,036 for his second place and R Kennedy £9,308 for third. I can't leave this event without saying congratulations to our very
own Mark Napolitano. The co-founder of PokerPages and PokerSchool Online finished fourth picking up £5,728. This event was also a designated
PSO Live Tour Stop and congratulations goes to Ironside who was the highest placing PokerSchoolOnline member and won a seat in the Live
Tour Grand Final in January 2005 where the winner receives a $25,000 Sponsorship seat to the WPT Championship event at the Bellagio.
Event
2 was a £200 Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo with 98 entries and 122 re-buys boosting the prizepool to £44,000. Chris Bjorin led the field at the
start of the final table with 203, 000 in chips. Ross Boatman was lying second with 98,000 and with the lowest stack being 39,000 there
was still everything to play for. Ross Boatman eventually came through to take first place and a prize of £16,720. I. Turner came second
and A. Antonio third taking home £8,800 and £5,720 respectively.
73 players
entered Event 3, £500 Pot Limit 7-Card Stud, taking the total prizepool to £36,500. The first prize of £13,680 went to M. Kheradmand, with
second place and £7,560 going to M. Cook, while third place went to B. Cheravambous who took home £4,680.
Event
4 was £750 No Limit Hold'em with a total prizepool of £117,750 from 157 entries. Going into the final two tables, Keith Hawkins held the
chip lead with 135,200 with de Bouvere Gilbert lying second with 87,800. But it was John Kabbaj who came through to claim the first prize
of £45,000. David Mehrand came through the field to take second place and £24,034 while Gibert de Bouvere managed to hold on to his chips
to take home £13,283 for third.
On Friday it was time for some Pot Limit Omaha with the £500 buy in event. 96 entries saw the prizepool go up to £48,000. Going into the
final table the leading group were level pegging, with Marty Wilson just edging it with 140,000 to Emanuelle Sebag's 132,000 and Phillipe
Marmorstein in third with 120,000.
But Emanuelle managed to pip "Mad" Marty to the first prize of £27,300. Marty took home £14,700 and M. Winter came through to take third
and £8,400 after lying seventh overnight.
And so to the Main Event of The British Open 2004. This was a £1,250 No Limit Hold'em Freezeout with 171 entries. Dave "Devilfish"
Ulliott captured the first prize of 90,000 from V. Ilikyan in second and Shah Koumi in third
I would like to make a special mention of Clay Knight, a PokerSchool Online member who made it through to the final table in his first ever
live event paid for with PSO Sponsorship points. Clay picked up £6,510 for 7th place.
Once again, congratulations to all of the winners, and thanks to Joe and the team at the Vic for putting on a great event and getting the
results to us on time.
Our UK and Irish players had a successful time of it at the Vienna Spring Poker Festival.
Peter Roche won the European World Series of Poker event claiming the first prize of 80,000 Euros. Richard Gryko won the 200 Euro Pot Limit
Omaha event and brought home a cool 14,516 Euros. Ireland's Mickey McCluskey claimed the first prize of 13,500 Euros in the 150 Euro No
Limit Hold'em event. And Ross Boatman took third place and 4,674 Euros in the 500 Euro buy in No Limit Hold'em tournament.
Well done to all of them.
Upcoming Events
April is another busy month on the UK and Irish poker scene.
The top attraction is The Irish Open being held at
The Merrion Casino Club in Dublin. This starts on the 8th culminating in the final of the Main Event, a No Limit Hold'em Freezeout with
a 1,500 Euro buy-in, on the 11th. We can expect an attractive prizepool for that.
The Sussex Masters Easter Festival takes place at the
Rendezvous Casino in Brighton from 5th - 12th. The Main Event is the £300 No Limit Hold'em which starts on Easter Sunday and finishes on
the following Monday.
Luton has the Springfest from 12th - 18th. We'll have the schedule for that very shortly.
The Gala Casino in Dundee hosts the Spring Poker Festival from April
28th to May 3rd, which will be looked at closer in the next edition.
We wish all the contestants in those events the very best of luck.
Finally don't forget to look at the new Top European
Players Gallery on PokerPages to see if you are on the list.
Be sure to keep checking the results pages at www.pokerpages.com for all your tournament information.
Until next time, take care...

Guess Who March?
Guess Who? is a competition introduced on PokerPages for BugsysClub.com where you can win $50 in a Real Money account at BugsysClub.
All you have to do to win the Real Money account is to look at the photo to the left and guess which well known poker player it is. Post
