Poker In America
Tim Kopp
Hello again everyone and welcome back for another edition of Poker In America. We're in the dog days of summer and Poker is as hot as ever.
So get on out of the heat, get yourself a rack or two, and take a seat at the table because it's time to play.
There have been many great events this month and attendance is at an all time high in just about every tournament. Yours truly has just
gotten back from Las Vegas and playing in The Orleans Open.
We had a lot of fun meeting many of you and walked away impressed with the card room's staff and the quality of play at The Orleans. Unpacking
will have to wait as I meet my deadline, so lets take a look at how this event played out.
The Orleans Open has been a favorite event for locals, pros, and tourists alike for several years running. This 2 week long event features
some budget minded events as well as some larger buy ins with some big payouts. With $20, $40 and $90 Satellites as well as non-stop side
games kept the Poker Room (ball room) a flurry of activity night and day. We arrived the night before Event #1 and I wish I could say that
I was well rested for the start of play. Captain Morgan and Black Jack saw to it that wouldn't be the case.
Event #1 for the 2004 Orleans Open was Limit Hold'em with a $125 buy-in. The 1009 players for that event was just about 100 less that the
amount they had last years event, but it was a good turn out nonetheless. I couldn't miss and took the 1st 3 pots of the match and went
into the break as chip leader for my table. Returning from the break the poker Gods weren't as kind to me during the next blind levels and
found myself quickly short stacked finally busting out right around 200th. That was okay by me as it was the most players I'd ever been
up against and I got within the top 20%, which was what I was hoping for going into play. For Daryl Goldberg though, the day was a bit more
fruitful. After playing for a little over 14 hours Daryl found himself as the last man standing and collected $35,235.
Next up was Event #2 and Limit Omaha Hi/Lo. Not being an Omaha player, I decided to focus on side games and 2nd chance events, satellites
and cash games until Event 4. However, a very nice 501 players did decide to try their luck in the Omaha Match, creating a $48,595 Prize
pool. Local Pro and no stranger to final tables, Chris
Grigorian turned his $125 into a "quick" $17,500 taking 1st Place after knocking out Luis Jaikel.
The following day was the $125 7-Card Stud Match and Event #3. A modest 312 players showed up for poker's oldest game and created a $312
prize pool. Anyone who's followed the Tournament circuit has probably come across Salah Levy in some manner or another. Salah, a very boisterous
and animated player generally always has something to say about anything, weather you care to hear it or not. Being such well-liked player
Salah must have been able to finagle a buy in or two from some of his friends and fellow pros. Overheard in a $4-$8 side game as the 7-Stud
final table seating was taking place:
Player: "I've got 10% of Levy and he's chip leader"
Dealer: "Oh yeah? I think I saw him changing into his running shoes during the break."
Levy did go on to win the match and in a scene reminiscent of the Gallery following Tiger Woods down the fairway of the 18th hole at the
Masters, as Salah left the tournament a crowd promptly nipped at his heels. All that could be heard from Levy was "not tonight! not tonight!"
Levy won $9,680 and the need for cooperate sponsorship for tournament players continues.
Next up it was Event #4 and the $230 No Limit Hold 'Em (plus 1 $200 rebuy). Event 4 was also a PSO Live Tour Event and PokerSchoolOnline
was well represented. I believe the last count was 38 members of PokerSchoolOnline attended the event out of the 430 total players. Even
more impressive was that 2 members (David Ritter 3rd place, Charles Gudaitis 6th place) made the final table. It's becoming more and more
evident that PokerSchool is the place to practice and play if you want to improve your game. Yours truly, well, fellow PokerSchooler and
my Roommate for the trip, TJ Ramsey knocked me out around 160th place when my JJ fell behind on the River to TJ's Ace-King. So it goes.
Of the 430 players there was 314 rebuys making a total $150,155 prize pool. Kannon Richards from Billings, Montana took 1st place and $54,055.
The following day we had Event #5 and Limit Hold 'Em, another $230 buy-in match. 360 players were able to create a $72,200 prize pool.
Robert Clauston of Richmond, BC took 1st and $26,714
The next day was the last day of my Trip to the Orleans Open and the Event of the day was unfortunately one I was I couldn't play due to
age restrictions. It was Event #6: "The Seniors" No Limit Hold 'Em, for players 55 years of age and older. Jack "Back To
Back" Duncan beat out the 176 other players in this no limit event to collect a crisp $12,630. There was 559 Rebuys and a $35,200 total
Prize pool.
The Orleans Open is still currently running and there's still a chance to win or buy a seat for the main Event on July 25th at noon the
$1,060 buy in No Limit Hold 'Em Championship. Until then, you can check on the daily results for the Orleans, here.
Looking ahead to the Rest of this month and into August be sure to free up your calendars for these great events:

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt
The main event in Europe since the last newsletter just completed is Rendevous a Paris at the Aviation Club de France, Europe's only World
Poker Tour Event.
With a record field of 205, over double last year, and including all the top Europeans and some big names from the USA this was a real
success for the Aviation.
Day one saw a familiar name at the head of affairs namely Sam
Farha who came second in the 2003 WSOP to Chris
Moneymaker. Sam was closely followed by previous WPT winners Gus
Hansen and David Benyamine.
Day 2 saw Farha slip down to 7th place as we had a new leader in Peter
Roche. Peter as many of you will remember was the winner of the WSOP trial in Vienna earlier in the year so he was expecting to last
the distance in this WPT event.
After playing down on Day 3 to 6 players we were left with some big European names such as Ben
Roberts and Surinder
Sunar, Dave
Colclough and chip leader Peter
Roche. The other two making up the final table were Aussie Tony
G and American Jim Overman.
I have just time to report that Surinder
Sunar is the 1st Season 3 World Poker Tour winner beating Tony
G from Australia to take the 1st prize of €679,860. Final hand saw a low stacked Tony G call all in with King 3 against Surinder's
Ace 7 and with no help from the board Surinder was the champion.
Prolific Aviation winner Dan
Uzan picked up €32,400 in winning the €1,000 Omaha Hi/Lo from Serge
Kammerer of France. Some great names contested the $3,000 Omaha Cup with Dave
Colclough finishing 3rd after winning the British Open the week before. Patrick
Bruel a previous WSOP bracelet winner came second and top London cash player Ben
Roberts showed he can adapt to tournaments in winning €82,400.
The other big event at the aviation was the €5,000 Limit Hold'em which drew only 25 players but went to another big London cash player in
Ali Sarkeshik €59,300.
Ali is hitting a bit of tournament form lately with his globetrotting as he also won the €500 Pot Limit Omaha at the LA Poker Classic in
February.
Other winners at the Aviation were Jean
Michel Henrion €50 Dealers Choice (€3,280), Brian
Smith €50 5 Card Omaha €3,860, Nick
Roman €50 Hold'em €5,420, Antoine
Dorin €50 Hold'em €2,550, Jonathan
Fhal €200 Pot Limit Omaha €9,580, Jean
Marc Delvigne €500 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo €9,800, Sami
Torbey €500 Pot Limit Hold'em €16,500 and Jari
Hautala €2,500 No Limit Hold'em €74,800.
Congratulations to all the winners at the Aviation and especially the staff for providing us with the results and photos so quic. Check

Poker in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey
Hello again. Since my last newsletter there were two major events held in the UK and Ireland. First up was the eagerly anticipated World
Poker Championship at the Merrion in Dublin. After speaking to them, they have asked that we not publish the results, as it is being televised
in August. I respect that decision. Although many people know who won the event, I will wait until next month before I disclose the winners.
June 28th to July 4th saw the very popular European Championships
at the Vic on London. This event always attracts Europe's finest players, in addition to many other top players from around the world. The
first tournament was the £200+£20 Pot Limit Hold'em event that attracted 170 entries. After 210 re-buys the prize pool stood
at £76,000. A Nung emerged victorious in this event, winning £26,980 in first place, fighting off the popular journalist Vicky
Coren in second place. Vicky won £14,910 for her efforts. Lawrence Windish picked up £9,230 in third place.
Entry stakes jumped to £500+£25 for event number two, another Pot Limit Hold'em event. 109 players played in this game, and there were
89 re-buys creating a prize pool of £99,000. German player David Mehrmand came out on top in this one winning the £34,390 first place prize.
E Sebag settled for £19,005 in runners-up spot, with Jonathan Cooke winning £11,763 in third place.
It was time for some Omaha now, and 85 players turned up for the £200+£20 event. The prize pool was £44,800 after 139 re-buys. World-class
player Surinder Sunar
proved his class yet again, taking this one down. He took home £17,024. In second place was Sonny Nijran with £8,960. Third place and £5,824
went to P Madden.
Entry stakes jumped to £750+£25 for the No Limit Hold'em event. One of the best female players in the world, in my opinion, Lucy
Rokach continued her winning ways. The former school teacher's first place finish was worth a cool £50,000 of the £127,500 prize pool.
M Dunlevy won £25,840 in second spot, and Pippa Flanders won £14,280 in third.
Back to some more Omaha. This time it was a £500+£25 tournament. 71 runners and 58 re-buys created a prize pool of £64,500. Brian Johnson
fought off top professional Barny
Boatman heads-up to win the £24,320 first place prize. Barny picked up £13,440 and P King came in third, winning £8,320.
Time for the Main Event now, the £2,000+£30 No Limit Hold'em Championship, where first prize would be a cool £100,000. Another top player,
Dave Colclough
was the winner here, proving his quality yet again. David Mehrmand, winner of the £500+£25 Pot Limit Hold'em event had to settle for second
this time, but that was good for £58,800. Third place and £30,870 went to Paul Alterman.
The Vic wrapped things up with an Omaha Hi/Lo event, with a buy-in of £200+£20. £54 players and 79 re-buys put £26,600 in the prize pool.
The winner was I Turner, and first place paid £10,108. Second place and £5,320 went to E Dalby. Teddy
Tuil from Israel won £3,458 in third place.
Our congratulations go to all the winners in the Vic.
Upcoming Events
As I write, action has just gotten underway at the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton, who are staging the Summer
Breeze Festival With events ranging in buy-in from £50 to £500 it is sure to attract a lot of players. The Main Event will be held on
July 24th, and will be a £500+£25 No Limit Hold'em tournament. We wish Sinead, and all the staff at the Rendezvous every success with their
festival.
The end of July sees action in Ireland, at the Macau Sporting Club where the Irish
Classic will be staged in Cork City. The Macau Sporting Club recently moved from Perry Street to their new venue at 16 Patrick's Quay.
There are three events on offer, with the Main Event being a €500+€30 No Limit Hold'em tournament, held over 2 days. We also wish
the Macau Sporting Club, as one of the newer card rooms on the scene, every success with the Irish Classic. If you haven't been to Cork
City before you should try it. It is a wonderful city and, when you are away from the tables, you will have no shortage of things to do
and see. I highly recommend it.
As always, we will be bringing you all the results here at PokerPages. Good luck to you all if you're playing in any of the events.
Until next time, take care...
Andrew Lacey

Poker Down Under
David Parlor
The focus for Poker in Australia this month is at Crown Casino where regular satellites are being held for the upcoming Victorian
Poker Championship. Every Sunday afternoon at 1pm a Super Satellite with a selection of prize packages for this championship will be
held in the Crown Poker Room.
The first two weeks has seen over $12 000 in tournament entries won by players with nine players in week one and ten in week two securing
seats in August. Entry fees to the satellites are set at a low $55 with $25 rebuys and add-on. Prizes are then broken down into $690 packages
for the Vic Champs, and awarded to the highest finishing players.
I would encourage non-local players intending on participating in August's tournaments to secure accommodation early, as this week is looking
very good at present and will attract some large numbers to the low buy-in events. A special Poker rate is available at both of Crown Casino's
hotels until seven days prior to the first tournament.
To book Crown Towers call (03) 9292 6868 and ask for group reservations or email hotel_groups@crownltd.com.au. Quote POKERVICTOWERS to receive
special rate of $220pn Sun to Thurs and $250pn Friday & Saturday.
To book Crown Promenade call (03) 9292 6688 and ask for group reservations or email hotelgroups@crownpromenade.com.au. Quote POKERVICPROMENADE
to receive special rate of $154pn.
Minimum three night booking applies.
The increased popularity in Poker recently may be attributable to the increased television coverage it is currently enjoying. While this
has had an effect in the UK and USA, Australia is finally starting to see the rewards of promoting this fascinating game. Last Saturday
saw the WPT event at Bellagio televised on Channel Ten at around 11pm. Without any promotion of this event being shown, many new players
at Crown Casino have commented to me that they saw the program and are interested in learning Hold'em.
SBS and Foxtel have also shown poker events recently and have attracted players to this game in Australia. I hope that these stations continue
to promote Poker and realise that they are attracting an audience. A suggestion was recently made on an Australian Poker website that players
communicate their appreciation to the stations and I would encourage this as a means to grow Poker in Australia.
