Poker In America
Sharla Lehrmann
Not only is the sun raging this summer, but poker all over America has hit record highs and the heat is on.
The PSO invitational tournaments are a huge success this summer with many of the members giving it their best to win that coveted $25,000
seat to the WPT. The Legends of poker has made it through the grueling heat for nearly a month now, starting on July 28th and making its
way into the last days of August capping off the gala event with a four day $5000 entry for a televised WPT event.
Eli Elezra of Henderson,
NV ran his flag up the winners pole for a huge win at the Mirage Poker Showdowns Championship No Limit event. The month of August
began with a flurry with many great players and even a well know entertainer, Gabe Kaplan playing this event. The tournament tables were
teeming with 281 players and $2,725,200 in prize money. Eli loaded up his pockets with $1,024,574 including a $25,500 seat in the WPT Final
Championship Event at the Bellagio. Lee
Watkinson pulled down $513,038 with Gabe Kaplan picking up $256,519 for third. Following closely behind were the fourth and fifth place
winners, past WSOP champions, John
Juanda of Tacoma WA and the infamous Scotty
Nguyen of Marina Del Rey, CA.
The Mid-America Poker Classic at the Horseshoe Casino
in Tunica got off to a swinging start with several $300 and $500 buy in events. Most of us are so happy that this event, along with many
others, provides several days of satellite play which helps the new pups on the block vie for a chance to play with the big dogs. The final
day of the event, August 8th culminated in a great field of formidable opponents. The stage was set with 351 players chomping at the bit
to earn a piece of the $680,940 prize pool. After a grueling daylong battle, the champions were declared. K.D Groves swooped down and picked
up a bundle of cash equaling $190,663 to pad his bankroll for future events. R. Williamson and Dustin Sitar took home 2nd and 3rd for $9,5332
and $47,666. Not a bad days work.
Many, many other casinos around the United States provide players ample opportunities to try their skill a the game of poker. From New
York to California poker has hit this nation by a storm. Past, present and future events are always listed on PokerPages along with the
results from each.
September begins the fall lineup of numerous events around the nation. The
Four Queens will be gearing up for the 19 day stretch of events ranging from $100 to $5000 buy-ins.
The Plaza will be in the middle of their televised Ultimate
Poker Challenge event. These $1000 buy-ins reward winners with cash and points. The lucky winners and high point co get an opportunity
to play for some more big bucks at the end of the 23 day event. The event began August 21st and will play-out on October 31st. Still plenty
of time to grab the opportunity to play one of these super tournaments.
Lots of Womens events scheduled for September, so get your planning going girls. The Four Queens is hosting an event on September
5th for all those stud lovers, Heavenly Hold'em at the
Commerce has a no limit holdem event on September 17th, the Fall
Classic at Canterbury Park has one too on September 25th and Oceans Eleven has an entire event dedicated to their lady players,
The California Ladies' State Poker Championship on September
26th and 27th. On September 25th there will be satellites and an opportunity to learn from two of the greatest and nicest women players
around, Linda Johnson and Jan Fisher.
Congratulations to all the winners in August and may luck cross your path if you are playing an event in September. The world is agog with
poker so dont be left behind. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, and most of all
..stand proud and lets show the rest of the world that
poker deserves front page recognition.

Poker in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey
Greetings once again. There has been plenty of tournament action in the UK and Ireland since my last newsletter, so lets see who has been
taking home the money in these events.
Rendezvous Casino Brighton - Summer Breeze Festival
July 20th saw the first tournament in Brighton, where the Rendezvous kicked events off with a £100+£10 Pot Limit 7-Card Stud
game. 37 entries created £9,800 to play for. Ka Man was the winner here with £3,270. In second place was Ronald Studden with
£1,860 and £1,260 went to third spot Dave Lane.
Pot Limit Hold'em at £100+£10 to enter was next up. Entries doubled to 74 players for this event and £18,900 was in the
prize pool. Congratulations to Peter Abela who came first and won £7,180. Fari Badiemansour won £3,590 for his second place
finish. Carmy Banin won £2,370 in third.
Time for some Omaha/Texas Hold'em mixed games (a round of each) in Brighton. Mixed games are always a test of one's overall poker abilities.
52 players decided to take a shot at this event, and the prize pool was £15,200. Peter Bernsten proved he could play both games, winning
the first prize of £5,770. Fari Badiemansour had another second place finish, this time winning £2,885. £1,930 was Mick
Clark's third place finish prize.
July 23rd saw the £250+£30 Pot Limit Hold'em event get under way, and we had 74 runners and £36,750 to play for. First
place honours and £13,690 went to Michael Shalabi and £6,980 went to J Rogers. £4,610 was the third place prize for Timmy
Man.
The Main Event in Brighton was a £500+£25 No Limit Hold'em tournament and 115 players took part, creating a prize pool of £57,500.
Adam Matusiak battled his way to victory over the rest of the field, and was rewarded £20,760 for his efforts. Piers Whyman was awarded
£10,380 for second, while Ivan Donaghy picked up the third place prize of £6,840.
Our thanks go to Sinead Creely, and the team in Brighton, for getting us the results.
Irish Classic
July 30th saw the start of the Irish Classic at the Macau Sporting Club in Cork City, Ireland. Three events were played out in Cork. The
first was the €150+€15 No Limit Hold'em event which attracted 45 runners and 36 re-buys, creating a prize pool of €17,200.
Paddy O'Connor saw off the rest of the pack to take first and €6,980. Barry McCann won €4,420 in second place, with Cathal Hughes
picking up €2,360 for his third place finish.
The Main Event in Cork was the €500+€30 No Limit Hold'em tournament. 44 runners put €22,000 in the prize pool. Derry O'Sullivan
took this one down, pocketing €8,800. Sheila Moloney was runner-up with €4,800 and €2,900 went to Russ Cawley in third place.
The final event in Cork was yet again a No Limit Hold'em tournament with a €10,000 prize pool. Regular Irish tournament player Roy
Brindley showed his tournament experience by winning this one and the €4,300 first place prize. Steve Jelinek took home €2,400
for second place and Dave Doyle settled for €1,500 in third. I'd like to thank Ken and the team at the Macau for getting us the results.
Scottish Poker Championships
Time to head to Scotland next, to the Gala Maybury in Edinburgh, for the Scottish Poker Championships, which ran from August 2nd to 8th.
First offering was a £100+£10 Pot Limit Hold'em tournament. 108 players made a total of 166 re-buys, so the prize pool stood
at £27,400. A final table deal was struck, awarding the winner, B Winston, £4,800 for first, with £4,700 going to the
second and third place finishers I Wicks and M Rouf.
Time for that crazy game (in my opinion) - 6 card Omaha, with a buy-in also of £100+£10. Fifty players, with nerves of steel,
took part. After 101 re-buys the prize pool stood at £15,100. Another final table deal was struck (I don't blame them when playing
6 card Omaha where anything can happen) and first place and £4,500 went to D DeCruz. D Cheung came second with £4,100 and G
Geary was awarded £3,200 in third.
Roy Brindley, fresh from his win in Cork, decided to give Scotland a try too. His journey was worthwhile as he picked up first place in
the largest event at the Gala - the £500+£40 No Limit Hold'em event. This time Roy picked up £12,000 for his win. Local
player A McIntosh got £9,000 for second place and M Mac got £4,500 for third.
The final event at the Gala with a buy-in of £100 or more was the £250+£25 Pot Limit Texas Hold'em tournament, and attracted
77 entries. £40,500 total was up for grabs in this one. Gareth "The Nugget" Jones, another experienced tournament player
on the circuit, was the champ here, winning £10,900. In another final table deal £6,900 went to Robert Mitchell in second and
£5,900 went to third, fourth and fifth place finishers C Flint, Tony Johnson and Simon Norwab.
Thanks to Ally at the Gala for providing the results to us.
Grosvenor UK Open
Luton was the next venue for the tournament circuit in August, when the Grosvenor Luton held the Grosvenor UK Open. Events got under way
on August 9th with a £100+£10 Pot Limit 7-Card Stud tournament. Total prize pool was £25,400 after 87 entrants. Eddie
Beiber won this event, good for €7,500. £5,705 went to K Mithani in second, and Stephen Lennon won £5,205 in third spot.
£100+£10 No Limit Hold'em was next and 140 players registered, putting £40,900 in the prize pool. After a deal was done
at the final table Kevin Twigg was awarded £8,500 for his first place finish. N Gibson and J Grech both won £7,150 for their
second and third place finishes respectively.
Pot Limit Hold'em was the next offering, again attracting 140 runners, and a prize pool of £32,750. Dave Copus was the winner in
this one, picking up £15,200. Runner-up Tony Chapman won £7,800 and third place finisher J Horsham won £4,870.
Back to No Limit Hold'em as the buy-in doubled to £200+£20. 129 players created a prize pool of £64,800 to be fought
over. Again a deal was struck at the final table and £19,000 was awarded to the winner Frankie Knight. Second and third place finishers
B White and A Vinson each won £13,225.
A £250+£25 Pot Limit Hold'em event was next, and we had a prize pool of £60,500 with 120 players. No deals were done
this time as E Bambler took down the first place prize of £23,250. £11,650 went to runner-up Allan McLean and £7,300 went
to third place finisher S Norwab.
The Main Event in Luton was a juicy £1,000+£30 No Limit Hold'em affair, and 142 hopefuls signed-up to compete for the £142,000
prize pool. That man again, Willie Tann, a regular winner on the tournament circuit, proved his poker prowess again by winning the £53,200
first place prize. Dan Samson can't have been too unhappy with his £26,600 second place prize, while S Jelinek settled for £16,630
in third.
Upcoming Events
The Celebrity Poker UK Challenge kicks off this weekend
at the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton, and should be a lot of fun. We'll be bringing you the results as they happen.
Looking ahead to September it is going to be a quiet month in the UK and Ireland, as many of our players will be playing the events in
Europe and the USA. But if you feel like seeing a few flops, then head to Sheffield for Napoleons
Casino Owlerton's Autumn Festival. It runs from September 29th to October 1st. Three events are on offer with buy-ins of £100,
£150 and £250.
As always, we will be bringing you all the results here at PokerPages. Good luck to you all if you're playing in any of the events.
Until next time, take care

Poker Down Under
David Parlor
The Victorian Poker Championships have been the most
successful in the history of the Crown Poker Room. As the championship draws to a close, many entry records have been broken with the week
starting on a very positive note, attracting 163 entrants to the $175 Limit Holdem. Domonic Italiano emerged as the winner following his
wife's victory in the Freeroll held on the previous night. Angela Italiano was very pleased to gain an entry into Crown's "Aussie Millions"
next year and will get her opportunity to mix it with some of the world's best players.
The "Aussie Millions" has been tipped to exceed 250 entrants by Poker Promoter, Keith 'Bendigo' Sloan. With the growth of Poker
throughout the world, I believe that this is a reasonable prediction and look forward to being a part of the biggest tournament to ever
be held in Australia.
Crown Casino has recently engaged the services of Sloan through World Poker Promotions as they push towards a target of 250. WPP have already
proved themselves in Europe where they have staged many popular events since their launch five months ago. One initiative that WPP will
bring to Crown is the World Speed Poker Championships. These events are a great example of how the team at WPP are not afraid to embrace
change in the ever growing world of Poker. Speed Poker is sure to appeal to the greater numbers of young players that are finding their
way into B&M Poker rooms and I am sure would be well received by the growing television audiences.
If you are curious about what this kind of poker is all about, have a look at what is happening with WPP at the Astoria
Palace Casino, Estonia, in September.
Crown's Tournament Director, Danny McDonagh, has recently come up with another first for the Crown Poker Room although at this stage it
is being kept under wraps. He has assured locals that an announcement will be made shortly after the Vic Champs and will offer something
a little different to the Crown Poker Room. For those that were of the belief that this is a Table Game to be introduced by Crown, I can
assure you it is not. The game will be No limit Holdem in a format that should be familiar to many.
Please contact me with any other questions you may have about Poker in Australia.
