Poker In America
Sharla Lehrmann

Labor Day has come and gone. An incredible line up of tournaments awaits you this month so it is time to toss those sandals into the closet and pull out your dress shoes. Let the games begin!

Although the internet has spawned an entire generation of new poker champions, the contemporary player has certainly not replaced their seasoned predecessors. September proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Doyle Brunson, one of poker's living legends, outlived and fed off a field of 667 players in California to bring to a close the 4 day long Bicycle Casino's Legends of Poker Championship. `"Texas Dolly" took down an impressive win of $ $1,198,290 and a seat to the prestigious World Poker Tour final. You might remember Lee Watkinson from Lakebay Washington. He won a cool $513,038 at the Mirage Poker Showdowns' Championship No Limit event in August. Hold on to your hats, because Mr. Watkinson has done it again. Although it wasn't for the trophy, he pulled in another $578,475 by sliding in behind Doyle Brunson for the second place win. Congratulations gentlemen.

The Plaza, in Las Vegas, is still going strong with its twenty three $1000 events. At the end of the third week, Steve Simmons has the lead in the cumulative point department and has managed to find himself on two final tables while scoring a win on September 12th. Many more tournaments to go, so, good luck all you players in rounding up your points.

Crossing over to the east coast, the Borgata Poker Open, in Atlantic City, is hosting a WPT event which is into its final days. With the main event underway, Michael Buttacavoli had the chip lead with Stan Goldstein hot on his tail. The field is so tight at the end of day one that it is still anyone’s ballgame, as we all know too well. The entries came to a total of 302 and after day one, 111 were still grinding it out. Day two changed everything. Michael ran into a wall and was eliminated. Stan has slipped to ninth position and Phil Ivey has pulled into first in chip lead. The final table has just finished at the time of writing with Daniel Negreanu winning $1,117,400.

Another hot spot in Atlantic City is the Trump Taj Mahal. It is hosting the U.S. Poker Championship beginning September 20th and culminating in the $9700 championship beginning October 5th. PokerSchoolOnline offers another one of its Invitational tournaments on September 24th with a buy in of $300. Looking to win a seat in the WPT? This is a great chance to go for the gold. Win this one and play against the winners of other PSO Invitational events for the sought-after $25000 WPT seat at the Bellagio.

If you love the Fall on the east coast, visit Foxwoods for the World Poker Finals beginning October 25th. If you have never been to Foxwoods, take time to play in a great tournament and wind around the worlds largest casino. Just a hint from one who didn't, be sure and remember where you parked your car.

Stopping off in the Midwest, we find the Fall Poker Classic off to a great start at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, MN. Only two days have been played so far so there are many more chances for you to grab a piece of the action. Buy-ins range from $100 to $500 with the championship played on September 30th for $1000. If you are in the area, stop in and enjoy a great time at Canterbury.

Back in Nevada, Las Vegas is pumped up and offering some great tournament opportunities. The Orleans is presenting the WPPA (World Poker Player Association) event from September 27th through October 12th. Down on the strip, the Bellagio is putting on the 2004 Festa al Lago III. The $10000 buy-n championship qualifies as a WPT event.

The Pot of Gold at the Reno Hilton has always been a favorite event for many. Beginning the 7th of October and finishing up October 17th, it promises to be another fun filled times always for all the players who return year after year. If you have never been to Reno, now is a great time to go. The buy-ins range from $100 to $2500.

Ending up back in California, The Bicycle is hosting the Big Poker Oktober!

Start your fall off right! Beginning September 30th with $175,000 in Guaranteed events and a new bonus point promotion for the Points Playoff on Sunday, October 17 you'll want to play as many as you can! Earn a Bonus Point towards the BIG $20,000 added $100/$20 No-Limit Hold'em Points Playoff when you are in the final 10% of the field. You only need 5 points to play!

The list seems endless. Poker is cropping up across the USA and there has to be a chance somewhere near you to try for that dream of becoming a great poker champion. Go to the special events section of PokerPages to get a full rundown on all the events happening in September and October. Best of Luck to everyone!

Poker In Europe
Kevin Pratt

The European Poker Tour got under way in Spain with the Barcelona Open. There was a strong European turn out for all the events with the main EPT Tournament being televised for screening in 2005. Organised by Poker Million winner John Duthie Season 1 of the European Poker Tour will include preliminary tournaments in Barcelona, London, Paris, Vienna and Dublin. The Grand Final event will be held in the majestic setting of the Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco.

Winners of the preliminary events will win prize packages worth €15,000 (in addition to their tournament winnings). The prize package includes entry into the Grand Final event, flights for two, accommodation in the stunning Hermitage Hotel in Casino Square, Monte Carlo and €1,000 spending money.

PokerPages owner Mark Napolitano entered the main event in Barcelona and just missed out on a final table appearance in coming 10th out of a field of 229 good enough for €3,400. Top European players John Kabbaj and Garry Bush both made the final table but had to give way to Alexander Stevic from Sweden. Alexander who won €80,000 was 8th in the European WSOP trial in Vienna earlier in the year and could be a name to watch out for in the future.

The €500 No Limit hold'em attracted 237 entries with Marcel Luske emerging the winner good enough for €40,000. Marcel has had a quiet 2004 by his high standards but is still regarded as one of the best players in Europe.

Harry Casagrande took the €200 Pot Limit Omaha and €33,000 his biggest win. Harry's last win was in January at Seefeld where he picked up €11,075 in winning the 7 Card Stud.

Serge Kammerer is a name that crops up regularly in the winners circle and he won the €100 No Limit Hold'em for his biggest ever win €24,000. A regular winner at the Aviation in France Serge seems to be branching out a bit and this result might be a springboard to a major event win.

Over in France the Paris Open of Poker main event was won by John Kabbaj €41,000. John is in good form this year winning the £750 No Limit Hold'em at The Vic and coming 2nd in the $3,000 No Limit Holdem at the WSOP.

Regular Aviation winner Chuc took the €500 Pot Limit Omaha the same event that he won in 2002. Willie Tann won the €500 No Limit Hold'em this coming hot on the heels of winning the £1,000 main event at Luton in August. It's strange that players suddenly win 2 main tournaments in quick succession. Check out the Aviation tournament gallery and previous galleries.

The Austrian Classics is the next big event in Europe starting on the 27th September with the biggest 7 Card Stud Tournament in the world the Poker EM in Baden Austria starting on October 6th.

Poker in the U.K.
Andrew Lacey

Hello again everyone. After a busy July and August the September tournament scene in the UK and Ireland was extremely quiet, with only one major tournament taking place. That was the Celebrity UK Poker Challenge held at the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton.

120 players from all walks of life entered the event where first place would pay £40,000, second place £20,000 and third place £14,500. Viv Williams claimed first place, fighting off Ron Ainsworth in their heads-up battle. Former Republic of Ireland international soccer player Tony Cascarino showed he could perform on green felt as well as green grass, by taking the third place prize. Roy De Bealoux came fourth with £10,250 and Roy "The Boy" Brindley, who is having an excellent run of form at the moment, took fifth place and £7,875. Congratulations go to all the winners in Brighton.

Upcoming Events

After such a quiet tournament period the good news is that there are a number of events to look forward to. Next on the list is the Gutshot Poker Festival at the Gutshot Poker Collective in London. It runs from September 27th to October 3rd. There are some very affordable £30 buy-in super-satellites for the Main Event, which has a £500 buy-in. Other events on offer have buy-ins of £50, £100, £150 and £200 so there are tournaments to suit all pockets.

Napoleon's Casino in Owlerton, Sheffield hosts their Autumn Festival starting on September 29th and running until October 1st. Three events are on offer. A £100 buy-in No Limit Hold' Em tournament, a £150 buy-in Pot Limit Hold 'Em/Omaha mixed event and a £250 buy-in No Limit Hold' Em tournament.

October has a feast of poker tournaments to be played out. First up is the European Poker Classic at the Vic in London. This will run from October 4th to October 10th. The Main event at the Vic this year is a £3,000+£30 buy-in two day No Limit Hold' Em freezeout. There will be a maximum of 200 players in this event.

Heading up north, you will find the Glasgow Masters Poker Championship being played at the Gala Riverboat Casino in Glasgow. Events run from October 10th to 15th and feature some very affordable buy-in events.

October 16th to 17th sees the popular Grosvenor Grand Prix at the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall, where all the regional winners play off in a two day event, with the final taking place on Sunday 17th.

In Dublin, Ireland the Merrion Casino stages the Irish Winter Tournament which always seems to attract the top UK pros. It will run from October 21st to 24th and the Main Event will be a €1,500+€100 buy-in two day No Limit Hold 'Em freezeout.

The Rendezvous in Brighton has the Harbour Lights Poker Festival starting on October 25th and running until the 31st. There are some very affordable buy-in events to be found here. The Main Event will be a £500+£25 buy-in two day No Limit Hold 'Em freezeout.

Wrapping up October, the Grosvenor Southampton runs the Southampton Poker Festival from October 31st to November 2nd. The Main Event will be on November 2nd and is a £400 buy-in No Limit Hold' Em freezeout.

You'll be spoiled for choice in the coming weeks with so much action taking place. As always, we will be bringing you all the results here at PokerPages. Good luck to you all if you're playing in any of the events.

Until next time, take care…

Andrew Lacey

Poker Down Under

The Victorian Poker Championship concluded last month with record numbers in all events leaving Crown Casino to return to its regular Thursday and Sunday tournaments. The Thursday Series events will continue in October with the commencement of Series Four and another guaranteed entry into next years "Aussie Millions. Saturdays Sit n' Go's are still proving very popular with events of $35 and $100 generating a lot of interest amongst the locals.

Last Sunday saw the first $100 no rebuy satellite for a seat in the next years 10 K main event and attracted a quality field. Many of the Crown regulars found themselves on the final table of this event to find the play very aggressive. Gary Cleaver was eventually declared the winner, securing himself a seat for only $100. This brings the total number of entries to 43 paid and there is still four months to go!

For those looking for something to hone their tournament skills in the lead up to next year's Australian Poker Championship, Sydney's APA and Casino Canberra have planned tournaments in November. After last years successful tournament the APA will again conduct this event in Sydney with a variety of buy-ins that should accommodate all budgets. Details of all events have recently been released and are available here.

Casino Canberra continues to run their regular Thursday evening Holdem tournament and is attracting capacity fields. The month of November will also see a Casino Employee tournament held over two days. If ever there were a chance to make some easy money in the cash games, this would be it. Dealers in Australia are not permitted to play in their own casino's and will be eager to soak up all the action they can in this short time. Show me the way to the cash games!
