Poker In America
Sharla Lehrmann
Fall is well under way in many areas of the world. I am sitting on top of a mountain in the Sierra Nevadas watching the first blizzard
of the season. Many poker rooms are still running their air conditioners and welcoming their short sleeved and shorts clad guests. I am
just wondering if I will make it down to the casino for the little weekly tournament tonight here in Lake Tahoe. Speaking of tournaments,
the month of October has been alive with choices galore.
The Plaza Ultimate Poker Challenge will be winding
up the 23 event tournament schedule by the end of the month. With only 3 of the $1000 buy in events left, it appears that the 100 finalists
for the 3 day final event beginning October 29th have found their positions and have all but locked in a seat. Steve Simmons, Renee Wexler,
Max Pescatori, Nicholas Bouyea, Dan Pugliese, Tahoe Andrew, Larry Sigety and Kenna
James, among others can sit back now and revel in all their final table accomplishments. Good luck to the final 100!
John Aglialoro had a wonderful run at the winners circle while playing at the United
States Poker Championship in Atlantic City at the Trump Taj Mahal. He took down two wins for a grand total of $723,290. Seems there
is no limit to his limit! Put him in either and he will show you how the game is played.
The Bicycle hosted another wonderful 17 days of great not so huge buy in tournaments that gave anyone and everyone a chance
at the money. Everyone had a lot of fun giving it a shot at their favorite game. Games ranging from stud, stud hi/lo, Omaha hi/lo and hold'em,
some with rebuys and some without. Unlimited rebuys in the no limit hold to shootouts in others. It was a plethora of choices for everyone.
Well-done Bicycle. After the Queen of Queens tournament
on November 7th, the Bicycle will be presenting the annual Turkey
Shoot/Ho Ho Hold'em tournament beginning November 25th and lasting through December 12th. A best all around player award of $5000 is
up for grabs, so, put this one on your calendar.
The Bellagio is winding up their 15-day stretch of nothing but fantastic poker in the Festa
al Lago III. With the last day of the The Doyle Brunson North American No-Limit Hold'em Poker Championship finishing up, it looks like
WSOP champ Carlos Mortenson is looking for the win. Mike Paulle has covered this tournament from day one and all his reports can be found
on the results page for each day of each tournament. Be sure to look for another great 3 weeks of poker at the Bellagio when the Five Diamond
World Poker Classic kicks off on November 27th. Stop Press Carlos
Mortenson wins the $1,000,000 first prize.
Looking to Foxwoods, the east coast is gearing up for the World
Poker Finals beginning October 25th and ending November 17th.
If you are traveling in Northern California, Lucky Chances is having the 49'er Gold
Rush Bonanza from November 6th through the 14th. Oregon has a nice mid range buy in tournament at the Wild
Horse Casino and Resort from November 4th through the 14th. Heading to the south, the Commerce
in Los Angeles has some great $200 and $300 tournaments culminating in a $540 no limit hold'em tourney with a seat to the main event for
the L.A. Poker Classic in February 2005.
Take a look at the October and November special event pages to get a full view of all the wonderful tournaments across America for the
remainder of 2004.
For now, I am going to head down to the casino and play a little poker. Care to join me??

Poker In the UK & Europe
Mark Hall
Hello everyone,
Another busy month of big tournaments in Europe, which have included the likes of, The
Austrian Classics in Vienna, The Annual Poker EM
at Baden Baden, The Scottish Masters Championships,
and most recently the Grand Prix at Walsall, Which between
them all, have offered over €1,000,000 in prize money.
After the recent success of the first EPT event held in Barcelona last month, the cameras were again rolling at the Victoria Casino in
London, this time for the European Poker Classic
It was another packed out week, and as everyone was pre pairing themselves for the main event, for others it was buisness as usual. The
£750 No Limit Hold'em, saw one of the most successful woman players ever, and also one of the nicest, Lucy
Rokach make it back to back victories in this particular event. Lucy won the same event back in the July festival at the "Vic". To win
any major event at the Vic is always hard, but to start doing it consistantly is quite an achievement. Well done Lucy.
The EPT main event which cost a mere £3000 to enter, was almost a sell out with 175 entries. In such prestigious events, with a huge
amount of prize money on offer, no player ever wants to be the first one out, and just the thought would give some players an uneasy sleep
the night before. But unfortunately, that's what happened to Rummit Somaiyata on the THIRD hand into the tournament! He managed to get all
his chip stack in pre flop, with Aces, only to be called by an unsuspecting player with Kings. As a player, this is a dream situation to
be in. It must have been very difficult to disguise the monumental disappointment that must have gripped every inch of him as a king flopped
and the hand of fate dealing a cruel blow to the Aces. Third hand and out! Not nice, but that's the crazy world of poker!
The Final was a tough encounter, with lots of quality on the table, which included one of the pre tournament favorites Marcel
"The Flying Dutchman" Luske. Also on the final was the very experienced and tough George McKeever and John
Shipley. After intense hours of "battle", The winner emergered as the classy John Shipley, and took the title and the winners cheque
of £200,000. Very well done John, and congratulations to all the finalists.
Baden Baden in Austria held the annual Poker EM 7 Card
Stud Championship. The winner was Theo Jorensen from Denmark, who collected just over €101,000 with second place finisher Istvan
Hamori from Hungary having to settle for €76,266 for his efforts.
The Grand Prix was another success, as many qualified
from all over the country to play in the two day event final which was held at Grosvenor Walsall. After months of qualifing, the final was
played out with the remaining six making a deal, with five players all receiving £22,000 and the winner James Reid collecting £44,400
and the title.
The "Harbour Lights" Festival at Brightons Rendezvous
Casino is the next event coming up on 25th October.

Poker Down Under

Crown Casino continues to offer a variety of tournaments, leading up to January's Australian
Poker Championship. The Thursday night series events are proving very popular, attracting up to 100 players on some nights. This series
of tournaments has already guaranteed three players a seat in next years $10,300 Main Event, bringing the total of entrants to 55, including
39 online winners.
Sunday's $55 cash tournament is also attracting good fields and also gives players an opportunity to win a seat in next years big one.
Last Sunday's $100 satellite for the main event saw local player Khush Walia take it out with some unorthodox play that was sure to confuse
some of the tournament veterans. A regular player described Khush in the following way;
" I saw him go All-in pre flop with 5-9 off suit and 6/7 suited two hands in a row. I can't recall what the opposition cards were because
I was so bewildered at him calling once he turned his cards over, but he was way behind both hands. He obviously came out on top both
times. When the player next to him questioned "how can you call an All-in with those cards???", the reply was "If I have an opportunity
to eliminate a player from the tourney without dramatically affecting my chipstack, then I will call coz you never know what the flop
may be".
Khush's style of play has now got him to the biggest Poker tournament in Australia and I am sure that many of the Crown regulars would
love to see him take it out. I guess they are also hoping that they do not come up against him when they are short stacked.
Sit N' Go's are increasing in popularity on Saturday afternoons an Monday evenings, with Monday's trial concluding on the25th October.
Tournament Director Danny McDonagh will analyse these events soon and advise if they are to remain a permanent basis. Meanwhile there are
plenty of tournaments and satellites at Crown to fill your Poker calendar for the rest of the year.
As well as the regular Thursday and Sunday events, a special weekend of Poker will be held from December 2 to December 5 and includes satellites
for January as well as two small buy-in tournaments. The remainder of December will see Super satellites for either $1100 entries or main
event seats in January.
Crown's Poker Events manager, Carlene Blake, has also advised me that accommodation for January is filling up fast. Both hotels at Crown
are offering a Poker Player Rate which may be accessed in the following manner:

The latest rumours to surface in Australian poker are that Sydney's Star City Casino is planning to open a Poker Room. With the number of
requests that I get from players asking about this I am sure they will have no problem filling the tables. The rumour is that they will have
four tables in operation for a six month trial, so book your seat now. If the success of the trail is based on number of players, I have no
doubt that this will grow into something that will give Australian players another great venue to play their favourite game.
Finally, casino staff will again have their opportunity to prove who is best on the other side of the tables at Casino Canberra. The two
day event will be held on the 23rd and 24th November and will offer a Limit and No Limit Holdem tournament. I expect these events will sell
out with the growing interest in Poker among casino employees.
If you have any questions about poker in Australia, please email me.
