Poker In America
Sharla Lehrmann
After weeks of recuperation I am back on my horse. New hip in
tact; life is good! So, I am off to Tunica for the World
Poker Open held in a joint effort between the Horseshoe and
the Goldstrike. The Open begins on the 5th of January with satellites
and super satellites kicking off the event. Along with the sats,
there is a media event held on the 5th. Then, the money games
begin with buy-ins ranging from $500 to $10,000. If you are lucky
enough to have joined PokerSchoolOnline (PSO) then you are in
for a wonderful treat as we are having the 3rd annual convention
in conjunction with the World Poker Open. The first PSO
Invitational will be held on the 7th of January. The top finisher
for PSO will qualify for the big grand final in January of 2006.
Just as this player will be in seventh heaven, we have 26 ecstatic
members vying for a coveted $25,000 seat in the Bellagio WPT final
this Spring. Good luck to everyone!!!
December turned out to be a quiet month in poker. Not that there
weren't many tournaments, but, in comparison to other months,
it seems Santa might have taken priorty. The
Trump Classic reeled in 155 players for the $10,00 Championship.
With a prize pool amounting to $775,000, Maciek Gracz of Raleigh,
NC, United States took a sizable $295,275 for first place.
The
Five Diamond World Classic II at the Bellagio, a WPT event,
had some very competitive games played for pretty high prices.
All events ranged from $1500 to $15,000. These were some tremendous
events to catch your favorite pro "strutting his/her stuff".
My favorite, Daniel
Negreanu from Las Vegas managed to make the final table qualification
turn into a $1,770,218 win. Way to go Daniel! (I'm pretending
he can hear me!) In my heart I congratulate him on his fabulous
Player of the year title along with the all-time WPT money lead.
If only I could wiggle my nose and make myself younger!
The Bicycle held their Ho
Ho Hold 'em event and it was a hit just like all the years
before. The buy-ins are closer to realistic for all of us, and
they will certainly not make us mortgage our homes and cars. Making
a trip to sunny L.A. for a few $100 and $200 tournaments could
be fun if we have saved up some bankroll. They offered $5,00 to
the best all around point champion to boot. Heck, I think Ill
go next year.
January holds a few big tournaments in the USA. If in Tunica
(Robinsonville) for the World
Poker Open, don't forget to stop into the Grand for the Grand
American Poker Classic. Beginning the 6th of January and running
through the 24th, there are a wide variety of $100 - $1500 buy-in
tourneys. If you have a chance to play and get a sweet dealer
by the name of Nikki, give a great big hi from me.
Hollywood Park is hosting its annual Poker
Derby tournament from the 6th - 17th. If you are over in California,
in the LA area, stop by Hollywood Park. There are great ring games
running all the time, and the buy-ins for the Derby are super
nice with lots of guarantees. If you have the time and the bankroll,
they are having $10,000 all around player awards.
The Orleans in Vegas is hosting yet another WPPA event, this
time called "The
Memorial Championship of Poker". These events are expected
to be televised with all the earnings going to the WPPA members.
Seems like joining the World Poker Players Association isn't too
bad an idea. The events last for a four-day weekend with satellites
running Thursday and Friday with the Memorial Championship on
Saturday. The buy-ins to the sats are $500 and the championship,
$5000.
Harrah Atlantic City
Poker Tournament, an ESPN WSOP circuit event will be held
January 7th - 18th. There are satellites to dabble in for the
championship buy-in along with the other events. The main event
starting on the 16th is held for a mere $10,000 buy-in, but heck,
you could be on ESPN!!! The rest of the tournaments range from
$500 to $2000.
Be sure to check out all the tournaments around the world on
www.pokerpages.com
. I hope everyone had a very joyous Christmas and that we are
all looking forward to a very exciting and wonderful New Year!

Hi Everyone,
December is the month for "Christmas Crackers", and they were
a few this month, including the Irish
Christmas Poker Festival at Macau Club, Cork, Ireland, Christmas
Tournament at Astoria Palace, Tallinn, Estonia, and the Christmas
Poker Championship held at Casino Austria,Bregenz and we start
at the Renezvous
Casino at the Marina, Brighton.
Local favorite Dave Barlow, picked up £5400 for his victory
in the Omaha/Hold 'em round of each to get the week off to a great
start. With good turn outs everyday during the week and the biggest
prize went to the main event winner Ian Fisher and won £17,300
for his efforts. Mohammed Latif finished 2nd for £8,500
and in third spot was Steve Robinson with £6000.
Grosvenor Luton held their Christmas
Cracker week also. With attendance numbers reaching full nearly
every day, it was another successful festival. It was turned into
a success for A. Adda as he won the Tuesday £150 Pot Limit
Hold 'em event for £11,520 and then completing the double
the next day by winning the Wed £200 No Limit Hold 'em and
picking up a further £10,000. Nice going! Just missing out
and finishing in 3rd place was local Kevin Twigg who has put a
string of excellent results together this year. Always on the
attack, and fearless at times, he is very entertaining to watch.
And not afraid to get a round in at the bar either!!
The £600 No Limit Hold 'Em main event again for the 3rd
time running was a sell out. The 2 day event proved again to be
extremely popular as there was the usual late rush of people trying
to gain entry via the satellites. It was experience and class
that told in the end, as Irishman Mike Magee based in London,
notched another noteable win to his endless list of winning results.
Mike earned himself £18,620 for his 2 day efforts. A Virghis
finished 2nd and won £9,350 and Pete Kwan £5,800 for
his 3rd place finish.
The £50 Pot Limit Hold 'Em was the final event of the festival,
and was won by Willie Tann. Not as much as his £50,000 main
event victory in the last Luton festival, but £1390 pays
all the bills at least!!
The Helsinki
Freezeout was held from the 6th - 12th in the newly named
"Grand Casino" formally known as Casino Ray.
A lot of new faces turned out to compete but it was some familiar
faces that were shining. After recent good form, event 2 was won
by Robert Binneli and picked up €6527. The main event was
a €1500 No Limit Hold 'Em tournament. The winner eventually
being Seppa Parkkinen from Finland winning €48,510, with
Sweden's Jan Backstorm in a close 2nd and receiving €35,574.
Anders Henriksson, also from Sweden finished 3rd for €22,638
The €500 Limit Hold 'Em was won by Peter Hedlund, from Sweden
and won €9330.
The next big event is the Crown
Australian Poker Championship in Melbourne from the 6th -
20th Jan 2005.
Until next year, good luck and I wish everyone a merry Christmas
and a lucky new year.

Poker Down Under

This time of year is the time filled with most anticipation amongst
Australian Poker players and not because Santa Clause is planning
to leave Pocket Rockets under the tree (Although they certainly
may come in handy during next month's Australian
Poker Championship).
Crown
Casino will again be on show demonstrating why they are the
leader in Australian Poker. Already, table movements have begun
as Crown prepares for the arrival of many interstate and international
players. Last year's record of 133 players for the $10,000 Main
Event has already been exceeded with 161 entries received to date.
This number will soon reach the 200 mark and it is expected that
the event will begin with more than 250 players returning a first
prize of $1,000,000.
Many of these entrants will be new to Crown as they have won
their way to Australia via online tournaments. These are still
available on various sites up until January 4th and are inclusive
of accommodation.
For those that prefer to face off across the felt, that we are
all familiar with, there will be no shortage of satellites for
players visiting Melbourne in January. They will recommence on
January 4th at 6.15pm with a $125 entry, $100 rebuy super satellite.
Last week's final satellite for 2004 saw more than 150 players
compete for the two seats that were awarded with many late arrivals
unable to participate. Interest in satellites has never been this
strong amongst Australian players in the past and I am sure that
the interest will increase as the Main event gets closer. To ensure
that you get a seat in these satellites register early.
The Main Event is only one of many tournaments available in January
with others to suit all budgets and game preferences. Holdem,
Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Manila, and the new Poker phenomenon of
Speed Poker will all be on offer with entry fees starting as low
as $200.
Australia's highest ranking player for 2004, Sam Korman, enjoyed
much success in these smaller events last year and took home some
considerable prize money. They are sure to attract large fields
of locals as well as internationals that are warming up for their
chance to become Australia's first Poker millionaire, and not
an Eddy McGuire in sight.
I hope all of the Australian players have a very merry Christmas
and Happy New Year, and wish you all the best of luck at the tables
in 2005.
