Poker In America
Sharla Lehrmann
January 2005 started off with an action packed World Poker
Open in Robinsonville Mississippi (also known as Tunica) hosted by the Horseshoe and Goldstrike Casinos. Not only was this one of the
most prestigious events of the year, it also was the home of the 3rd Annual PokerSchoolOnline convention. This year proved to be one of
the most exciting and fun conventions so far. Members came from as far away as Sweden and enjoyed not only the wide array of tournaments,
satellites and live action, but they took pleasure in meeting one another and playing face to face. They played live games together and
vied for the prize and chance to win the PokerSchoolOnline championship tournament played among each other. There was a great deal of camaraderie
and healthy competition.
One of the best tournaments played was the Grand Finale of the PokerSchoolOnline
2004 Live Tour. Twenty-one of the twenty-six qualified members took on the look of the professionals as the fought for the $25,000 seat
in the Bellagio WPT main event in 2005. Two women battled against nineteen "testosterone" driven poker players with Kaelaine, a strong and
confident woman left standing holding the prize. Now, I know some of you are members of PokerSchoolOnline, and some are not, but if you
get the chance to join, one cannot find a better "bang for the buck" subculture of poker players, mentors, and teachers. Take a look at
www.PokerSchoolOnline.com and give it a go. Over 5000 people do and find
it to be a blast.
While the World Poker Open was starting it's events, the Grand held a series of events, The
Grand American Classic from January 6th through the 24th in Tunica as well. Lots of card playing to be done in Mississippi.
Harrah's Atlantic City kicked off the ESPN World Series
of Poker Circuit Events in style. The next event
will be held on the other side of the country at Harrah's Rincon in San Diego beginning February 20th.
For the remainder of the California poker enthusiasts, there is and was plenty of poker activity on the west coast. The Bicycle held the
America's Poker Classic while Hollywood Park hosted
the Poker Derby. Following those tournaments, the Commerce
began the L.A. Poker Classic; the Sycuan Casino holds
The San Diego Super Bowl of Poker. The Pechanga
Open in Temecula California offers a great array of medium buy-in tournaments from $100 to $500 in Februay. It does seem that California
has the monopoly on good tournaments in February. Don't miss the annual Shooting
Star Tournament at Bay 101 in San Jose along with one of the stops for the Southern
California Poker Tour at Lake Elsinore. The Peppermill in Reno is just a hop skip and a jump for California and will hold the Spring
Poker Tournament from February 26th - March 6th. These tournaments are well within the range of affordability with a variation of games.
If you are into the $500 buy-in tournaments on the east coast, Harrah's Atlantic City is sponsoring a monthly Friday
Night Freeze Out for a buy-in of $500 starting January 28th and carrying through March 25th.

Poker In UK/Europe
Mark Hall
Hi Everyone,
After the Xmas festivities of 2004 have now finally been put away for another twelve months, Its time to get back down to business and
ready yourselves for a tough and busy tournament schedule in the coming months.
Its been a quiet January to kick off the new year, sort of the quite before the storm, but if you fancied a quick flight over to Australia,
you could have made it for the the 2005 Crown Australian
Poker Championships, Melbourne, which started on the 6th Jan.
There is always a big English and European presence at the Crown Australian Championships "Down Under" and the European flag was flying
high all week as Englishman Richard Ashby, took Event 1 in the No Limit Hold 'em winning $27,656 to get off to a great start to the week.
Anders Berg from Norway finished runner up and collected $17,600. "Mad" Marty Wilson from West Midlands, UK, continued the winning with
a very popular victory in Event 4 $500 Omaha beating 83 players to pick up 1st prize of $29,535. In Event 8 it was a familiar face on the
tournament scene, winning the Omaha high-low. Tony
Bloom from London, UK won $24,650 for his efforts. Tony also went on later in the week and came second in the heads up tournament picking
up a further $32,000. In the $5000 Omaha Marcel
"Flying Dutchman" Luske, won $74,000 first place, Frank
Callaghan, Ireland, finished 3rd for $32,375. The 3 day main event No Limit Hold 'em cost $10,000 to enter and attracted 263 players.
The winner Jamil Dia from New Zealand held his nerve to win first prize and a cool $1,000,000 Mike Simkin from USA finished in runner up
spot and had $465,000 to console him! 3rd place went to George Mamacas from Australia, taking home $250,000. Marcel
"Flying Dutchman" Luske couldn't repeat his victory in the Omaha, and finished with a creditable 9th for $50,000.
Grosvenor Luton, Bedfordshire held their annual Grand Challenge
on the 17th Jan. Another busy week for the staff and dealers! The £500 No Limit Hold 'em event had 140 players and as won by R.Stevens
and took home £26,200 K.Dionysou finished 2nd for £13,100, and Vic regular Tony Hakki close behind in 3rd for £8,910.
The Main Event £600 No Limit Hold 'em was eventually won by Julian Thew from England, who incidently recently secured a sponsorship
deal for himself, So smiles all round there for all concerned! Julian won £48,000 for 1st prize along with title and trophy, runner
up was Keith "Camel"
Hawkins from Darlington, UK, collected a handy £24,000. E Barker was 3rd for $15,000. Congratulations to all the players, that
played in the week and well done to all the staff at Luton for making things run as smoothly as possible.
All results can be found on www.pokerpages.com in the results
section.

Poker Down Under
David Parlor
Australia's largest tournament has reached its conclusion attracting 263 players from all over the world for the $10,000 Main event. This
nearly doubled the 133 entrants that participated last year and looks very positive for future years. The two week Australian
Poker Championship incorporated a wide variety of events with buy-ins from as little as $125 for a satellite seat, attracting many low
limit players wanting to take their shot at some large prize pools.
As well as local Australian players, several well-known poker personalities were seen taking their seats in the Aussie millions. Players
such as Mike Sexton, Scotty Nguyen, Marcel Luske and Harry Demetriou were immediately recognized by Melbourne locals who had seen these
players on various television appearances. With players of this caliber, the main event was no cakewalk as many of the big names were eliminated
early.
Jamil "The Real Deal" Dia was finally declared the winner after three long days of competition and was very popular among the other Kiwi
players and many Australians who have enjoyed playing Poker with Jamil for years. Jamil is no stranger to final tables, although he has
never played for a first prize of $1,000,000 and certainly appeared to enjoy the experience. Jamil, who runs a Lebanese bakery in New Zealand,
said that while the win will change his life a little, he is not ready to give up his day job. Other finalists included, Mike Simkins, George
Mamacas, Martin Comer, Stephen McLean, and Warwick Dunnett.
The next major Poker tournament in this part of the world will be in Christchurch, New Zealand, to be held at Christchurch Casino from
April 2 to 9. The New Zealand Poker Championship is always enjoyed by the local layers as well as the large number of casino employee's
who make the journey across the Tasman to compete in the Casino employee event held every year. This event caters for low to mid limit players
in a very relaxed environment that keeps players returning every year.
With the recent growth of Poker in Australia I would expect other casino's to have a look at the possibility of its introduction or expansion.
Star City casino in Sydney recently introduced six tables and is expected to expand operations in the near future. Other venues around the
country are also rumoured to be exploring the possibility of introducing Poker after observing the success of Crown and The Australian Poker
Championship.
