Poker Dollars Program

Poker Dollars image

As most of you are aware, we have now started our Poker Dollars program in place of The Warm Ups. Though we have many more Warm Ups planned for the not-too-distant future, we wanted to launch this new program for the interim period. We are happy to say that Poker Dollars have proved to be just as popular as the Warm Up Tournaments. We thank you for your continued support.

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the first player to claim his $25.00 Poker Dollar voucher lives in Australia, and he will be taking it to the Crown Casino in Melbourne, to play in a satellite event for the up-and- coming Australasian Championships. We wish him Luck in this event.

Just to answer some of of the questions that we have received about the Poker Dollar program:

If you place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a round 2 event on a Saturday or Sunday then you win PokerPages Poker Dollars vouchers. In order to play in a round 2 event, you first must place 1st through 5th in a round 1 event the same week.

The winners of the round 2 vouchers will received notification by email of how to claim the voucher.

The vouchers are valid for 1 year from the date of winning, but you can collect more than one PokerPages Poker Dollars voucher, to be put towards a larger tournament buy-in.

At this stage we are only giving away PokerPages Poker Dollar vouchers, and these can be claimed at any casino worldwide for a tournament buy-in. We have had much interest from casinos to be part of the program, so in the near future, vouchers will be available for specific casinos.

Tournament Chatter By Susie Isaacs

Losing Doesn't Always Hurt

None of us like to lose but we can't always take first either. I am never happy to lose in a heads-up match, playing not only for the big bucks of first place, but also a paid entry to the Tournament of Champions, but in this case it didn't hurt as bad as it has in the past.

I played the ladies hold'em tournament at the Orleans Open on July 16, and after a day of roller costar chip count, I managed to find myself at the final table with several good poker players and one novice in particular. After nine long hours of play I was heads-up with Jan Numan from Johnson City, Tennessee, who had only been playing poker for six short months.

From a distance, Jan appeared to be just lucky but truth be known she was a very good student of the game and a controlled player who was making the right decisions at the right time. She seemed to have a knack for what to do and when to do it while being hit with the deck. Jan managed to get three quarters of the chips in play and within four hands of heads-up play eliminated me to give her a first place finish and a seat in the upcoming TOC.

The nice part of this was how thrilled she was and how overcome she and her husband were with the win. They both shed tears of joy and were as gracious as anyone could imagine. That made my loss a little easier to handle, not to mention the fact that she purchased four of my books to take back to Tennessee to brag to her friends. I signed each book with verification of her story of poker victory in Las Vegas.

I ran into Jan the following night at the Mirage and she was still on a natural high from her win. Jan told me she was going to study seven-card stud and Omaha eight or better so she would be prepared to compete in the TOC. Look out guys, she's no pushover.

Poker in Russia By Bill Marczak

Moscow image

Tournament Poker in Russia

Tournament poker in Russia is expanding at a rapid rate, both in Moscow & St Petersburg. The recent “White Nights” poker festival at Olympia Casino, & The Taleon Masters at Taleon Casino, both held in St Peterburg, were resounding successes both in terms of entrants & organization.

New players are constantly emerging & it won’t be long before a substantial player base has been established in this beautiful tourist city. Just as significant is the fact that the traditionally popular poker game 32 card deck, 5-card stud is not even on the tournament schedule anymore.

Now it’s Texas hold’em limit, pot limit & no limit, Omaha pot limit, & 7-card stud pot limit. The fact that high-low games are now being played in Moscow leads me to believe that these games will also be introduced in tournaments, establishing Russia in line with the rest of the poker world in terms of the games that will be played in tournaments here - “out with the old, in with the new”.

Professor Poker By John Vorhaus

John Vorhaus

Dear Professor Poker,

I hate it when they raise my big blind. I'd like to defend, but I don't want to get trapped with a crappy hand like 9-4. Can you give me any strategies for making them back off my big blind?

Big Blind

Dear Big,

You can, of course, re-raise when they raise your big blind, although smart players will notice if you do that just because you're aggravated, or tired of being bullied, and punish you accordingly. Try this instead. Just call the raise, and then bet out on any ragged flop. Since you're in the blind, you're more likely to be holding the sort of hand that a ragged flop hits. Many opponents, respecting the randomness of your blind hand, will fold if you bet into that unconnected flop.

The key to success with this strategy is being prepared to bet (and continue betting) as if you'd actually hit your hand. Of course your goal is to win the pot, but even if you don't, you teach your opponent that you'll get frisky with him when he attacks your blind. You train him not to do that. In the best of all possible worlds, you call a raise with that 9-4, hit your flop, win the pot, and reveal that you'll "defend with anything," and get them to back off for good. Try it and see!

European Poker By Tina Napolitano

You can still catch the last day of the Worthersee Trophy in Velden, Austria, which takes place on July 22nd. The Dealers Choice tournament takes place in Baden Baden, Germany the first week of August 9th-11th.

I would like to also mention a congratulations to the Holland Casino on their up and coming 25th Anniversary. PokerPages wishes them many more years of success. The Poker Team there is first class and we are all sure that this November's Masters Classics of Poker, itself in it's 10th year, will be a run away success for them.

Poker in the UK and Ireland By Tina Napolitano

Grosvenor Southampton is having a hold'em double on July 29th and 30th, but otherwise not much to report on the UK front this time around for poker. Guess things go a little quiet during the kid's summer holidays.

There is an opportunity to take in some poker whilst on those exotic vacations, so be smart and book a location after checking out the poker action at various tourist spots on PokerPages. Be sure to keep the family happy but also participate in your beloved game of poker! Seems to be a huge gap in poker tournaments at this time of year throughout the UK and Europe - an opportunity waiting to happen it seems.

Poker Down Under By David Parlor
David Parlor

The next big event in Australasian Poker is of course The Australasian Championships being held at Crown Casino in August, less then a month to go. The banter has started with many of the regular tournament players, but I will reserve my judgement on who I believe will win the big one when they receive the money.

The other big news in Australasian Poker at the moment is that Christchurch Casino have released details of their tournaments to be held in April of next year. I attended this year's tournament and am sure that I will make the journey to New Zealand in 2002 as will many other Aussies. So N.Z. look out the Aussie invasion will happen again.

Due to the "Events Schedule" at Christchurch Casino the 2002 New Zealand Poker Championships have undergone some changes to past years. The tournament program has been shortened to 7 days and also includes satellites to allow players to win seats into the major event during the tournament week.

The tournament will again consist of the Canterbury Championships on the 1st 3 days. The New Zealand Championship events will form the final 4 days of the schedule.

The other major change is that the main event entry fee has been reduced to $1,200 and will be a one day event.

Have to go, I have a game to get to in Stockton, England. I will be back in Australia before the Australasian Tournaments, but if you have any questions about Poker Down Under please email me.
