Billy Baxter
Born in 1940, William Baxter, Jr. hails from Augusta, Georgia and a gambling background that began during his school years. His knowledge about hustling pool games came into play when he was only 14-years old, and he saved thousands of dollars in only a few years. At the age of 18, he discovered poker, and he played for many years before ending up in Las Vegas in the 1970’s.
Playing alongside some of the now-legendary players like Doyle Brunson, Puggy Pearson, and Stu Ungar, Baxter was skilled in all of the major poker variations and translated his cash game skills into tournament wins by the mid-70’s. He claimed his first WSOP bracelet in 1975 in deuce-to-seven draw and his second in 1978, also in deuce-to-seven. Two more bracelets were claimed in 1982, another in 1987, one in 1993, and his most recent in 2002. His ability to stay relevant in an ever-changing and growing industry is one of the great testaments to his poker skills. He was one of the original poker backers, having famously staked Ungar for his 1997 WSOP bracelet. All of his poker accomplishments were recognized by his 2006 induction to the Poker Hall of Fame.
Baxter was also credited for a major Supreme Court victory - William E. Baxter Jr. vs. the United States - in which it was ruled that Baxter’s career as a professional poker player was legitimate and must be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service and the federal government. The challenge stemmed from his income being classified as “unearned” and taxed at a much higher rate than “earned” income, and his court win allowed poker income to be classified as “earned” going forward.
