Daniel Alaei
Daniel Alaei was born in 1983 in Santa Fe Springs, California. As a teenager, he began taking an interest in card games, and he was playing poker regularly by his late teens. Cash games were his main interest for much of his young life, and he worked his way up in stakes through the years to become a highly respected high-stakes cash game player. Though the no-limit hold’em games were good to Alaei, which he mostly played at the $50/$100 level, tournaments began to interest him. During a trip to San Francisco in 2003, he played the $500 NLHE Main Event at the 49’er Gold Rush Bonanza, and his 18th place finish spurred his interest in playing more live events. His cashes and final tables led to a 2004 Legends of Poker preliminary event that became his first victory. By 2006, Alaei was able to make a big name for himself at the World Series of Poker, as he cashed four times and then won his first bracelet in a $5K no-limit 2-7 lowball event, which also came with $430,698. He won his second piece of WSOP gold in 2009 when he took down the $10K Omaha hi/low championship event, and his third came in 2010 with a victory in the $10K PLO championship. It was also in 2009 that he picked up his first World Poker Tour title by winning the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $1,428,430. With over $5 million in tournament earnings to date, the ever-quiet and humble Alaei is becoming more than just a feared cash game player, but an intimidating tournament competitor as well.
