Darvin Moon

Darvin Moon was born on October 1, 1963 in Oakland, Maryland. He learned how to play poker with the help of his grandfather at a young age, but with that solely as a pastime, he spent the majority of his years in the woods near Backbone Mountain, where he supported himself through the years as a logger. His later adult years found him with his own logging company and living happily in a trailer with wife Wendy. In his early 40’s, Moon began watching poker on television and playing in home games on a regular basis with other local players at the fire department and Elks Lodge. But at the same time, he was experiencing some financial woes by way of debts and a lien on his property, as well as forgery and bad check allegations. When he won a satellite to the $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker Main Event in 2009, he contemplated putting it toward his finances but instead used it as intended, to participate in the biggest poker tournament in the world. Moon did use that $10K to buy in to the Main Event, and two weeks later, he found himself as a member of the November Nine with a guaranteed prize of at least $1.2 million for a minimum ninth place finish. For the four months leading to the final table, he avoided most interviews as he took care of his logging business but was swarmed by the media when he returned to Las Vegas in November. The ESPN cameras ultimately captured him going heads-up with Joe Cada for the title, and though Moon lost, he walked away with $5,182,601 for his second place finish.
