David Chiu

David Chiu was born on August 23, 1960 in China, though he first came to the United States at the age of 18 as a college exchange student. He first attended Oregon State University as a computer science major but then moved to Denver where he opened a Chinese restaurant. He took a second job during that time, though, as a poker dealer, and thus began his life with poker. By 1996, Chiu’s poker abilities were becoming apparent in poker tournaments, and it was at that year’s World Series of Poker in Las Vegas that he proved it. He won a $2,000 limit hold’em event for his first WSOP bracelet that also came with $396,000 in prize money, and two more cashes that year, including a tenth place in the $10,000 buy-in Main Event, solidified his decision to sell the restaurant, settle in Southern California, and play poker for a living. Chiu won his second WSOP bracelet in 1998 in another limit hold’em event, and his third came in seven-card stud in the year 2000. He then won his fourth in Omaha hi/lo in 2005. But he also made a name for himself on the World Poker Tour, making his first televised final table in 2003 but winning his first title in the 2008 WPT World Championship at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, where he beat Gus Hansen walk away with $3,389,140. All in all, his career has garnered him more than $7 million in live tournament earnings, and the soft-spoken Chinese American continues to dominate in tournaments around the world.
