Gavin Smith

Born September 4, 1968 in Guelph, Ontario, Gavin Smith is a Canadian poker player who learned cards by playing rummy and cribbage with his father. He worked as a taxi driver and on a golf course before starting to play mixed-games poker with his pals at the age of 26. Like a lot of would-be professionals, Gavin eventually became a poker dealer. He even started his own club in 1998. Gavin's big break on the poker scene came with two first-place finishes at the 2000 World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Casino. Gavin is known for his self-described "clown" table image. "It gets me calls, it gets me people making crazy plays against me...it gets me a number of different things," he's said. "In [a] $2,000 no limit [event], a player made a play at me with queen high, and a pot of 560,000, with only 760,000 chips in play. I don't think he ever makes that play against someone with a different table image."
