Johnny Chan was born in Canton, China, moved to the U.S. in 1968. His family owned restaurants in Houston, TX, where he attended classes at the University of Houston. Chan dropped out at the age of 21 to move to Las Vegas and become a professional poker player.

Johnny Chan

Johnny Chan was born in Canton, China, moved to the U.S. in 1968. His family owned restaurants in Houston, TX, where he attended classes at the University of Houston. Chan dropped out at the age of 21 to move to Las Vegas and become a professional poker player.

After winning the main event of the World Series of Poker in two consecutive years - 1987 and 1988 - Chan became an immediate legend. The final hand of the 1988 WSOP was featured in the film, Rounders. Chan flopped the nut straight versus Erik Seidel, but slow-played the hand, trapping Seidel into a futile all-in bluff on the river. Chan called, taking down his second title.

At present Chan is tied with Doyle Brunson for the WSOP bracelet record, taking his 10th in the 2006 WSOP. Frequently seen playing in some of the highest-stakes cash games in the world, Johnny Chan lives in Las Vegas.
