Rino Mathis
Rino Mathis was born and raised in Switzerland. He grew up playing games like chess and backgammon, so it was no surprise when he took an interest in poker in the early 1990’s. Starting with cash games, he was able to make a living at the game that eventually included live tournaments and online poker as well. Mathis’ tournament successes date back to 1996, when he made two final tables at the German Poker Convention and two more at the European Masterclassics of Poker in Amsterdam. He consistently found himself at final tables as the years went on, and his first wins came in 2001 where the mixed game player found victory in both a split-limit seven-card stud and pot-limit Omaha tournament at the Autumn Tournament series in Bregenz. By the time of the poker boom, Mathis was running well in tournaments like the European Poker Tour and even the occasional World Series of Poker during trips to the United States. More wins came at the Autumn Tournament series, as well as the CAPT Bregenz Open, Cup of Nations, and European Poker Championship. He even won an EPT Vilamoura preliminary event in 2009. Altogether, he has accumulated more than $700K in live event winnings. He has also become a member of Team PokerStars Pro to represent Switzerland around the world and online, and he runs a poker news website that focuses on the promotion of poker in his home country.
