Amarillo Slim Preston
Thomas Preston, Jr., better known as Amarillo Slim, was born on December 31, 1928, in Johnson, Arkansas but spend most of his youth in Amarillo, Texas. One of the most famous faces and names in poker, Preston began gambling during his overseas military deployments, learning how to book sports and hustle pool, but it was back in Texas that he met Doyle Brunson and Brian “Sailor” Roberts, and set out on the road to play poker. Preston became known outside the poker world after winning the 1972 World Series of Poker for $15,000, at which point he appeared on television shows like “60 Minutes” and “The Tonight Show.” He also made a cameo in the 1974 movie “California Split.” He played the live tournament circuit for years, as well as cash games, and won his second WSOP bracelet in 1974, third in 1985, and fourth in 1990, the latter two in pot-limit Omaha. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1992. Preston, with his signature cowboy hat and ostrich skin boots, can still be seen at the World Series of Poker each year.
