Van Marcus was born and raised in Australia, and it was as a young boy that he discovered poker, courtesy of his uncle’s introduction to the game. But it wasn’t until he saw the movie Rounders as a young man that he was inspired to learn the intricacies of the game. He began to play at the local Crown Casino in Melbourne during his time off from university studies, where he was seeking a degree in computer science and software engineering. Eventually, though, he took a $50 bankroll and built it into a more substantial number, courtesy of cash games and the occasional tournament experience. By 2004, Marcus was doing well in tournaments, having final tabled a no-limit hold’em event at the Crown Victorian Poker Championships and won an Omaha hi-lo event days later. But it wasn’t until 2007 that he truly began to make his mark on the poker world. He final tabled two events at the Aussie Millions to start that year, and he traveled to Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker, where he final tabled a $1,500 PLO event and took home more than $190K for third place. He went on to final table the Asia Pacific Poker Tour Manila stop a few months later for fourth place. The following year, he returned to Manila for the APPT and won the Main Event for his first major title, one that also awarded more than $163K in cash. He followed that up with two WSOP final tables in 2009 and a win at the APPT Tournament of Champions. As of the beginning of 2011, Marcus showed more than $1.2 million in live tournament earnings, and he has won more than $1 million in online cash games. One of the stars of Australian poker has become a recognized pro the world over.
