He attended Washington University in St. Louis to obtain a degree in physics, mathematics, and computer science, and he followed it up with a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991.
Chen spent years working in the quantitative analysis field and in the software design business before shifting his concentration to poker. In the 1990’s, he began developing the Chen Formula, which ranked Texas hold’em starting hands through numerical value. He then took his analysis of poker to many new levels and co-authored “The Mathematics of Poker” with Jerrod Ankenman. The book about quantitative techniques of poker and game theory has been hailed as one of the most complicated but groundbreaking works in the history of the game.
By translating his analysis into tournament play, Chen has accomplished many goals in the world of poker, with his first tournament cash coming in 1999 and first WSOP cash in 2000. Going into 2010, accumulated 18 major tournament cashes, but the two most prominent came in 2006 when he won a WSOP bracelet in $3,000 limit hold’em and another in $2,500 short-stacked no-limit hold’em. To date, he shows more than $1 million in live tournament winnings but plays a great deal online as well as a “Friend of PokerStars.”
