Ylon Schwartz

Ylon Schwartz was born in 1970 in New York. His penchant for game strategy and competition took him to the streets of Manhattan, where he began to play chess for money during his teenage years. He eventually became ranked by the United States Chess Federation and became a FIDE Master. Though he tried the normal route of education through a local community college, he ultimately worked toward becoming a special education assistant in addition to his chess career, though he also made money at backgammon, darts, and sports betting. By 2004, Schwartz had also been introduced to poker by a backgammon friend, and he entered small underground tournaments and won money. As he studied the game, as he had done with chess, he became more intrigued. Though he spent much of his twenties in back room games while caring for his sick mother, he eventually took to live tournaments in 2004. He final tabled events at the United States Poker Championships, cashed in several World Series of Poker events the following year, and continued to build his bankroll. His big break came in 2008 when he ran deep in a WSOP $2K limit hold’em event and went even further in the $10K Main Event, ultimately making the final table and returning to play for millions at the November Nine in front of ESPN cameras. He finished in fourth place, which was worth nearly $3.8 million. From there, he proceeded to make more WSOP final tables and play more of the major live events. Altogether, he accumulated more than $4.3 million by the end of 2010
