Mike Matusow

Two-time WSOP bracelet winner and the 2005 WSOP Tournament of Champions event, taking home $1,000,000 against a world class field.

It was during his tenure as a dealer at The Orleans and Sam's Town Casino in Las Vegas that Matusow honed his poker playing interest and skill. In 1997 a WSOP bracelet eluded him when he came in second to Scotty Nguyen in the $2000 Omaha Hi/Lo event. In 1999 he scored the first of many major victories and a coveted WSOP bracelet in the $3500 No Limit Hold'em event.

While people once categorized Matusow primarily as an Omaha Hi/Lo specialist, he has cashed in as many major Hold'em tournaments, including two WSOP Championship final table appearances in 2001 and 2005. He stated at the start of 2005 WSOP that he was trying to regain his best game after a period in which he had screwed it up; a period where he felt he made less than stellar life decisions. Matusow appears to have achieved his goal, as people who watched him during the 2005 WSOP and recent Tournament of Champions believe that he is now playing the best poker of his life.

In the poker world, where being unique is common, Mike Matusow holds his own. His aggressive playing style is often accompanied by aggressive table talk, garnering Mike the nickname 'The Mouth'. While his often combative banter can put his opponents on tilt, Matusow sees his verbal activity more as a device to stay mentally engaged in the game. Either way, both poker enthusiasts and television producers rejoice when Mike makes a televised final table, because they know they are in for both great theatre and great poker.
