John Wenzel

John "Johnny Quads" Wenzel is a magazine editor, author and successful high-stakes cash-game player based in South Florida. His most recent accomplishments are taking over as editor of Poker Pro magazine and winning the Oklahoma State Pot-Limit Hold'em Championship.

Playing poker since he was in grade school on Long Island decades ago, Wenzel has won tournaments both online and in the “real” world and has accomplished what everyone strives for but few achieve: showing a profit every year. Besides being a serious player, Johnny was a designer and editor at magazines and tabloids such as Star and The National Enquirer before joining Poker Pro.

Prior to his magazine work, Johnny was a reporter, photographer, designer and editor at newspapers in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Florida, and also dealt poker professionally for a time. He earned a journalism degree from the hotbed of college poker, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with an emphasis on reporting, writing, literature and philosophy.

Although he graduated near the top of his class, his real education began when his parents drove through Las Vegas on a cross-country vacation. Hanging out the window of the family station wagon looking at the bright lights and glitz of Fremont Street, "Johnny Quads" was neither the first nor the last to be hypnotized by the glitter. He began reading and collecting books on Vegas, gambling and poker, and today owns a huge library of first editions and signed copies.

Years later, Johnny got his nickname when incredibly, he was dealt four-of-a-kind on four consecutive Hold'em hands at the Mirage, the last being four fours, during one of his weekend jaunts to Vegas, Atlantic City or California.

Recently, Johnny put some of his own thoughts down on paper, culled from years of high-limit cash-game play. His 300-page book on poker strategy (“Everything Poker Strategy”) was published by Adams Media (Boston) in 2004, followed by “Everything Hold'em" and an introductory work titled "The Only Poker Book You'll Ever Need." They are available at all major bookstores and at JohnnyQuads.com.

In his spare time, Johnny still plays in the biggest home and club games in Florida and throughout the Deep South.
