Linda IwaniakAfter watching poker for many many years I finally took up the challenge at the age of 47 to really learn the game to a point where I felt comfortable enough to play in live tournaments. After six months of playing online and acting as a sponge on as much information as I could gather from books, TV programmes, etc I took the plunge and played some cash games in Las Vegas. Coming home with a profit in the cash game really boosted my confidence to try again and six months later I was back in Las Vegas playing cash and some small tournaments. Again walking away in profit from the cash and being the winner of one of the tournaments confirmed my confidence in my abilities. With my winnings from Las Vegas and from the Internet (winning several tournments online) I decided to enter the inaugural UK Ladies Open Poker Championship that was held at Stanleys' Star City Casino in Birmingham, UK, in September 2006. A good tournament with a deep stack and 40 minute clock. After two days of long hours and intensive play I walked away the winner. £10,300 and a diamond bracelet (worth £5,500). In 2007 I have played a lot in mixed tournaments and have been doing very well. In the APAT (Amateur Poker Player Tour) Welsh Championship on 24/25 February I was very unlucky at the final table and finished in 6th place, not bad for a tournament of 220 people with only 4 ladies in the field. March 22/23 2008 I entered the APAT European Championship (held in Vienna, Austria) and finished 4th of 188 entries from all around Europe.
