Day 1 of WSOP Winter Bayou Poker Challenge Closes

by PokerPages.com
Tue, Dec 9th, 2008 @ 12:00am

The Harrah’s New Orleans Winter Bayou Poker Challenge, a WSOP Satellite Event, kicked off Monday at Harrah's Casino in New Orleans.

This year, 103 players turned out for the event, chipping in $5,000 each to create a prize pool of $499,550. In addition to the $158,290 first prize, the winner will receive a $10,000 seat in the 2009 WSOP Main Event (with $1,000 in travel money), hence the new "Satellite Event" name. Last year, this event was an official WSOP Circuit Event, but this season there will only be one circuit event per casino.

Neither Andy Philachack, who won this event last December, nor Nick Ceci, who won the Circuit Championship here back in May, returned to play, so there was no 'defending champion'. The closest they had was Timothy 'TK' Miles, who finished second to Nick Ceci in May. Unfortunately, TK busted out in level 3 when his pocket aces got cracked by a set.

Chef Paul Prudhomme, who plays all the major events here, also busted out in level three. Only two ladies participated and neither managed to advance to Day 2. Jena Delk, who won the Ladies tournament during the May Circuit, lasted the longest, but busted out during level eight.

Both Binger brothers played and both busted out. Michael hit the rail during level five, while Nick lasted until level six. Michael held the distinction of being the only WSOP Circuit Championship winner to play this event. He won his Circuit Championship ring last month at Harvey's in Lake Tahoe. Only two WSOP bracelet holders participated. Jason Young won his bracelet in the $1,500 No Limit Shootout this past summer. Dan Schmiech won his bracelet in the $5,000 Limit Hold'em event in 2005. Both of them busted out during level seven.

At the end of eight levels of play, only 33 players remained. William 'wilpay' Payne is way out in front with over 270,000 chips. Justin Allen is a distant second with 148,000 and BJ McBrayer is third with 109,000.

Day 2 will get underway at 2 p.m. central time Tuesday. Follow the action live at PokerPages.com. Live coverage from Day 1 can be found here.
