Italy legalizes Online GamingSun, Oct 1st, 2006 @ 12:00am Italy this week has decided to regulate the online gambling industry. So as of January 1, 2007, Italian citizens can legally gamble online. And when they do, the Italian government will collect a 3% tax from gaming companies on gaming revenues that Italian customers generate. The legislation de-regulates all 'ability based and fixed betting activities', which poker clearly falls under. It also clears the way for things like public sports betting and bingo parlors. The Italian plan seems to mirror the way the U.K. regulates online companies doing business with U.K customers. A bigger question for the online gaming industry is: what about the U.S. - will they forego the many millions of tax dollars at stake? The U.S. Senate is not likely to pass the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act in any form, (stand alone or attached to other legislation) before the Senate election recess this weekend.
