Will Change in US Congress Help Online Poker?Fri, Nov 10th, 2006 @ 12:00am Democrats gained control of the United States Senate on Thursday, giving them a majority in both houses of Congress for the first time since 1994. The Democrats picked up the last seat they needed to capture the Senate when the Republican incumbent in Virginia, George Allen, conceded to Jim Webb, his Democratic challenger. The new Senate will now have 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and two independents, Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut and Bernard Sanders of Vermont. Since the 2 independents align themselves with the Democrats, Democrats will have a 51-to-49 advantage in the new Senate. House of Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, will become the first woman to serve as speaker of the House. US voters this past week demonstrated their dissatisfaction: with President Bush, handling of the Iraq war, taxes, and many personally-pushed Republican agendas. The vote signals that a major change on Capitol Hill has occurred. "The election's over," said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, who will become the new Senate majority leader. "It's time for a change." Online poker players echo Reid's sentiments how 'It's time for a change' with hopes that the current prohibition-like legislation will be changed to one of regulation of the online poker and the online gambling industry as a whole. Some look for that change to come from the likes of Rep. John Conyers Jr. of Detroit, who has consistently argued for regulation of the online gambling industry. He is expected to lead the Judiciary Committee. Another supporter of regulation vs. prohibition is Shelley Berkley, Democrat Congresswoman for the State of Nevada. "Internet gaming is becoming more popular every day and we need a comprehensive federal study that looks at the question of whether or not it can be effectively regulated and what role technology can play in accomplishing that goal," said Berkley, who co-chairs the Congressional Gaming Caucus. And most importantly, be sure YOU continue to contact your senator or representative to let them know you support regulation of the online gambling industry, and in particular online poker.
