Lee Nelson Crowned PokerStars ANZPT Melbourne Champion
Veteran poker pro Lee Nelson added another notable score to his decorated resume on Sunday after being crowned the latest PokerStars Australia New Zealand Poker Tour champion in Melbourne.
The Australian Poker Hall of Famer has earned over $2.5 million in the live arena during the last decade but his desire to succeed at the top of the game remains undiminished after besting a 310 runner field at the Crown Casino for a $156,550 jackpot.
Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin, Harry Demetriou and David Steicke were among those who made the trip Down Under for the prestigious event though none of them were able to advance to the final session on Sunday.
Nelson's 'Final Table' nickname epitomizes his ability to run deep in tournaments and he steadily increased his stack early on to leap to the top of the leader board.
Justin Sanchez ($13,020), Brett Chalhoub ($17,670), Stephen Eliesen ($22,320) and Tom Wing ($27,900) all departed before Nelson sent notable live tournament grinder Phil Willcocks ($34,100) to the rail with a rivered straight.
Nelson's domination continued as he eliminated Karan Punjabi ($43,090) and Danny Chevalier ($55,180). Chevalier headed home when his three-bet shove with pocket threes were crushed by Nelson's turned full house.
Nick Georgoulas ($99,200) was the last remaining obstacle between Nelson and the title but it did not take long for the 68 year to win out in heads up play. Nelson landed the knockout blow with a flopped flush as he secured the $156,550 jackpot and the ANZPT triumph.
